Gerry McNamara needs to be the next coach

Dion Waiters (who was at the MAAC tournament by the way - they showed him on camera - my all time favorite player (what a sad story how he imploded in the NBA - championship ring regardless)

MIchael Carter Williams
Tyler Ennis
Michael Gbinje
Malachi Richardson
And Gerry impacted those players in what way?

First of all, settle down.

Second, culture is shaped by management. We’re talking about basketball here. Whether the dude filing TPS reports or the lady coordinating travel plans likes the HC or not is of no consequence. It’s very likely they do not care.
Your run of the mill average employees most certainly impact organizational culture.

UCLA is trending down and that's with a ridiculous NIL budget. I want innovation. Not more of the same.
Well if we want and need a proven can’t miss coach, I like Cronin’s resume a heck of a lot more than these other candidates but reasonable minds may differ.

Wacthed the Siena MAAC tournament and am really happy for GMAC. His team played very well and he coached them well to take the league title and punch thier ticket back to the dance. Kudos!

That said, it's a solid "No" from me for him as the next HC at Syracuse.

Some Reasons:

  • Low Mid Major: MAAC is a low mid-major league and the level of play is a much different from a P4 league. GMAC should work his way up to a gig at a higher mid major (like most successful MAAC coaches) and prove his chops before he makes the next logical move to a major conference

  • KenPom/Metrics: Metrics support that. Siena is fun to watch but reality is they are #190 in KenPom. That is primarily due to the level of competition and schedule, but a low mid major gig is low mid major gig and it's a stepping stone to higher mid major leagues and gigs, as it should be

  • Recruiting: He's put a nice compliment of players together at Siena (Doty is an absolute gamer), but his recruiting prowess here as an assistant was mixed at best. Again, moving to a better league and landing better players needs to be seen/born out and should be a part of the vetting for a P4 HC gig

  • Rebuilding the Program Under NEW Leadership: This is the BIGGIE... Quite simply, it's past the time to break from the JAB coaching tree and modernize the program under new leadership, with fresh ideas, approach, tactics built for the modern D1 basketball game, evolving NIL environment, and ability to recruit, reload, and reset entire rosters annually, and effectiveluy support fundraising efforts to optimize our funding sources and outlays. This is the world we are trying to survive and thrive in and we need a modern approach. We almost never do this but we NEED to now to rebuild, become relevent again, and stay competitive. Change is hard and it will be difficult, but we can and should do it now. Yes, let's rip the band aid off. It's time.

  • Immediate Results & Pressue: After Red's failure, any inhouse hire would be under intense scrutiny and the leash to perform and perform quickly will be SHORT. Would that be fair to GMAC?? Prolly not, but that is what the reality would be. It's may also be why some ITKs have stated he is cool on the job right now...
I genuinely hope this milestone conference championship for GMAC is the first in a number of awards he gets as he builds his HC experience, and I hope his coaching trajectory continues to rise. He could certainly be a good candidate for the future for a return to his Alma Mater.

However, our program needs a full reset and reboot under new leadership and GMAC is not what we need at this time.

That is the reality.

What makes you think GMac wants the SU job right now.
Actually he supposedly let TPTB know a few weeks ago that he wasn't interested in the job.
Whether he thought it too weird to take over from Red, whether he was pissed he was so ignored 3 years ago, or whether he realizes whoever takes this job will be in a super pressure cooker situation.

And from what I understand, they were not remotely interested in him.

That could change but I seriously doubt he will be the hire.
One day for sure, but not this year.

He is beyond beloved at Siena - I would be shocked if he does not stay there another 2 years.
Assuming he keeps Doty, Folefac and the new point guard recruit.

And then move up to a better job in the northeast depending on what is available.

Not in my experience. The tone is set at the top (and middle). The lower level employees are a product of the culture, they don’t shape it. And, again, we’re talking about basketball. The culture that affects what’s on the court is, at most, tangentially related to the Athletic Department staff. Sports teams operate in silos.

Just what we needed…..another thread about GMac. Lol I get what you are trying to say Kingtidge but really another thread?

This hire is going to tear apart the fanbase for a period of time huh. The Monarchists vs the Revolutionaries.

The only thing that brings the fanbase together is winning. It’s been fractured since probably 2019 with cracks showing up a few years before that.

That’s the thing about fans, we’re fanatical. Mix that with the incessant need to be right online and sparks will fly.

He was their position coach. One would think he had a big part in their development.
He’s also was promoted to assistant coach during Dion’s sophomore year. Not sure I’d say GMac was responsible for Dion’s performance in the NBA

Heart = What a great story. GMAC comes in & returns us to glory for 2 more decades.

Head = Hodgson is the correct choice at this particular time.

I can see the arguments from both sides as to who is the more proven commodity and who may be the greater risk but could yield the greatest long-term reward. The recency bias of GMAC also doesn't fail me. What did a previous poster call it, the "March Madness pill"? lol

Also, weren't people just saying a couple weeks ago that Gerry may not event WANT the job?

Everywhere I've been it's been set at the top.
Did I say set? I said impact. Just because the top says something, doesn’t make it so. Lower level employees can impact organizational culture. This is a factual statement. Regardless, this isn’t a discussion about the minutiae of corporate culture and change management.

Teams and companies take on the personality of who's in charge.
