Gerry McNamara needs to be the next coach

Sell me on Hodgson. I don't get it. At all.

Watch USF play, watch tape of his team at Ark state. Listen to the interviews and look back to the teams Oats had with BH at his side. Hes been on an upward trajectory without setbacks for a while both in recruiting and results for a longer period of time.

Then look at the metrics multiple folks have shared in this thread. There is a very solid case behind him as a coach and recruiter. Also he’s been part of multiple teams that he helped build up to meet new heights consistently going from an assistant to now a HC.

You can’t look at all that and not come away with a number of reasons he’s a great option unless you are firmly biased against someone who isn’t from the SU family or someone who has been a P4 head coach for a decade already like a Chris Mack for example. Add onto the fact that pulling in a guy like the Iowa state coach would be very expensive and even someone like Mack has some flaws even with his resume.

Gerry McNamara, good enough to coach ACC peer programs. Not good enough for Syracuse University basketball fans.

Not what people are saying. They're saying that another, minimally qualified player from the past, who is another family hire, is a big gamble, and if it fails we're done.

Here's what RF2044 posted earlier. Just the tip of the iceberg.

Here is a summary from about two weeks ago about how USF rates nationally on a bunch of advanced statistics:
  • Fast pace aggressive system that can compete with some of the best. They overwhelm opponents, and attack the rim at every chance.
  • 20th in tempo 38.4%
  • adj off reb% (9th)
  • 17.7 2CP/g (1st)
  • 28.3 FTA/g (1st)
  • 8.4 steals/g (29th)
  • 18.7 pts off TOV/g (8th)
  • 5th in 2PA distance
Please note that those are national ratings. So, in adjusted offensive rebounding [just picking one from the list above], USF is 9th NATIONALLY, out of the 361 D1 programs. USF is #1 out of 361 men's college basketball in free throws attempted per game, etc.

Also please note that Hodgson is accomplishing this in his first year at that school, with a roster he had to scramble to cobble together last offseason.

Proven winner as a player. People like Gerry. You want people in the seats, Gerry’s going to put them there. You want good players coming to Syracuse, Gerry’s going to bring them here. You have a lovely relationship with Gerry as HC on the bench. Gerry is as much a winner as that coach from USF who no one knows. Hire Gerry if he wants to come.

As much as we like Gerry, Bill, what happens if we open 4-6 or something like that, and are already out of the NCAA Tournament before Thanksgiving?

He only gets one chance to fix everything. He has less leeway than any outside hire.

I don't know why people hate Chris Mack and guys like him as candidates.

How would his failure be any different than an outside coach’s failure? Neither are a sure thing.

If BH is the hire and fails, what? Then it’s okay to revert back to a ‘family’ hire? Why? If that’s not okay, and we go with another outside hire, how is that different than GMac failing and going with an outside hire after him?

He is so obviously the choice lol

Still pimpin' for his Fox Hole Buddy.
Let Gerry go to Georgia Tech, then. BC is a career killer.
He's too big a risk if he fails. We are done as a program, if that happens.
Save the Gerry card for if the next guy is not successful,
He hasn't coached at much more than a Diviision 2 level at Siena.
Yet he and his team will be dancing next week and we wont.
And neither BH or Schertz have ever attended the dance either.
Though that might change this week, time will tell.

Every conference is a conference of peer teams with similar talent. Higher average talent doesn’t make it harder to win. The stat I care about is winning. One guy has been HC for 3 years and the other 2 years. Statistics can be a factor but not the only one.
Would you say that going 9-9 in the acc is the same difficulty as going 9-9 in the maac?

I told u guys bc was going after him. Mr wrong is sometimes right.

Didn’t someone say Gmac turned down SU?
I know there were others who commented but from my standpoint, I don't think I ever questioned that BC would go after GMac. I did question if GMac would take the job

Out on the whole Hurley family. If Dan wins 10 championships and decides Syracuse is the only place for him and he’ll coach for $10 a year… out.

Don’t care what was asked, don’t need to listen to form my opinion. Because even if the question was a sledgehammer “Do you think Gerry will get bigger offers this offseason”? - the correct answer would be “I don’t know, I was never in the business of hiring coach because I was too busy being one. But Gerry’s a great coach, I expect he’ll have continued success and will get bigger opportunities - if not this year then soon”.

I realize there is absolutely no way JB would ever take that approach. But that’s why I would be thrilled if he would just stop giving interviews.
So, you are entitled to form an opinion, but Boeheim isn't?

Proven winner as a player. People like Gerry. You want people in the seats, Gerry’s going to put them there. You want good players coming to Syracuse, Gerry’s going to bring them here. You have a lovely relationship with Gerry as HC on the bench. Gerry is as much a winner as that coach from USF who no one knows. Hire Gerry if he wants to come.

This is an insane post with all due respect lol
You have a right to your opinion,
lol

Yes, but an outsider would get a little more time, in my opinion.
If Gerry had a poor start, the media would kill us.

You recognize there’s a difference between having an opinion and sharing that opinion with the media, right?
Yeah. The difference is Boeheim is a HOF coach who was asked his opinion and nobody knows who you are.
