Gerry Staff Predictions…

He was Wes Johnson before Wes Johnson.

He seems to be making a mark as a coach. Successful at Liverpool leading to a NYS championship as head coach.

I’m very intrigued about AO. I love seeing a big man coach big men, and former forwards coaching forwards.

Having guards coach and develop big men hasn’t worked for the past decade.
Interesting take. How do you get the Wes Johnson comparison though? That guy was an athletic freak, carry a team on his shoulders kind of player.

Can we PLEASE not put together a staff comprised totally of former SU players? Is one from outside too much to ask?
Wonder why we all think something like that would happen.

I loved that he played for ‘Cuse because had he played anywhere else i would have HATED him.. That being said I don’t think he fits into Gerry’s personality category.. Just don’t think it would mix.. I would be all for it though!!

I certainly hope he has changed for his younger days

I wrote about my friend JB many times over the years I have been a poster on this board. Perhaps some haven’t read about recruiting and the time you put in as a HC at a high major university.

The picture is one of total exhaustion and getting sleep when you can where you can. I mentioned that when I had graduated living in CT, a friend of mine and another SU grad would meet Jim and the team about 5 P.M. at Bradley Int’l airport arriving to play at UConn.

The team would board a bus that would take them to the Farmington Marriott and instead of going with the team and get to put his feet up for a couple of hours, Jim would jump into my friends car and we’d drive to either a basketball game(s) where he knew a recruit would be playing or a recruits house to meet the recruits and his parents.

We’d have a good time talking on the way about who he was going to see, his feelings about the UConn game and general conversation about the team, how he was and his thoughts about the season.

Then we’d hit the games and homes for the next 4 hours seeing at least 5 recruits. Jim would take minimal notes; most of the evenings information about recruits he’d store in his mind. Then we’d race to his favorite restaurant a French/Italian very excellent one called L’Auberge de Paris where he would order his favorite - Chicken Parm with sauce and sides. By the time we reached the Marriott it was midnight.

My point here is that Jim did a lot of recruiting on his own putting in long days even when the team had an away game. We did many recruiting trips with him over the years. From 1977 through 1986, he’d climb into the car at the airport, and we’d go to basketball recruiting games, recruits homes and restaurants. It was a great time. Heart and persistence, Jim had both big time.

Desperately need someone that can come in (like Luke Murray at UConn) and build an offense. I don't care if they went to SU or not

I’m reasonably confident basketball doesn’t tend to work this way. There aren’t really coordinators, like in football, who come in a run their stuff.

I mean, that's exactly what Luke Murray did at UConn, which is why I referenced him in the post.

What does this have to do with Gerry's staff in 2026?

Jim was insanely lazy and had no persistence at the end of his career.

Lee is not from SU. Last job before Siena was Washington as director of recruiting and assistant coach. I think he went to Union college.
I would be happy with him here, if he doesn't get the Siena job.

As I stated in a follow up post, he was a 6-7 forward that spent a year at a midwestern school (Illinois for Blackwell, Iowa St for Wes), then transferred to Syracuse. Wes was the better overall player, definitely more athletic. But Blackwell was a solid player, 3 year starter that averaged double figure points.
