Hartman is back

Weird that mental health is being thrown about here. WF forum mentions he's at practices, with his left arm in a cast. They also state that Jamie Newman is applying for reinstatement to WF, but Uga may try to block it.

Seems an odd, albeit not entirely unique, situation. Hope it's not the case but mental health issues for sure can manifest as physical ailments. Truly hope this young man is alright and arm in a sling/cast is not result of self harm in any of the 4 specific scenarios that I'm thinking but do not wish to speak over him.

from the less important football standpoint, this is why it can be hard to assess a schedule going into the season. Whomever doesn't face Hartman(assuming he is out for a long period of time, that is) all of a sudden has a much, much more winnable game than what was thought originally. Again, don't want to trivialize his condition by talking about football schedules, but figured it could be stated on a football forum, hopefully tastefully.

You're a better man than a lot of the WF forum posters. Wild speculation on nature of injury/illness being flung around in the thread.
Don't think it's out of line to mention - Blood clot in arm - as a possible reason.

My guess is he'll be back by the Syracuse game and will be throwing 500 yards on us as usual.

Hope he's better no matter what but I'm assuming the problem will be fixed by Syracuse

Went to Wake's board. Clausen prep the team so there wouldnt be any leaks. It was non football related. Clausen is adamant about that. He said Sam's mental health is fine and he is expected to come back this season. Fans are just throwing different things out there. Some said it could have been a weight room/training, hernia type injury etc. None of them know anything. Just speculation.

Hope he heals fully. He's a fun player to watch, except when he's playing SU.

The mention of an arm sling and a hernia reminds me of one time in band camp when I was lifting with my roommate. Just a couple of pflugelhorn players repping out on bench with 3 donuts on each side (that's 315 for the runners out there). My buddy was tiring a little around rep 8 when all of a sudden - rip, pop, his colon popped through his left triceps - i kid you not. The dreaded triceps hernia that most people only read about. He missed the whole fall music festival with his arm in a sling.

Waiting on Cunningham to miss first game because of illegal benefits…

Thamel:

Sources: Wake Forest starting QB Sam Hartman has been medically cleared to return to competition by the school’s medical experts. He’s expected to start on Saturday at Vanderbilt. He was sidelined Aug 10 with a non-football related medical condition.

Gotta put aside what makes it easier for us to get wins in this situation.

Hartman might very well be the best QB I have seen in the ACC since Syracuse has joined the conference. He is a hell of a player and I am glad he will have a chance to finish his career on the playing field.

Even if it is his seventh season. It seems like this is his seventh season to me anyway...

Former SU LB coach Clark Lea must be thrilled with this news.

Sam Hartman medically cleared and expect to play Saturday. Great news for the young man!

From ESPN: “Hartman, a three-year starter, was sidelined last month with what the school termed a "non-football injury." Tuesday, Wake Forest acknowledged Hartman was diagnosed with Paget-Schroetter syndrome -- also known as effort thrombosis -- a blood clot often associated with repeated strenuous activity.

Hartman underwent surgery on Aug. 9 to have the clot removed, and a follow-up ultrasound Friday confirmed he had no signs of additional clotting.”

Wow that seems like very serious stuff. Glad he is on the way back.

This is a little of a tough one.

Paget-Schroetter is seen sometimes in swimmers. It’s from repetitive upper body motion. Like throwing a football over and over again. They can put a stent in or remove a piece of rib to keep the vein from being compressed by the motion. But if you don’t fix the underlying problem (ie repetitive motion) or stay on blood thinners (not ideal when playing football) there’s a good chance it will recur.

Blood clots are scary. I'm not sure I would keep playing.

clots are scary, I had one in my finger about 4 years ago. the finger was huge and turned black and that's when I finally went to a doctor (I'm a guy, we are stupid). it was just a pinky, but it was seriously the most painful thing I have ever had to deal with, and it took a couple of months for the blood thinner to get rid of it. really glad to hear Sam is coming back, he will probably put 5 TDs up against Vandy.

They do mention something about an infection. So it’s possible he had an indwelling catheter to treat a bloodstream infection then developed a clot at the catheter site which happens and doesn’t need a long course of blood thinners. But still…

If will just be sweeter when we go down their and win.

“Sam developed a blood clot in the subclavian vein. This condition is known as Paget-Schroetter syndrome, or effort thrombosis,” Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist CEO Dr. Julie A. Freischlag, who was Hartman’s surgeon, said in a statement. “We suspect this occurred as a result of a previous infection that eventually caused inflammation. After our diagnosis on August 9, we first did a procedure to remove the blood clot. Secondly, we performed surgery to eliminate the pressure on the vein and then dilated the vein.

“On Friday, we did another follow-up ultrasound on Sam and everything looked great. The clot was gone, the blood flow was good and he felt great. Blood thinner therapies were discontinued once they became medically unnecessary and he is medically cleared to return to full competition.”

I'd like to win because we beat fully healthy teams. (Of course, I wish we were a full healthy team, too.)
