Help Me Here

I love where the program is headed, and I think Dino is stocking the team with talent. At the end of the day, regardless of style, you have to fight for those inches...

It's the mentality. Kill clock, but save your best chance for later. Make choices that benefit your defense, but limit your opportunities to put points on the board. When in doubt, punt. Embrace rock fights.

That's meathead.
Or, another way of looking at it is limit the number of possessions and the importance of depth, because fewer possessions means random chance plays a bigger role in the game (thereby favoring the team w/ a talent disadvantage), and since the difference in talent of starters is usually less that the difference in talent of backups, limiting the importance of depth also favors the team at a talent disadvantage.

Some would call it “meatheaded” other would call it “understanding math and maximizing chances to win.”

The truth is that very few systems are inherently bad in the abstract. They’re only bad in the context of certain situations, and wildly labeling systems as “meatheaded” and “dumb” irrespective of context is intellectually shallow.

I enjoy winning. You guys are so caught up in football aesthetics. BC has outpaced us with talent no matter how they are deploying it. The most beautiful thing to me is when a team can out run another team just because the o-line is dominating the other team off the ball.

BC is gonna win some games this year b/c they have top shelf talent. We have little to no top flight/NFL talent right now. BC now has the facilities to compete with us as well which is dangerous b/c they always were very low in that department.

Watch out for these guys.
They have upside. But I think that we do, too. We’ve just been living through insane mismanagement. Whether or not Barbers works out (and I both hope and think that he will), there’s now enough money behind the program to attract enough interest to avoid some of the obvious mistakes that we’ve made in the past.

The "understanding math and maximizing chances to win" thing pretty much falls apart for equipo meathead unidad when you punt from the opponent's 40.

BC is built with the idea that any QB will do - it limits the variance season to season. Our system demands quality at that spot. Our season has tanked before win #5 two seasons in a row due to our QB going down. He stays healthy we have two bowl seasons to go along with the all-time upset of Clemson and a very nice win vs VaTech.

People falling in love with a Corolla that will never win the race because their Jag keeps breaking down

They have the best running back in the conference and a good enough line that he may very well run for 2000 yards with there style of play . They counter that by having one of the best tight ends in the country and one of the best young receivers as well . If there qb delivers they are going to be a load for people to handle offensively.

Their O wasn’t very good last year, mostly due to QB play. It’s their D that carried them.

You 100% nailed meathead. Limit the other teams chances at scoring by favoring your D and slowing play. You’re right that there’s nothing inherently bad about a defensive mindset. But you’ve then got to be perfect on O and maximize your chances. Less drives, less points, less chances to win.

So many old school NE guys love Addazzio and his style of play around here. It’s in the water. I’m just glad we’re not trying to out BC, BC.

I don't think I've ever seen meathead used this many times in a thread in my life...

We're just a bunch of Archie Bunkers around here.

Problem is they seem to find a good/great qb every 10 years or so and then their monstrous O-Line propels them to that 10 win level. Flutie/Glenn Foley/Matty Ryan/Hasselbeck.

I am not propping up BC to knock down Syracuse. I think both programs are on the way up. I just think we are delusional if we think BC isn't a factor going forward.

Not one of those QB's is an Addazzio guy. I think they'll be a factor going fwd - but that their ceiling is low due to the style they play and lack of QB play to this point. The fascination with them is because they play a form of football that has deep roots in this part of the country. I get that - just need to see them actually win 10 under Addazzio before I'm a believer.

If Syracuse and Boston College have equal talent Babers will beat Addazio every time.
That is the difference between BC and SU.
Syracuse hasn’t had more talent than any P5 team they have played since probably 2005 UConn.

Our biggest problem has been talent. Dino is building a roster of 3 stars and depth while sprinkling in some 4 stars.
BC always gets a couple of those 4 stars and because of its location does okay in recruiting.

Give Dino equal talent I think the guy is amazing. Addazio on the other hand is a meathead who will do it his way.

We have zero evidence yet of that. Dino is a shiny toy with zero results so far. You are talking in absolutes that honestly i hope come true. If Dino goes 4-8 again this year and BC meatheads their way to 8-4 are you still gonna believe this? At some point the coach has to coach up the talent. Addazio has basically taken 7-6 talent and gotten them to 7-6. If he gets himself 8 or 9 win talent he will win 8 or 9 games based on prior results.

I need to see Dino do this in 2018. This is a big year for our program. We have become an excuse machine. Need to see the results in action this year. I think Dino is gonna make me a bigtime believer but i gotta see it this year in the result of a bowl.

Yeah because when Dino had Jimmy G at Eastern Illinois and talent at Bowling Green he didn’t win.
Dino won conference titles.
Addaizo was 13-11 at Temple after Golden rebuilt it.

Dino can win with talent and isn’t a meathead.

Ok.

Choices that benefit defense: Play the field position game. Try to win TOP with a heavy run game.

When in doubt, punt:. Field position game. Not trusting offense to get a first down, and not willing to give up yards, if they don't.

Embrace rock fights: Hard nosed football , instead of finesse.

Kill clock, Save your best chance for later: Either taking a knee with 1:30 in the half, or not going for it on 4th and x. Poor 2 minute offense. Every run team kills clock.

What I'm getting is run heavy(I assume you mean power run) teams that play the field position game. Like Alabama and Georgia.

If you prefer a high powered, uptempo offense, that takes chances? Cool. High power takes talent. It almost always involves more passing. Did you know that BC ran 87 plays a game(same as our average), for their fist 4 games? (17.7 points in those games). 65% of colleges run more, than pass, because it gives them a better chance, based on their talent level. That almost always involves the field position game.

Most NFL coaches go for it, 4th and 2, at the 40. Most don't when it's 4th and 3.

The mentality is rooted in the run game.(and base football principles) When they have the talent, and do it well, we call them the National Champions. When they have less talent, and don't do it as well, we call them Meatheads.
