Home workouts. What are you doing?

My gym opened a couple of weeks ago. It's awesome to have access to modern equipment and air conditioning (I was working out in the garage of our vacation rental house). Workouts are a lot more fun now.

organizing a group workout in my neighborhood this weekend. going to do this one to provide some meaning. All participants will donate to a charity of their choice provided it benefits a group working towards racial equality.

today I did a fun walk/run for any of you non runners who want to mix it in. Fartlek is Swedish for speed play.

15 second run 45 second walk times 5
30 second run 30 second walk time 5
45 second run 15 second walk times 5

repeat that 3 times. We covered 4.8 miles in 45 minutes. So a good mix for those who struggle with distance for whatever reason. Add in the 100% humidity this morning and it was a sweaty one.
The "I can't breathe workout". Is that done with no rest in-between intervals?

I’ll be doing the Murph a week from Monday as I do every Memorial Day. Will be curious how it goes, I typically do a ton of pull-ups, but haven’t done one in 90 days. Pushups should be fine, I do well over 700 air squats per week. Running is always the key. I’m down 25 lbs in the last 3 months so I’m hoping that gives me some advantage on the pull-ups given that it will be lower than I am used to weight wise even with the vest.
BTW, been meaning to ask a question.

Why do people do workouts for time? To me, it just encourages bad form. What am I missing?

I am also not objective on this. Did the 300 workout for awhile and gave myself a nasty case of golfer's elbow that lingers to this day from doing the kettlebell lifts with too much weight and bad form.

Metabolic conditioning

Metabolic conditioning
You can do matabolic conditioning just by doing your workout with minimal rest and proper form.
In fact, I would argue that that is harder than racing through your workout as quickly as possible.

I think assuming people are sacrificing time for form is a bit misguided. Sure some will to cut corners, but when I do anything for time my goal is to do it with consistent form. I also believe that doing things against a clock provides an opportunity to create some additional drive, create benchmarks, and really allows you to push past some mental barriers. Some of my best workouts are for time. It’s not all I do by any stretch, I do many structured plans as well whether lifting, or cardio.

I’m a guy who played sports from 5 years old through college. For me it reminds me the most of competing. I can measure against myself, my friends and even strangers should I desire

Yeah, I get it...that is what I use my interval training for.

I have to be really strict with my form because that is the only way my omnipresent tendonitis doesn't flair up...makes for really slow sets...

Trail running. I left my running shoes for the streets that have my footbeds and inserts in Florida. The hotel is all ready to ship them back I sent them a label but they keep pestering me for my Fed Ex account and I can't sign up for one with a debit card. I'm praying they just mail them. Stop torturing me for the fed ex account number! 2 hour trail runs w/no support have killed my achilles I don't even think a week on the shelf will make them right to do another 14 miles.

Trail runs are soooo much better on joints than pavement.

Gonna try and get my bike tuned today. I want to take the train up to Gloucester or Essex with my bike and cycle home. They quoted me a month out back in April and I was dumb to not do it since I went away for 25 days.

I just don't feel like any strength (sit ups pushups) stuff until gyms are open. Hitting the golf ball as far as ever and weigh less than ever.

In Ohio gyms have been open for about 2 weeks I think. I went for first time last Thursday, then again Fri and yesterday and tonight. Wore mask last Thursday but yeah... it's pretty much not possible to wear a face covering and work out. Gym closes at 8 so I've been going around 7 when there are less people. Wipe down everything before using, and after. Watching others, most people are doing the same thing. Use hand sanitizer often and then wash hands before leaving. I don't have cell phone out at all during the workout and shower right when I get home. Stay there like 45min max.

Definitely just taking the precautions, but nice getting back in there. Lifting weights, not even necessarily to make #gains, to just reduce stress and get moving is a big part of my life. Did some back yesterday and man I can feel the soreness.

Debated making a new thread but it will probably get lose somewhere.

Any bikers out there? Not talking street biking, more of the hybrid types. I am trying to get myself a bike (been years) and wondering if any people have recommendations for brands. Like I said, I don't want a road bike and I don't need anything serious (like mountain bikes), so a hybrid for primarily street/light trail riding is best.

Where do you live? If you're near a lot of trails you may want to get a mountain bike. You can always change the tires for street riding. I used to ride in the old Split Rock quary and trails near there and it was a blast. Part of the fun was finding new trails. If you ride in an area with rocks and mud or uneven surfaces, the fat tires on a mountain bike will make it a lot more enjoyable. Get a good quality bike and it will last. If trails near you are flat and smooth like the Erie Canal paths a hybrid is fine. I haven't bought a bike in years so I'm not going to be able to recommend any particular brands.

I live right Around cuyahoga valley national park so tons of trails around

I’m looking at gravel/cyclocross bikes right now myself. I have 3 bikes already, including a decent mountain bike and a single speed city bike. Gravel will give you what you are looking for, while staying much lighter than a full suspension mtb. How much are you looking to spend?

I’m fine going up to $1,000

You should check out a few bike stores near you and talk to people who ride in your area. Get a couple of options and try a couple of brands. Frame geometry has a lot to do with comfort. Get good components for smooth and consistent shifting. I'm still riding my Yakota Yosemite that I bought in the late 80's because I like the way it fits.

You’ll have a hard time finding a mountain bike in that range from a decent shop. Just plain sold out, because there is little else to do. Take a look at Craigslist. That’s where I got my mountain bike.

You should be able to get a decent hybrid for that much though. Just don’t buy from the big box stores. You have no idea who is assembling the bikes for them.

I wasn't familiar with gravel bikes. I like the idea and they seem like a well rounded option. Living in Florida I only change gears when I'm at a traffic light. If I had a more varied terrain area, I think I'd choose a gravel bike. When I lived in Syracuse, the only street riding I did for my last few years living there was to ride to a trail.

Yeah, we actually have more dirt roads in VT than asphalt. Plus a good friend of ours got killed road riding a few years ago, so it makes road riding really scary for me quite honestly. I love mountain biking more than any of the others, but I try to be respectful of trails when the conditions aren't great, like they will be tomorrow after it rains heavy today. You can just up and go with a gravel bike, or so they tell me. I have slightly wider tires on my single-speed city bike, but doing hills around here is no fun with no gears. That's my drinking downtown bike.

I'm stuck with the roads here that are full of old people, young kids on cell phones and tourist. What could go wrong?
A drinking bike is a very good choice and they can be very versatile after multiple drinks.

When I move to Florida, a beach cruiser will likely be my drinking bike of choice.
