Hooville Postgame thoughts...

Copeland had a nice stat line, but when the game was close he tripped over his own feet two
possesions in a row. His hands are awful. Brown is the only player that actually played a decent game.

Yeah, a few awful turnovers.

We got dominated by Colgate for 15 minutes.

You wouldn’t take Jesse and Joe back because they were on the team last year and had a bad record?

Benny, Taylor, Mintz and Bell were on the team too, and I’d probably take Jesse and Joe over all but one of them.

Nothing you can say will convince me that we’re worse with them, we’d be FAR better than we are no and it wouldn’t be close.
If nothing I can say would convince you (such as showing the hideous defensive analytics of said players), why would I bother engaging a debate on this?

Copeland and Brown are the only players with consistent heart that aren’t blackholes.

Awful showing and absolutely pathetic effort. Would love a different staff. Fine with giving Red a chance.

The broadcast mentioned Westry could be ready to go in a few weeks. What is everyone's thoughts on his role and who's he taking minutes from if he is ready to go? Taylor Bell Starling.
Few weeks means he starts practicing in January. Just keep the redshirt year at this point.

Who’s gonna sit for him Bell, Benny, Taylor the guys who can hit outside shots?

Copeland is still a liability. Kid plays really hard but he is a turnover machine. His turnovers in the first half is what derailed us when we were actually playing well.

Have you looked at JJs defensive analytics and compared them to Joe’s? They’re very close, and I’ll take Joe’s random great games rather than JJs one decent game every 5.

It should’ve happened by now, but Red needs to crack the whip, instill some discipline, and humble these guys. Bobby Knight their asses. None of them are as good as they think.

Judah’s defense was atrocious today. Going for steals and terrible switching killed us repeatedly.

His cardio is going to be a mess, he hasn’t played regularly in a long time.

JJ Starling is Louis McCrosky but worse on the defensive end.

Benny doesn’t belong on the court.

Copeland would be excellent playing at the Rucker but not in organized basketball.

McLeod is the same guy who barely played for a 9 win team last year.

If the players are going to be blamed for not executing Red’s plan then Red needs to sit them immediately, if these guys are executing his plan then he needs to change things up immediately. He needs to realize that his job is going to ultimately depend on this group of sophomores, after last season and through this one thus far I wouldn’t bet on them.

If they don’t perform this season they move on and we get different kids

What derailed us in the first half is Judah having, what? 2 points?

Copeland’s an effort guy. Better than being a bystander, selfish or a pouter

Ya very true

Well… JJ scored a bit. 2 assists, though. Should have been 3, at least.
Brown and McLeod were efficient percentage wise. 2 boards by the 7’4” guy, though—seems difficult to do.

He keeps doing that thing where a shot goes up by a player he’s not defending, and McLeod sees the shot go up, but instead of tracking it, he turns away from both the ball and the rim and puts his focus on the guy he was defending. Who is nowhere near the rim and isn’t even moving toward it. Like he has been programmed to make sure his man doesn’t get the rebound. Which is not the same as getting a rebound yourself. 9/10 times, that guy isn’t even trying to get the board because he’s already too far away from the ball. McLeod just takes himself out of rebounding potential. Shocking that the coaches still haven’t addressed that. Which is dumb. If they do know about it and that’s the plan, it’s dumb to infinity.

Taylor doesn’t get open. And can’t shoot when he’s covered. VA’s plan was to stop Mintz and they did that brilliantly. Benny has no clue. Doesn’t even matter if he plays hard. He just doesn’t know how to play. And no one seems to be teaching him.

As others have said, I’d also like to see Mcleod and Brown playing together, since Benny is flaming out. The issue, though, is that someone from the Hima/Patterson contingent has to be able to spell McLeod because Brown won’t be able to as usual.

We still can’t set/make effective use of a pick.

On D, our switches too often leave us confused and exposed. It’s like they switch too quickly/early, because it’s the path of least resistance. VA had so much more lingering tenacity and discipline. We switch when it gets 2% too difficult.

Mintz is gone and I’d expect Benny to be as well regardless. At some point you need SOME continuity. I’m not saying 8-10 guys, but we need some of these guy to improve because starting completely from square one is difficult.

Judah was never going to score a lot today. Copeland’s turnovers still killed us when the game was one possession. I’m not disagreeing with you on the effort but the two aren’t mutually exclusive.

Hes struggling to reliably catch passes. Contributes very little if we aren’t in a full court press. He’s regressed it sucks.

Sure he seems to have a better attitude than most of the team but that doesn’t help us win games. Cuffe was poor today when he came in finally so I’m not sure we have a solution. Maybe Taylor at the 2 and let Benny and Bell be on the floor together?

JJ, Chance, Brown. Sorta reminds me of Gaits first year when we see a different coach with what was here.

We don't have enough talent and Red should have turned the roster over completely. We have a bunch of role-players logging tons of minutes.

Players on the roster that could start for ACC teams:
-Mintz
-JJ (maybe blah he is close to being dropped down)
-Westry (I put him here without seeing him)

Players on the roster that can be rotational players for ACC teams:
-Cuffe
-Brown
-Bell
-Taylor
-McLeod
-Benny

Players that shouldn't be on ACC roster:
-Carey
-Copeland
-Hima

Not going to name names because it’s a bit harsh .., but the list of crap is daunting

We had a guy who, when it was close early , took a horrible shot , missed badly , whined and complained to the ref he was fouled , instead of getting back on D, then tripped on his ass as his guy scored wide open transition layup . What political capital have YOU accumulated to allow you to think you can pull that even once ? Terrible

We have another guy who is about as quick as a Californian regulation commission , takes 10 years to get his shot off , and that shot looks about as smooth as Rocky Dennis’s face

Yet another couple guys who just fall down all the time like they are playing on ice against prime Zernich Chara and several who can’t actually catch a pass.

Other than that I see great things

Very true on McLeod. On a 3 attempt today, I literally watched him rotate downcourt, run behind his man, i.e . further away from the ball, and behind the basket. The ball bounced to where he should have been had he just tracked the ball and crashed the rim.
