Hopkins to handle post-game presser today

A little leadership would have been nice. What Boeheim should have done was come out...make the statement himself about why his comments must be limited...praise the team (ESPECIALLY RAKEEM CHRISTMAS) and then turn it over to Mike Hopkins. Is he incapable of saying just what he needs to say without popping off before leaving? He should speak the words...not a piece of paper. Rak deserves better. SU deserves better. Fans deserve better. Sad.

Ever think that maybe he was told he wasn't doing the presser? I bet SU made the call.

I said he handled it admirably...so I don't suspect you truly disagree 100%? ;) By robotically, I simply meant he didnt say anything you wouldnt expect. I truly believe half the people on here could have at least typed those responses, if not delivered them verbally(which is a bit harder). Hop was fine, but if you think he did anything above and beyond, your drinking has caught up to me today and went beyond bro! We can love the guy and not go overboard. I am appreciative for what he did, but the reporters seemed more out of place than him. He was looking around almost hiding a smirk for 30 seconds waiting for someone to come up with a single question! If anything, I think that would help his confidence. No knock, just calling my observation.
No, I got the good part too. I just didn't agree with the robotic part.

This is what drives me nuts about Axe going on and on about this. Everyone keeps saying to him on Twitter, "You realize he was probably told not to appear at the presser" and all Axe keeps saying is, "I get that, but he still should have showed up." Um, how is he going to show up if he's following orders NOT to show up!?

People are creating drama where there really isn't drama with this one.

I agree with your assertion. I think it's also kinda sad that on one hand the University puts it's full faith and credit in a guy and on the other hand can't trust him to conduct himself properly.

This makes sense. It is simply damage control because knowing Boeheim's epic pressers of the past, this afternoon's could've topped them all had he been able to speak.

I had my popcorn ready to go, but this was the right decision. :noidea:

For many years, he has shot from the hip. Today would have been a bad occasion for that.

When he faces the press (or a single interviewer, more likely), he will come prepared with his bullet points, and will try to stick with them. Facing the press today, after a loss, and maybe even after a win, was asking for more negative headlines.

I agree it was the school's call. The next question though is that decision almost presumes they felt there was a reasonable chance he would go off and say something not helpful.

Without reading any of this string, want to say I loved Hopkins doing the post game presser. He certainly had head coach presence. If he can coach as well as he talked SU"S future with him (when ever it begins!) is bright. My wife loved how he responded when some tried to get him to answer questions on the report even when he said he wouldn't answer. She said they just keep on asking.

"If he can coach as well as he talked"

talking and coaching. please don't mix them up ever.

I can't wait for JB's one month suspension to begin.

Axe: "I get that, but he still should show up".

Talked about Rak being a special kid. SU not being used to losing 13 games. Some players were forced into roles that were too advanced for them. But they worked hard all year, played hard, made improvement. Said you don't win games if shooting 31%. In the summer guys will work on their shooting and their weaknesses and get better. He was very in control, Nice manner with the media. Asked, how am I doing? Said several times JB is a legend and he would work to protect the legacy of what he built. He was very good, especially given it was his first time in that role.
Play a limited bench and zone only? (Sorry couldn't resist) He seemed very in control. Can't wait to see what happens during that 1st 9 ACC games. How much leeway will he have. Is m2m even playable without a lot of practice?

Individuals like Axe are the reason I now feel most "journalists" are a pathetic form of life unworthy of either pity or contempt. The continuum goes productive humans>>>lawyers>>>politicians>>>dogs>>>journalists.

I realize posting that on a board with Newhouse grads might not be popular - but it's a well earned placement based on the pathetic performance of journalists in my lifetime.

Dogs are at least a couple spots too low.

Hop did a nice job. Stifled a few tears in reaction to Rak, which I thought was OK, and stifled a few, I dunno, burps or something. I'm sure a media adviser would tell him not to scarf down a quick hot dog prior to leaving the locker room for the presser.

He did do a nice job. You could feel the air leave the room when it became clear he was going to answer questions and that JB wasn't going to come out from the door way, ready to verbally eviscerate the establishment and the media Chuck D style. Hop is no Flava Flav, he came off more like Chuck's Media Assassin, Harry Allen.

Seriously, nice job by Hop, and smart move by JB/SU. JB being out there would've been bedlam.
Came off looking confident, knowledgeable, and professional (but not flashy) to me. Nice conservative debut...

And kept the media from trying to create something sensational. Hopkins did a nice job and kept the focus on the players and the game.

And he seemed...responsive. Boeheim gets some credit for his sense of humor (when he chooses to deploy it), but it seems like he's laughing at the press. Hopkins seemed more engaged with the people in the room; when he brought some levity, he was laughing with everyone else.

This pic was with a PS article. Any idea of who JB was poking his finger at, and vice-versa?

Watching Mike's presser I couldn't help think how tired he looks. The toll this has to be making on the coaches, staff and their families, has to be horrible.

The absence of JB was probably less "we can't trust this loose cannon" and more "we don't discuss ongoing litigation." Remember, he will likely be in direct personal appeal and/or legal action over this.
