Houston Postgame

I don't believe in morale victories. With that being said, the result today in a loss shows me we have a good team that should easily make the tournament. I do not understand the complaining. We just played an OT game on a neutral site against the number 3 team in the country and we easily could have won.

It felt awesome being in a close game against a top team again. I think we win Tuesday and Weds, and then we get a packed dome for Tennessee.

This was a fantastic effort. We have a squad ladies and gents.
Just feels like we squandered a big opportunity.

I don’t know what to think in all honesty. Love the defensive intensity. Kyle is such a force. Offense looked good at times, bad at times. But can we really expect FT shooting to improve significantly? If we play Kansas like we played Houston, maybe with a little better FT shooting, we win. But did this Houston game take it out of our legs for tomorrow?

Sampson gave Red time to draw up a play and he came up with a pull up half court shot. Elite coach we have on our hands, by the time it’s all said and done we’ll have to rename the court.
Red coached a great game, coached without a doubt his best game as a head coach.
If the kids shoot 60% ONLY SIXTY PERCENT from the line we win.
I'm not what can be done to improve our FT but other than that we outplayed one of the best teams in the country. A team that has the talent to win it all and we did so without Donnie.

Lots of thoughts will post some stuff later good and bad on this game. There are no moral victories when it comes to the bubble and making the tournament. Kids played hard and I appreciate that. Regardless of the schedule I am now sold we have the talent to make the tournament.

We could have scored at the end of the game and some here would be saying, yeah, we would have won by more if Red wasan't coaching. The answer is, his team never quit. Could have. Down 11 hey we gave it a great effort but without Freeman, what can you do? But they didn't.

Sure, we could have won. We also could have given up down 11 with 3 minutes left. The last few years that lead gets to 20. Houston is not losing many games this season. We are a good team. In the grand scheme of things we need to win a few of these games and we are set up to make the tournament.

George decided that what he was doing. You can tell Red wanted to attack the rim. Players make decisions they think are good at that moment. Did Samson forget how to coach when he let SU score the last 11 points in regulation.

There are moral victories .. this isn’t the NFL. Can’t tell me these kids didn’t gain confidence after tonight. Also a 4pt OT loss on a neutral court vs a top 5 is much friendlier on the metrics than a blowout.

Expectations are raised for tomorrow tho…. I feel like it’s a winnable game and based on our remaining OOC schedule …. Almost a
must win

I know that we have no right to be disappointed. If you had told any of us we’d lose by 4 to Houston without Donnie, we’d be shocked and take it.
-But it hurts because the game was there to be won. George had to get into the last play of regulation 4 seconds earlier. But hard to be upset with George. Against that tenacious defense, playing with guys he’s not used to yet, without our best scorer, he played a really nice game. And took care of the ball in a way we haven’t seen a point guard do in a while, although a couple of his turnovers were avoidable. But he is a guy who you can win with.
-in a game full of garbage calls the worst one was when George was called when the Houston player clearly traveled late in the game.
-We have something with Kyle. He played his ass off and showed a ton of heart, not to mention some clutch dunks.
-Betsey apparently has the clutch gene, which is nice to know.
-it goes without saying that the free throws killed us. It was contagious. If we shoot 70% we win the game. Anthony really needs to figure it out because he will get to the line. He also gave up a couple of easy ones on defense. But I like the poise he shows as a freshman.
-speaking of free throw problems, JJ is really scary right now. And it won’t be remembered, but his one on 5 chuck late in the game was absurd.
-it felt good to be fired up again. When Kingz made that and one it felt like the old days. The Betsey three was so exciting. It’s not like last year where our guys are unathletic and out of shape. Our guys gave it everything and if we play defense with that effort and intensity the rest of the season, we will be in every game.

Teams couldn’t shoot FTs under Boeheim either. I’m hard pressed to believe we’re just getting unlucky and recruiting kids who can’t shoot FTs. I have to believe we’re simply neglecting that aspect of the game in practice and not simulating the sequence of in game FTs enough.

Someone explain to me how this tournament works ?
Go out to Vegas. Get paid a bunch of money to play top tier teams. They decide who should play the championship game based on a series of rules nobody cares about.

Basically, it’s a made for TV event. We’re playing top teams and getting paid. That’s all that matters.

One of the reason the offense struggled at times is because Houston is really good at defense. I saw many positives, even the coaching seemed better.

I’d be absolutely SHOCKED If Red drew up a play and George took 1 step past half court and launched.

There are definitely moral victories for a program in our position. People don’t want to face reality and still have the mindset it’s 2003 or 1987. We haven’t been that in a long time but this was a small step back towards that

So they pick our third opponent out of their ass ?

That is what I mean by moral victories; it doesn't mean anything if we don't play the same versus Kansas and win that game. The way we played I expect us to beat Kansas now not just hang in with a chance to win I expect to win the game. If we don't, then this game means nothing.
