I would never presume to comment on Coach Boeheim's coaching, but, realistically, last year was the rebuilding year at Virginia. Not this year. After the 2021 season, there was a massive exodus from UVa. Graduations and premature attrition, coupled with the fact that the covid years had really disrupted Coach Bennett's recruiting routines, left Virginia with a roster of just ten scholarship players. Once the season began, the rotation was limited to seven. Furthermore, only two, Kihei Clark and Reece Beekman, had any real playing experience in Coach Bennett's schemes. And that inexperience showed in early season losses to Navy, JMU, and Clemson. The fact that the team improved throughout the season and finished 21-14 (winning in Durham and sweeping Miami) might suggest that it was Coach Bennett's best coaching job of his career. This year, the top six players return, and an outstanding recruiting class is providing playable depth. Continuity has returned to the program, and that is probably the single most significant element in Virginia's improvement this year. And, if there is a major difference between Virginia and Syracuse this year, I think continuity would define it.
