How much pull does Babers have RE: S&C

I wonder if the word is out he may be canned, seems odd they are lobbying this hard for him out of nowhere. I hope Dino does whatever he thinks is best for the program and the current players and the schemes he wants to run, not for the alumni who have mostly been hot and cold Remember these guys are going to be asked to go at a pace they never have gone before, the lineman will need to be in fantastic shape from a fitness level not just strength. It's a complete change over
Correct

As to the hot and cold, a lot of guys have been completely silent or absent in involvement and support of their former program, whether on the recruiting trail, financially, or recommendations.

Now, a lot of that is self inflicted by the program and how the former ADs and coaches have treated alums.

I think there should be a yearly summit / reunion with open invite to all former players and hold it around summer camp time where everyone can get together and celebrate and air grievances and concerns.

But clearly word must be leaking that Hicks may be on the outs for this type of response by alums.

You all know my stance on Hicks just based on what I see in the lifts.

I would also add is if we're not happy with how things have gone for the last 15 years or so, why are we focusing just on the head coach, and to a lesser extent, the assistant coaches. We should be focused on everything. It all works in one cohesive unit. We've replaced the AD, we've replaced the HC and now the assistants will be replaced. So, when looking at the last piece of the puzzle - strength and condition - we're just going to say "oh, Hicks is loved by the alumni, we must keep him!"? Well, current players and alumni loved Shafer, as well.

A dedicated conditioning guy make sense to me. That could be a win/win. I remember how gassed we were v USF also

Practicing against a fast past offense should help this too.

He's more than a coach. He's a rock to all Fball alum. Can't move him The alums are starting to circle the wagons for Hicks.

I think their opinions are inconsequential. HCDB should and will make his decision based on who makes us the best possible team we can be. It's his arse on the line not the former players.

As an extension of that, do you think HCDB has had to deal with alumni as much as he will here? I remember hearing Marrone didn't really go out of his way to make alums feel hospitable around the program.

This is ideal and hopefully this will be brought up at one of the fan advisory council meetings.

Long shot, probably not realistic but

Replace Hicks with Markus Paul to alleviate alumni anger
If the major issue against Hicks is injuries this makes no sense since the Giants injury list over the past 3 years has been ridiculous and much worse than SU's.

He probably hasn't had to deal with alumni to the extent he will here. He is a smart, genuine, respectful guy, I think he will handle the S&C decision just fine. Whatever he decides.

Excellent points. 100% agree.

IF Coach Babers believes he needs to bring in a new S&C coach then Athletics can keep Hicks in some other capacity so he can continue to mentor and advise athletes. (Maybe across all sports?) He can still work with former football players when they come back to train.

Re statements like "he's made huge gains under Hicks": Frankly, every athlete should be expected - with hard work and focus - to make *significant* gains under ANY collegiate S&C program and diet. Anything less sucks.

I hope/believe that Coach will do what he believes he needs to do to maximize the team's potential. Maybe it is to keep Hicks. We'll see.

It's tacky of these former players to make this public appeal to keep Hicks.

Welcome the new coach. If you want to give him some discreet unsolicited advice about Hicks, fine, but the public appeal is overbearing and inappropriate.

"The team will be conditioned differently than it ever has been before."

Soooooo...

Festivus makes more sense.

Sigh... hopefully this isn't the next SU football battle. The alumni vs the program.

Babers is the first outsider in the program in 25 years (yes I am pretending the he shall not be named years never happened). Shafer, Marrone, Coach P all go back to Coach Mac. Hopefully the alumns let Babers work in peace and just support him no matter what he does.

Exactly. This lobbying by former players is horse poop. Even Nassib can't leave it at "Congrats and Welcome". Has to include the agenda #hashtag. Wteff

Sounds ominous, but not necessarily. HCDB (are we running with this acronym or just using "Dino"?) has successfully run at this pace and has a specific S&C system in place to keep his players fresh. Our prior attempt at high tempo didn't do this. The big question is whether or not he can easily describe his desired approach to Hicks and have it implemented from Day 1. If so, go ahead and keep him. If not, why waste any time with hand holding when he can bring over a guy who is already doing it? That takes one item off of a crowded plate of things to address with a new team/staff/recruits/etc.

I do like the compromise of giving Hicks a strength-related role only, if his ego would allow him to accept it.

I'm ok blowing the whole thing up and starting from scratch. I don't care what a few alumni think. If they want wins like I do, then they should not care either. my mentor in school just left SU to be the president at another a university. Even though he left, I will not stop rooting for the SU to be successful

When Chuck Amato came in as coach in 2000 at NC State Hicks was on the outs and got the Syracuse job. Does anybody know if Hicks was fired?
