I know we have a decent class right now but I'm really starting to doubt we will ever be what we were. It's been 20 years now and honestly, looking at next years schedule it's going to be 21. I believe the only way Syracuse will turn the corner is with a major upgrade from the university. We need the glitz. Be it a new stadium, a major update to the dome, or a big time coach. It doesn't look like any of that is in our future so we Better get lucky on a couple recruits or it's going to be more long seasons with disappointment. Now I'm not usually negative but there really is no end in sight to this. What I'm talking about is what su did in the late 70s with the dome and then a new hire with Mac. Shafer may turn it around but he needs help. It's time the university gives football what it needs. No more hallow retirement ceremonies. Cash is the answer, give it to them!

With the ACC, the Ensley Center, the infusion of money and the higher profile of college football, I am bullish on SU Football.

By the way Coach Mac was a LB coach for the Browns.

He was hardly high profile.

Oh the great mac. It took him 7 years to turn this program around. People want to fire SS after two years.

I'm not saying Mac was high profile. I'm saying the dome being built brought better talent to Syracuse. The university funded the football and basketball program with a new stadium. I'm also going to say that back then we had a pretty amazing staff. P, Fears, gerber, casullo, tressel, oleary... Wasn't Saban on one of those staffs? How many coaches on shafers current staff will turn out like some of those coaches.

The new IPF is a step in the direction you're talking about.

When Mr. Washington commits to us in March and then signs his LOI next Feb that will be start of turning this program around. He will bringother top recruits with him. I think you will see that our 2016 class will be top 25, that is until Mr. Dohn drops everyone down a star because we were getting too far ahead of Rutgirls.

The only thing that will affect wins is a big time coach. Which one of those is currently available?

I dont get why people dont get that this is what is missing. Not facilities etc. now shaf may turn into a big time coach but if not, we need to cough up a real salary to a proven guy. Also, i dont buy the argument "who would come here". Theres a lot of good football coaches we could consider. Think of the pelinis of the world.

Not to mention, there weren't a lot of expectations heading into the 1987 season. As an incoming freshman that year, I was very surprised at the lack of enthusiasm towards the football season around campus prior to the first game against Maryland.

I have a good feeling about the incoming recruiting class. I think all we need is some stability in the offensive coaching staff. Regardless of the system, we just need to pick one and stick with it for a few years.

New IPF is up and operational, weight room is good, locker rooms have been reno'd, facilities have been reno'd, Dome has received updates and will likely continue to. As Glitz goes, we're in good shape and lightyears from where we were 5 years ago.

Recruiting is on the upswing as well so if you have any faith in the current coaching staff, which I do, then we should be back in the top 25 sooner vs later. Next years schedule is tough BUT within in the next 3 years we will be a team nobody wants to play.

It is frustatrating that we can't seem to get over the hump. We seemed poised after 2012 / 2013 to potentially take the next step, and instead we backslid.

I agree with those who posted above that the IPF, influx of additional revenues into the athletic department budget, improved conference [with a reach into the south], and improved recruiting are all significant foundational pieces of the puzzle upon which to build.

However, our coaching is suspect [putting it mildly], our offense is offensive, and we haven't landed any blue chip recruits in a LONG time. At least one of those three things needs to change for us to get to the next level.

We've gone the route of incremental improvement, and progress is tangible but SLOW. And we seem to have plateaued [and last year, regressed].

Yeah, and I should have included HCSS in my statement as I think it is still too early to judge him harshly. But there has to be a plan in place to go after a big name coach under certain conditions ...
