I’ll be that guy

So we take our foot off the gas and coast into halftime when we clearly could have scored. Dino agrees to shorten the remainder of the game by 10 minutes because he doesn’t want anyone else on his team hurt. His words mind you. Then we come out with our starters. Two of which the QB and RB our season is effectively over if either one of them gets hurt.

You keep saying show me another coach that hasn’t played there starters in the second half of a blow out. I say show me a coach that has agreed to shorten the game by 10 minutes to reduce the risk of more injuries to his team and then throws out the starting lineup.

It’s BS and just another example of Dino’s disjointed logic.

It was dumb but I’m over it. Let’s get healthy and clobber NC State in two weeks.

In the words of Jim Rome "Rack Him"

You want to be that’s naive because your favorite team coach played starters for one series in the second half? Go ahead my guy and be angry. Lol.
I’m not angry, just discussing strategy. For the record, I would not have played Shrader, Tucker, and perhaps some other vital players at all. I believe a rusty Shrader will be better against NC State than an injured Shrader.

If you think keeping guys out automatically makes them healthy than I don’t know what to tell you. Lol.
It reduces their chances of being injured in the game to almost zero.

“You believe” where did you get your beliefs and strategies from? That’s some enlightening stuff.

Obviously a player on the field is going to be better than one on the sideline. It's not debatable. Weird that you think it is.

Dinos not the a very good decision maker. This was an excellent opportunity to get Carlos, the Rbs and the rest of the reserves much needed experience. These kids bust their butts all year and instead of building depth and giving his
"Underbelly " valuable game reps he risk his star player and other starters up 48 to zip.
I dont think hes stupid but hes certainly not the brightest bulb in the lamp. Ridiculous decision on his part.
Meathead squared.

What if you were told it was Anae’s call? There’s plenty of indicators that was the case. In an interview, I believe Shraders, it was said Anae had pointed out the record to him and Tucker. When Tucker came out of the medical tent with helmet in hand, meaning medical had cleared him to play, it was Anae, not Babers not the RB coach, who sat down on the bench next to him sharing a smile (Sean wanted to continue playing since he was cleared). Babers is the HC for the whole team. Why wasn’t the same play the first half strategy used for the defense? Jones played 13 snaps, Williams and Chestnut fewer than 15, etc. While the offensive starters were playing 40+.

Really? Is that right? Thanks for the great info. I’m learning a lot today.

You acted like it was an unfounded take.
What take are you talking about? That most coaches play their starters 1 series in the second half despite the score? That’s not a take. Lol. That’s standard.

FYI. Morris set the record of 252 yards against Kansas in 1979. SU trailed 21-7 after the first quarter but went on to win 45-28. It was a complete blowout after the first quarter. All the games that season were played on the road because the Dome was being built. It’s not every day that a back can rusher for over 200 yards. I give the coaches some credit for giving Sean a chance. He would have had the record if the 31 yard TD in the first half had not been called back.

If he twisted his ankle in the 1st quarter people would say why did he play at all. lol You cant coach hoping your best player doesnt get hurt. He's gotten hurt worse in practice. People want him to stop practicing too?
Exactly. You have no idea what play an injury could occur. Shoot like half of football injuries are non contact. How many reps did Vasquez get before he was done for the year?

You know what happens to starters on a football team that get benched in games like that?

I believe that since the penalty occurred downfield at the 8, he was still credited with a 23 yard run. Then gained a few more from the 18.

They will all enter the transfer portal because they feel the coach is letting up? Pretty sure thats the answer after reading this thread.

Some don’t even consider than not playing healthy players can be bad for injury prevention as well.

No but you wind up with unhappy players. There’s a reason games like Wagner are scheduled. You don’t then run a scrimmage against backups. Defeats the whole purpose

Come on! It’s a balance. The coaching staff felt there was something to gain by testing some halftime tweaks against an unfamiliar opponent. Anae was aware of the record Sean was chasing and wanted to give him one last opportunity. Dino weighed the benefits and risks and followed a well established strategy to allow his starters to play one series in the second half of a blow out.
We can disagree with the decision but the rationale is clear and has been stated. There were no negative consequences. Sean is fine and the starters that entered the Wagner game will be against NC State. We’re 5-0 and you can’t be any better than that. Let it go!
Sean has been hurt way worse in practice. So let’s start resting all the starters during practice. That’s a great strategy. You don’t practice. You don’t get hurt. Now that’s brilliant coaching.

I have a feeling those same starters would have been just fine just playing the first half or rotating in and out heavily like RU did starting in the 2nd quarter when they played Wagner. Games like Wagner are scheduled so you can get a sure W for bowl eligibility and the fans can sit back and watch SU woodshed a team. At 49-0 at half I think anyone who has an ounce of football knowledge knows the "score" and that its probably time for a backup fest on both sides. Either way its over now and the real hard part starts.

No, that a player on the sideline is less effective than the one on the field.

Honestly might be the most rational response in the thread. Other than holding up Rutgers as a paragon of football strategy expertise, of course. We rotated offensive line and entire defense extensively in the first half, but left the core skill position players on offense in for virtually every snap. Playing Allen, Hatcher and Del Rio Wilson a series each of the first quarter, then running the starters out for the first series in the third sounds like a very sound approach.
