I am sure I will get killed for this

Every team is dealing with the same thing. Every team has players that opted out or declared for the draft.

Every team had less practices and no spring ball.

Its kind of like when it rains, both teams have to deal with it and play in it.

The 3 DB's that UNC didn't have yesterday didn't seem to affect their secondary, but naturally ours were "bigger" losses right?

If the teams were evenly matched talent wise you might have a point. But they aren't.

Only one was a starter.

In the absence of all that stuff that you mentioned, talent (bigger and faster) will win out. That’s the story of yesterday, IMO

I couldn't agree more. This is year 5, again year 5 of the Dino era, using Covid as an excuse is convenient and weak as hell...all teams have been and are dealing with it. Just as last year when Dino cried about not having any tape on that Maryland debacle. A frigging joke. Put on your big boy pants Dino and take ownership, you are 100% responsible as the captain of the ship for your team's personnel and the ensuing results...period!

Just as Ithaca stated, losing becomes a habit. And, one thing you'll typically always find with losing, there isn't any shortage of excuses.

It's game one.

Interesting, that we only lost one potential starter as well.

I didn't mention talent at all for a reason, that is a separate discussion. With regard to preparation, SU lost 2 practices, UNC lost 4 so we were technically supposed to be better off with conditioning and all the stuff you mentioned in an earlier post. Except we weren't.

Nobody is saying that they weren't more talented that we are, they just are and there is no disputing that.

Was extremely disappointing to say the least.

It's not a separate discussion if you want to look into a prime driver on why the offense was as unproductive as it was. Again they need the prep time to work on their timing, and if they want to equalize the disparity, run more plays, which requires their conditioning to be excellent. That's the impact.

If that happens Dino needs to be on the hot seat. That is unacceptable.

This is ridiculous. We can never hire anyone as good as DB to win 1-2 games. If we let him go we’ll never win 4 games a season again.

This is so ridiculous. Just off the top of my head; Dino's understudy, Sean Lewis couldn't do worse at the least...

The we didn't have the tape line was the first time I went "uh oh" with this staff. The continued mistakes with penalties, undisciplined play, red zone play calling and clock management have become a theme and one of the concerns I have with Babers

It’s only year 5, he’ll get better at these things...

So you are saying talent and preparation are the same thing? And that more talent leads to better preparation?

I respectfully completely disagree.

I will agree that statistically the more talented team should win but again, having more talent has zero to do with how each team is prepared.

All teams require conditioning, all teams require timing to run their schemes.

It’s silly to blow this off as an overreaction to 1
game. It’s what we’ve seen a majority of the seasons he’s been coaching. All the things Jeremycuse has already listed, the worst 3rd down offense and defense in the country most of the the years of his tenure, the blowouts we’ve seen, an offensive genius coach who’s offense is like watching a Shafer run team again.

It’s not one game that people’s frustrating is coming from.

yeah that’s exactly what I’m saying,

I'm still very much a Baber's supporter. However, I do have to say, my confidence is waning. If Babers and staff can't recruit better than what we have over the last 20 years or so, results will largely be the same. They just will. You can have an outlier 10 win season once a decade with less talent (out perform), but the other years will likely be the same 4-7 win variety.

There's a reason that Alabama and Clemson are the teams that they are. Put Saban on the Orange sidelines with the same talent that we have now and he too would eventually be run off. Put Coach K somewhere that doesn't have boosters purchasing players, he too would look less "amazing". We can't expect to be much better than what we've seen on the field for years without a significant upgrade in talent.

The last couple of years have shown as clear as day how our former beast warrior (Dungey) single handedly won games. He made up for mediocre offense. He made up for mediocre talent around him. We no longer have that crutch, and we're seeing it now.

That all said, I still have faith. Why not? I still bleed Orange!

We came off a 10 win season TWO YEARS AGO. ONLY THIRTEEN GAMES AGO. Can we not act like he went 4-8 for the last four seasons?

Dino is 23-27 in his time at SU. 2 games worse than Marrone at this point in his tenure. He's won a bowl game. He's upset multiple ranked teams.

This whole thread is an absurd overreaction to ONE GAME in a season where kids probably shouldn't be playing, with no spring practice.

Tommy in fairness to him has no one to hand the ball off to. In this case that isn't on Dino. Pretty easy to tee off on the guy. Shame is literally 2 passes and 1 flag and it's a completely different game.

We had a big boy defense out there.
There was no run game because the defense came up and crowded the line daring TD to beat them. He did not.

Who do you think we would get? Not a lot of coaches have su at the top of their list right now. Dino is a great person and coach. My only knock is that he has not incorporated more into the offense and seems not willing to pull TD like he did dungey when he was not playing good.

I think some of the things I pointed out are concerns but I don't disagree with you either. I'm going to take a back seat, relax, and see how things play out.

Dungey had legit comp w Devito behind him, so Dino could actually do that and have it:
A - not lose the game
B - motivate him to do better to keep QB1 job.

Who of the backups is Dino going to “threaten” Tommy with??

After Tommy won the UNC game, Dungey came back and had a career game vs NC State.

That comp helped him up his game.
Who’s pushing Tommy in our QB room?

I'm concerned with a lot of things, but it's not like we were playing an FCS team. If we don't improve in the next 3-4 games then maybe I'll be more upset but I can't get as worked up as most on this thread over a single result.

It's also funny how many people were like "this isn't a real season" or "I'm not going to expect much because of the circumstances" and then immediately pulled their knives out after Saturday.

Exactly why I want to hang onto Dino as long as we can. There's no one that we're going to bring in that's better. How's Les Miles working out for Kansas? No one is a guaranteed success. Dino won 10 games in a season here. I'd give him AT LEAST 2 more years before he'd go on the hot seat.

AND - he and the new assistants (and the old ones too) seem to be doing an improved job on the ‘crootin’ trail -

This could be our best class (in spite of some absurd downgrades and low rankings) in at least a decade, probably much longer.

But no, fire everybody now and burn it all to the ground, because reasons.

Syracuse just extended Dino, and he just hired 2 new coordinators & 2 assistants.
There’s a zero point zero chance that ANY of them get fired this year, or even feel any warmth of their seats.

It's game one.

Your awareness to this being “game one” is remarkably astute. 14 pages in...perhaps you
should revisit the OP...I find myself in complete agreement with his overall sentiment.

You are free to appease/rationalize/make excuses, etc. as you wish, however, for me, I see a lot of the similarities (in “game one”) that have pretty consistently plagued Dino’s teams during the majority of his tenure to date. So yeah, in YEAR 5 of “game one” I don’t share your seemingly myopic view, but one along the lines of...the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I think he deserves longer than that. He is a great representative for the university, great guy. Tremendous charismatic leader.

He has shown that he will make changes and do what needs to be done, we just need better results. He just needs to find a way to win more games.

Whether that means bagmen, cash or coaching changes I don't know.

We seemed to get penalized for dumb stuff, we might as well do something that makes a difference and is actually a real punishable offense.

Just kidding of course.
