I guess JB Forgot how to Coach again between Saturday and tonight

VIRGINIA UNDER TONY BENNETT IS ONE OF THE PREMIER DEFENSIVE TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY YEAR AFTER YEAR.
Yeah, they lost to San Francisco. I guess the defense took the night off.

I can't wait for next spring when your schtick is freaking out about him turning pro too early.

The whole board does. Like actively roots for guys ready or unready to leave early. All these insiders never say a guy is coming back always hes gone ready or not.

And while JB is 3-8 against Bennett in the ACC, that doesn't even really tell the whole story.

Our margins of victory in our three wins are 6, 4 and 8.

UVA's are 19, 12, 8, 7, 15, 16, 14 and 23.

They’re better than us. Don’t they have a handful of 30 win seasons in there?

Number 8 team in the Country on the road.

Yea, the atmosphere there was very overwhelming. Our guys could hardly hear each other with the deafning noise. On the road this season is not like on the road in literally any other season in time. Enough excuses. We got blitzed. It was an embarrassment. Losing is 1 thing. Getting picked apart is a whole other ball of wax.

I suggest people chill out for a second and not go nuclear with every loss. It reads like a hundred people in a cave with one shouting, “hey, we’re not good like we were!” Then 99 people echo back “we all know.” Then a slight pause before another guy shouts, “hey, we’re not good anymore.”

And it goes on and on. Who are we shouting at?
The worst defensive BACKCOURT in the ACC and its not even close.

The worst defensive BACKCOURT in the ACC and its not even close.

All starts at Center. Guards (and Forwards) have too much ground to cover because they have to help Marek too much.

Goodine and Carey were both recruited there (they’re combo guards). So there were other guys recruited. They didn’t work out because they didn’t show much when they played.

Kadary playing 30 minutes is probably not the answer that wins this team more games. When he’s played against the better teams, he hasn’t done anything that wows you. He played well against VT; everybody did (well, not Buddy lol). Could Buddy have sat more against VT? Sure. Did it have any affect on the game? Not really.

So people can rail about nepotism all they want, and I agree his minutes should be dialed back a little bit, but there really aren’t appreciably better options on this roster. Griffin cannot play SG.

So, recruiting is an issue. We knew recruiting was an issue when the season started. Why do we have to whine about it now? Didn’t we all whine about it plenty before? Did the staff intend to be thin at guard? No, they thought Carey and Goodine could play at this level. They thought wrong. Strike against them, but that’s a strike they had against them to start the season. Again, why complain about recruiting right now? Just to commiserate over the dead horse that’s been beaten to dust, I guess?
Well dont you think the coach should evaluate and start looking to upgrade the talent on the roster by doing some actually recruiting by sending out offers at the position that is not up to par? or is this now the mediocre standard and we will not address the flaws just go into next year with only 3 guards and questionable distribution of minutes.

Competition within a team is good, it brings out the best in individuals. It is hard for teams and individuals to get better if they dont have anyone who is a threat to their playing time.

I would love to hear what annonymous ACC coaches say about this team.

Losing sucks. It sucks most for coaches and players. I don’t believe the claims of nepotism are valid. The coaches, starting with JB, believe the best way to win is with the guys he rolls out there. Personally I am a little curious how a zone with Kadary and Griff up top would look. This assumes Braswell at the 3. I actually think we could be much better defensively with this line up - but I have to believe the coaches have discussed this and nixed it.

I get the frustration. We all cope differently with it. I just feel sick about attacking JB as I know he is a good man with real feelings. I keep my fingers crossed he can right the ship. It all starts with A+ talent...we need some blue chippers to help us...easier said than done as there is a lot of competition for good players.

Yeah, because they’re a very good team and we’re a) not b) missing our Center (the single biggest reason the defense didn’t work)

Most teams would probably just play their next center, and while he wouldn’t be as good - the backup C at bigtime b-ball schools should at least be functional.

We play a kid whose undersized even for the PF spot there and get mauled, even though we know going in what’s going to happen.

They're clueless. Don't waste your time. When we beat NCSU, they will go into hiding again until we lose, or kcsu will make some post about how JB finally played Kadary enough. Rinse, repeat. It's not even laughable at this point. It's just pathetic.

Kinda like the team over the last 3-4 years.

I disagree with your point about competition always being a good thing. I don’t mind competition, it’s fine. But players can thrive and grow without it. And of course they can thrive and grow with it.

Boeheim’s pitch to a 2021 guard is tough. I don’t think we’re in the running for any of the big time ones and it’s probably too late to get in. Why? Because we were planning on a future lottery pick Playing PG in 2022, not because Buddy and Joe are on the team.

Since Buddy and Joe and Kadary are on the team, that’s 3 guys splitting 80 minutes. If we were able to get in on a high level Guard recruit late, we’d probably have to convince him he’s going to immediately play at least decent minutes. That’s a tough sell, since we’d be talking about a 4 star, likely, and we’ve seen plenty of 4 stars in recent history who don’t have the goods. It’s a bit of a crap shoot and gamble on both sides. The coaches don’t want to over-promise and the player doesn’t want to get stuck on the bench.

The alternative is to get some 3 star and hope he’s a diamond in the rough. It’d likely just be a “warm body” addition. Yeah, Buddy was a 3 star but he plays much better than a typical 3 star recruit. The chances of landing one who is a plus over Buddy or Joe are slimmm.

I would like to see Anselem. Jesse should at least get some minutes every game Anselem and Sidibe are out, but Jesse is still very awkward out there.

The only logical place to get to with these criticisms is a new coach. The staff and AD don’t concern themselves with how fans feel about the coaching/recruiting. Collectively, we fans all know the team’s shortcomings. We have hundreds of posts a day complaining about the same things. It just gets tiresome, from my perspective. If people are complaining for the sake of complaining, my question is why.
Yeah, folks need to take their complaints and criticisms somewhere else- instead of bringing them here...to an SU message board no less! That oughta learn ‘em!

I know. You don't have to yell. The question is, why? Are the players superior? Is the coaching superior? The other question is, why are we not competitive with them and the rest of the top of the ACC? We used to be.

Its maddening the coach can't make simple adjustments and the guys buried this year are good its not Carey/Goodine who can't see the floor at their new schools.

But this team isn't bad. We'll be favorites or slight underdogs rest of the way.

Most of the frustrations are on the coach and his overuse of the starting back court.

If we're finding time for the SG to get minutes at SF surely we can find time to try this out?

If for no other reason than to see how the defense performs with Kadary and the really athletic undersized SF - The one that seems to really enjoy trying hard on defense (not saying he's the best at being where he's supposed to be, but he does like to get after it).

Agree soo much with this. This is the first time I’ve ever watched a CUSE team knowing that the coach is just as much of the problem right now. JB made this program, and he’s earned the right to stay as long as he wants, and I don’t think the grass will be greener once he’s gone(I hope that it is). But this is the team he has recruited. He hand picked this group...to run his “offense” and “defense”...and it doesn’t take a genius to see it’s a round peg square hole scenario. We have good players, they just aren’t being put in a situation to succeed as a team. As a coach you’ve got to be able to recognize when something isn’t right, and you’ve got to try something to help your team. Rolling the ball out each timedoing the same thing, and expecting change is just insanity.

We don’t have a single iso player on our roster...so they need to move the ball more...Not happening.

We don’t have the athletes to even play anything that would resemble a decent zone defense. Perhaps try switching it up to try and stick to shooters. Not happening. The game has changed soo much even in the last few years that just about everyone can shoot. You just can’t leave anyone wide open and expect that the shooting percentages will even out anymore. The game has evolved, JB should as well(a man that has his basketball knowledge is more than capable...but we all know he does things his way).

Sorry to vent...just want soo much to see this program back where it belongs!

GO ORANGE!!

When did we compete with that team apart from the tournament game when it looked like we would get blown out. Even 2014 we got ran.

We might do better than people expect rest of the way. Shame asking for minor adjustments from the coach isn’t gonna happen.

You're thinking too recently. I'm speaking historically. Through most of JB's tenure we are a top 25 team and it hasn't been out of the ordinary for us be top 10.

If you're beating your chest over an NC State win, well... I guess that says it all.

Y'all are like the group of old guys at the Lodge in Everybody Loves Raymond. Hilariously miserable.
