If I were Autry

Seriously, GMAC (whom I love as a Syracuse legend so no hate here) was so sought after, that he went to a program that won 4 games last year
And we all know there were other factors involved in the Red choice that made Gmac a non-starter. Wildhack, who I rarely defend, had no choice once internal was the path chosen.

Perfect match. A program that was good, has fallen on hard times looking for a savior. They were in the NCAA’s in 2008,2009,2010. They have had a number of head coaches hired for P5 programs after achieving success at Siena. Mike Deane, Paul Hewitt, Louie Orr, Fran McCaffrey etc had all started their D1 careers as head coaches at Siena. Rob Lanier went to SMU and Rice. If GMac has success there, he will be a hot name and get a P5 program to lead. They have a 14,500 seat arena and are looking to be relevant again.

loving something doesn’t mean lying about it like people like you think.

I love Syracuse basketball. I don’t have to pretend it’s in great shape.

love GMac, but he got hired by Siena, not some big name school. Just accepting reality
So he’s not a good coach then….right?

All of this is fantastic. I hope he kills it and have been rooting him on. And I hope he’s ready for a big job in 5 years or whatever.

But can we all agree the Siena job isnt a big time job? Or do we have to pretend

Nope. He’s just not ready to be a head coach at the level of the Syracuse job.
Ok, thanks for clearing that up for me. Sounds like you have a keen athletic director type eye for these things.

How many young assistants not even associate head coaches, get big time jobs for their first coaching jobs unless it’s at the place they are already an associate head coach or an assistant? Why so negative? What job did you expect him to land to impress you?

its negative to suggest GMac isn’t ready for a job the level of Syracuse? Bizarre.

Hop went to WASHINGTON.

im not the one suggesting we made a mistake not hiring GMac. Take it up with them.

i think Siena is the perfect place for him right now

I agree with Djcon (and we haven’t always seen eye to eye on everything). I love GMAC and he is one of my all time favorite Cuse players. I think gmac will develop into a very good coach. I do think he would have been a better choice than Autry but feel that neither he nor Autry should have been handed the keys to the Cuse. We were once a big time program. We want to get there again and I would have preferred a national search and finding either a proven coach or a national known recruiting dynamo. We needed to start fresh

Huh? Who said he was? Not me - I never said anything about it. You just seemed to take offense and make assumptions because I said something positive in saying ihe was a perfect match first and how many coaches went to major D1 schools through Siena. it’s a good spot to have success and be rewarded for it. Hop was the associate head coach here before heading to Washington, GMac wasn’t.

Did you read the thread before responding to my post?

The comment was “If I were Autry Id call GMAC and tell him they picked the wrong guy”

My response was the idea that neither were the “right guy” and the fact that GMac went to Siena was a suggestion that he might not be ready for this level of job.

You then responded with a wiki link to Siena basketball.

I don’t take “offense” but I did question your post because you responded to my post. Usually if once quotes a post, the response is to something said in the post.

Nothing I said in any post was negative. However there are posts in the thread calling the current coach and his staff a “clown show”. Guess that’s positive?

I was thinking more about this

i think Red should basically stop working from his "ideal vision"...and try to create it with the peices he has

i think he has a vision of how he wants the team to play that the players simply cannot do...he needs to let go of whatever ideal he has in his mind and get real

he needs to be pragmatic and work with what he has...and go from there

bascially i think what he is doing is ...start from his blueprint...then mix and match players to fit that (but inevitably fall short bc the roster has holes)

instead...i think he needs to find the best mix of players and make a strategy from there

needs to accept that there might be some disadvantages...i.e. maybe not many assists, maybe too many turnovers, maybe not enough rebounds etc etc...maybe no ballhandler

you dont need to win stat categories...you need to win the game

this might all seem obvious what im saying but

i think hes holding on too tightly too some preconceived notions about what he "needs" from the team i.e. stats and roles ...and filtering everything he s doing through that lens...

instead of simply focusing on WINNING

i think hes getting lost in the stats and analytical aspect

for example, JB often had teams that didnt rebound well didnt shoot free throws well didnt gt many assists had centers that could not dribble or pass or score...but he had long teams that got a lof steals and blocks...he had dynamic wings that could do everything and shoot 3s etc...he took his tradeoffs and made it work somehow...he gave up some things that most people think you need to win and won anyway

i think red needs to get creative and forget about doing it "the right way" or according to his "plan" or "style of play" and just find a way to maximize winning

i think he is trying to do that somewhat..thats why he put cuffe in last game and played taylor a lot too...i think red really struggles to connect which aspects of the game and his teams play truly do impact winning and which ones dont, basically. which is why hes getting so much heat from fans...its absoultely brutal right now...gott be hard to hold the line.

if i had to rank the players on the team in terms of sheer competitiveness

i would go:
1. cuffe / taylor/moore
2. JJ/Eddie/davis
3. freeman/petar/westry
4. carlos/bell/mcleod

and if I had to (roughly) rank the players in terms of sheer talent
1. freeman
2. jj
3. eddie
4. moore
5. bell
6. davis
7. taylor
8. cuffe
9. westry (current form...otherwise much higher)
10. petar
11. carlos
12. naheem

anyways I think he just needs to focus on these two lists...who is talented ?? and who is competitive???

i think he tried in the wake game to go with the lunchpail lineup and t almost worked, if not for the horrific start and absoulte faliure to make adjustments in the 2nd half...

get freeman shots!!! get eddie postups!! get open 3s for bell, moore, etc...keep it simple

the talented players need to be the ones taking the shots. period.

and the more competitive players need to be out there as much as possible, as well.

the adjustments he makes need to be relevant to the game itself not his vision for what the team should or shouldnt be etc...exploit matchups and play the team you are playing not your vision of what the team should or shouldnt be.

lastly with a "deep" roster of middling players...why not go with pressure defense...and press??? get these guys in and out of the game and make it hectic? something to try...and this is what im getting at...throw the roles and "proper" way of playing out the window...what do you have to lose at this point?

You can coach but you can't put the ball in the basket for them. It's all on them.

Red got his guys, but now he needs new guys because they aren't good enough... Got it.

Doesn’t exactly sound like love to me.
Good lord, enough of this crap from you. Fans can love Red as a former player, alumnus, and human being while recognizing that he's not getting the job done. Likewise, fans can love GMac without wanting to thrust him into the SU HC position since that is not generally how a career trajectory works, and he is simply not qualified.

There is nothing "disloyal", "two-faced"-- or anything else you want to say-- about people that are well beyond the denial stage you seem to still be in. If Wildhack is listening to a bunch of old insiders that are more worried about losing their connections in the program than being successful, Cuse basketball truly is doomed.

Some good stuff here. Just to quibble a bit...

- Not sure I'd put Carlos ahead of Naheem
- Bell is ranked too high in your rating (what he could be or was last year isn't what he is now)
- I think you're spot on with Red holding onto what he would ideally want out of this team. I think Boeheim did that too though in the last handful of years. That was his demise.
- I love your idea about playing pressure defense or press with the deep group we have (mediocre as they). I'd like to see ANYTHING different. Why the hell not? For me, I'd love to see 2-3 minutes for Carlos and start anyone at PG who can create offense, able to shoot well, can make the game easier for his teammates, and is at least 6 ft tall. I think some would be amazed that there are others on this team who could dribble a basketball up the court and pass around the perimeter.

The guy has been here less than a year and a half and you want to ride him out of here. Just stop with the I love him as a human being crap when you don't even want to give him a reasonable amount of time to get it going again.

A reasonable amount of time for basic functionality as a coach? This is what leads to hiring unqualified candidates in the first place. He got a pass on a lot of his warts last year due to all of the "personalities" on the team and the extremely low expectations. No excuse now whatsoever.

Folks like you, if they have influence, would turn us into Georgetown in no time. Well on our way...
