If I were Autry

I don't know who posted the hustle thing originally, but it's baloney. Frankly its ridiculous that these guys act like politicians (different story) raising money like they do.
Bulldog and someone else (I forget who) said that in Red's first year he didn't ask some folks for money. It was only recently (I take it this past summer) that he did. Seems like it was a year too late.

Would you take less money for a bigger role and more work?
Wait, did we really lose our #1 target over $200K?!

Please tell me that's not the case.

I don't know the whole story on this, or who to believe. But I did go to one event this summer, and I can tell you being aggressive wasn't the issue. He was pretty clear about how much he needed, they had it all mapped out and that he needed people to step up. Even texted me the next day to get me to donate as I'm sure he did to everyone else that the event. (I did donate, but I'll just tell you that I'm not moving any needles, too much real life stuff to pay for).

I really enjoyed meeting him that night. He was very personable but again, very serious about what they needed to compete. And as I left I remember thinking what a thankless job this is to go around asking people for money to pay the players. And then to probably have to go back to the same limited number of people and keep asking them to give again.

I'll always root for him. He's one of us. If it doesn't work out then so be it. Hope he finds happiness back as an assistant or whatever else he decides to do.
Great post.

The "Red is reluctant to ask donors for NIL" might have been true last season. But, think even that might have been exaggerated. I know with certainty that Red has spent a lot of time fund-raising this season. There is a growing sense that his time spent fund raising is taking away from the time he should be devoting to the team.

I honestly don't remember the number. And don't know if it was a Jesse situation where we'd get bid up anyway. But whatever it was we were tapped.

Don't know the UGa #, Kline did present (and I didn't take a picture of the slide) the SEC NIL in general dwarfing the ACC's. Showed this past month.
I get the disparity. But I’m just stuck on the notion that Leffew was our #1 target. That’s the guy you gotta land if that’s the case. If not, I don’t think you get to hand wave a disastrous season away because the Plan B is a train wreck.

This is precisely why I want people to be more honest in their posts here. It sure would be good to know how aggressive, or not, our NIL efforts have been. And how that has changed.

Instead too many people who supposedly know just talk down to people for not knowing.

Lol if I'm a professional athlete, maybe. If I'm working at burger king, no.
And Day2 I'm well documented on here saying we have a NIL problem -- started with denial and then turned into playing catch up but thinking previous year's numbers were the threshold. Just saying if we're never going to be a top notch NIL destination but want to be a top notch program, we need to find a way to get recruits here with less money. Leffew was a chance to do that and we whiffed. NIL is the single biggest factor for getting portal players though, I agree. Unfortunately after this year I no longer think NIL is our biggest problem, but it's our biggest long term problem.

Reynolds was #1. St Joe's paid him (he's probably their whole budget).

Four of the top 6 teams in the AP basketball poll are traditional SEC football teams with crazy deep pockets.

Tenn, Auburn, Bama and Florida. To have all of them near the top is highly unusual…but something we should get used to.

The SEC is paying coaches and players more than anyone else. Their war chests are dwarfing traditional basketball powers, especially those who are also trying to compete in football.

We’re behind in the arms race on the hoops side.

The vast majority of the posters here understand this. The fans here are asking to complete with the likes of Wake Forest, I know, seems impossible

Serious question. So you’re take on Lampkin from above. So are you saying that because we got Lampkin we should be able to keep up with the SEC schools? Or are you saying (and I think you are) we should have spent the money on Leffew instead… or neither?

This is quibbling, I agree with your overall point, but I'd say Florida has a pretty substantial basketball pedigree (and one more championship than us). I used to compare them to Syracuse as being "one of the other schools that was good at both." Sadly, that was a long time ago.

But the bigger issue is the one djcon57 pointed out. Let's worry about not being the dregs of the ACC first, and then worry about keeping up with the SEC Joneses.

We got an angry Derrick Coleman.

My loan comment was referring to the PE thread.

It’s hilarious how no one will just answer the questions about Lampkin. But somehow everyone knows the answers for all the guys we didnt get

How did we pay Lampkin?
Does Lampkin get more or less than Reynolds?

I’ve made my point repeatedly.

Yes or No, is Lampkin the highest paid player on our team.

On the team? I don’t know. Highest paid portal player for sure.

So, I’m curious your answer to my question above.

I don't know how he got paid and who would've gotten more.

Maybe just ask the guy if you care so much.

I can share this -- we got Lampkin originally for about half of what we ended up having to pay him. Kid was excited to come here, and committed to Syracuse not long after he showed out in the NCAA tournament.

The coaching staff crossed center off the list, and started working other players in the portal to fill other needs. Several weeks later, Lampkin came back to the coaching staff with a much higher demand. Why? Because an SEC school in his home state made overtures, and bid him up.

Chip and Bayside can probably speak to this better, but the hoops program has some mathematical models about how much they think players are "worth." What Lampkin asked for exceeded the value that they projected, but at that late stage we couldn't pivot easily and didn't have alternatives, so they came up with the extra $$$. And when he dragged his feet and came back with additional demands, we ponied up [and not all of the demands were cash considerations].

Bottom line, what we ended up paying for Lampkin and what we initially got him for were two different numbers. That MAY have impacted the NIL coffers and limited how we could spend on other players -- but to me the bottom line is that it was merely a symptom of the actual problem, that our NIL war chest is too small

This is correct as to my understanding.
