If I were the AD

I... just, did... his performance didn't allow it?

He completed less than 40% of his passes.

Cuse had 322 yards total offense today.

We had 132 versus Florida State. And 330ish against UVA.

Mahoney commanded a threatening offense today and showed bursts.

The better question...why did Erv Phillips touch the ball ONCE, which is for a 28-yd TD? Only one pass threw to him. And with Fredericks knocked out, it seemed like his shake could have been used.

Haha, yeah.

We had some great big plays today. But the O overall was still subpar.

You need to genuinely learn something:

- It was not Gross' decision. He had to deal with the ramifications. And to be clear, I was there when it (awkwardly) went down.
- A posthumous article in the local paper is weak, weak "proof"
- Your argument isn't about P being let go...but for the reasons? Kinda...wha?

The decision was not impulse. It was the final final straw. Timing, as you agree, stunk and the hire to replace him stunk as bad.

But P. Needed. To. Go.

And if he used his wonderful football wisdom over 30 days to prepare for Georgia Tech, perhaps that situation would have unfolded better, and slightly later, for all.

Thankfully we haven't had to worry about "horrible" losses to the Temples and Rutgers of the world since he was fired, as we've probably been underdogs in 70% of the games played in the last decade. I agree that the decision was the start of this "mess".

I am sick and tired of moral victories. Clemson came out flat like the SU hoops team does against Colgate, Cornell, etc. Coyle needs to create a buzz in the community about SU football and giving Shafer an extension will do just the opposite.
I don't really care about the coaching situation... but Clemson came out flat?? They scored 14 points in the first two minutes... Try again, try again, try again...

And P helped usher the downfall.

GRob accelerated it. Marrone stopped it. And now, it's back.

How P, whose 2004 season was marred with major and highly seen embarrassing losses and horrible talent, wasn't the START of the mess is crazy.

Was Kirk Ferentz the start of the problem in Iowa after back to back 6 win seasons in '06 or '07? Or 4-8 in 2012?

Wrong.

Holy cow... I really miss those days. Look at all of those passes over the middle.. quick slants, etc. That was pretty to watch. Can we get this back again?

I can't do it.

Ferentz never got destroyed to kingdom come like P did multiple times and in 2006, they lost their top four RBs to injury early in the season. Come on. P was in year 14 and the decline in his record was evident.

And P did what with UCONN? Nothing. Did not even last three years.

Goodness, he did great here but his time had come. There was no slingshot rebound a coming under him.

We had stopped spending money on the program 10 years prior while our peers were making serious upgrades.

All the guy had to do was beat a terrible Temple team and I'm sure he have been retained,

And the CEO of the football program's job is to push back or else.

Didn't Marrone do that?

Goodness.

Don't people read what goes on with the business of college sports?

We have no idea what was going on behind the scenes at that time.

Buzz. Crouthamel.

Old school.

Sometimes you have to fall behind to realize you need to change your ways.

Who is the you?

If you are a head football coach, I'd say that is the you.

Honestly I think Coyle already knows what he is going to do and the last two games are meaningless in the big picture to Coyle.
Sounds like you might have the same source I have ;)

If I were the AD and I was new to SU football, if probably wonder what bang for my buck I'm getting with a defensive head coach when we've given up 570 yards for 3 straight games. And realizing that the D HC was the DC for the 4 years prior. I'd wonder how we got here?

And even if I bought into some of the rationalizations (career ending injuries, early defections, team rules violations), I'd think that if I'm going to have to suffer thru bad D, I might as well get an O guru to run the show and see if we can't at least keep up.

Came into today ranked 115 in the country in net yards per game, negative 106. And were outgained by 250. Only one P5 team is worse, Kansas.

Shafer still controls his own destiny. If he finds away to win the last two games hes probably coming back, if not he is gone. Team played well today but the record is still the record and there were still some of the same coaching mistakes though I thought Lester for the most part called a pretty good game. Gotta give credit to Mahoney kid played his ass off, ditto for most of the offense.

Right on, Jeremy! I must add that today was the best day for our D as well, especially our much abused secondary.
