If we do not win another game?

Absolutely no chance Shafer gets fired this year even if we lose out IMO. We are in every game and sans a few bad calls/dumb plays, we are possibly looking at 6-1. If we were losing every game by 35, different story, but we aren't. We're competitive as hell.

These kids want to win and so does the staff, but the team is SO young they need more time to keep gelling. Next year could be crazy good and I still think we can pull off a major upset this year.

For those who are impatient, well not sure what to tell you. Bringing in another guy at this point is the not the solution.

Bullough needs to go and Daoust needs to be promoted to DC. If Shafer is retained that is the LEAST that should happen.

Agreed. And that's why I think that if there are coaching changes, they need to be made on defense. I think the offense has shown enough improvement, and has enough young talent, that we can compete with people. The defense is what's killing us. If this defense makes a jump, we will be an extremely competitive bowl team, I think. This talented young offense with even a mediocre defense would be 4-3 or 5-2 right now, I don't think there's any question.
Yep. D has really been THAT bad...

attendance is down because fans are fickle. we heard for years if the games were more exciting and the offense moved the ball people would come and watch. were the last 4 games not decided in the last few minutes? defense is not way worse, just more inconsistent, which is what happens when you go young. offense is vastly better, we had 2 quick scoring drives last year.. 11 already this year. thats a huge uptick in how we score if this team had come in today 5-1 would more people have been there?
close and exciting aren't synonyms

Definitely competitive. But I wonder if that's because talent is good and coaching is holding us back. As for impatience...it's just been a LOOOOOONG time...we were spoiled for 15 years...last 15...ugh.

Because he's only finished year #3 of a 5 year contract.
Not saying this is the only reason though I think this might play a role. If we are trying to control costs then buying out one year is easier to manage than two.

Be interesting to see how we do against Clemson. I can't imagine us losing 58-0 like Miami. That should give us an idea too. Miami was at home as well. Yikes

The airplane that tows the banners over Miami will be booked solid.

The staff stays except for maybe 1 or 2 assistant changes. This team will not lose out if they maintain their effort.

He's coming back, but thankfully I feel confident in the new grown ups in charge that the contract has nothing to do with it. I mean of all the reasons to keep a guy...

I might agree if shafer was coyle/Syverud hire.

I don't think that means you can be sure there will be a change.

coach mac > P > maroney> shafer >robinson. my coaching pyramid

We used that line a lot last year too. And injuries. I guess we're good at excuses.

Huh? Not me. I thought we should have won more games. I thought the talent on O wasn't ACC quality.

And if you want to call them excuses that just means you've decided that real evaluation ain't your thing. Which is cool, but I won't take your opinion all that seriously until you do.

I didn't say I was sure. In fact, I've said quite the opposite.

The person you responded to said they weren't sure either way

Lol...I'm not seeking your validation...FYI.

I hate excuses, not just in football, but in everyday life. Everyone has injuries. Everyone plays young guys. Some answer the bell. Others do not.

Honestly, he needs to show he can win a big game. Hell, even GRob was able to beat Notre Dame in South Bend. So far he's only proven that his team can put up a decent challenge for 3 quarters.

It's asking a lot, but one win over Clemson or FSU would do wonders for the program.

I don't think Shafer was a good hire. But ... if we do not get blown out the next several weeks I'm pretty much resigned to the fact he'll be back. In that case Coyle should come out before NC State and give him the proverbial vote of confidence. It doesn't do anybody any good to keep his future tenure up in the air.
As an aside I didn't see any egregious coaching blunders today.

ND was awful that year.
