True. With the timeline it will take to complete such a massive project, he can delay his decision until the job is finished. He won't need to worry about how to fill a dome that's not being used for a full season. If he were to hire Vince Lombardi it would have no impact on attendance at the Dome when they're playing in Buffalo. Combine that, with the fact that there are so many P5 jobs open right now, at schools that are more high profile, and likely willing to pay more money, and I think Coyles decision to keep Shafer for 1 more year is pretty obvious.Folks, if we decide to spend $400 million on dome upgrades it will be Coyle that is under pressure to fill it. I don't know how that changes things in the short term but it does change things.

GoHamSU said:If syracuse goes 3-9 again this year (I don't think we will but it's certainly possible), the attendance next year will be legendary bad.
To start the year it will, but it will pick up if we start winning. But if we do end up losing nine in a row and maintain our staff, then no one can complain when there are 18,000 people against Colgate.
No one really should complain about attendance moving forward this year either.
Hopefully we win some games and prove doubters like me wrong.
SS is not getting fired. Ill take bets if anyone is interested, how do you justify bringing the head coach back when you are 6-18 over two years?
lets spin the other way, Offense has the best looking skill players that we have had for a while and they are all young ( Dungy Fredericks, Ishmael, Estime and strickland. And the Defense has 8 new starters and is slowly getting better, as you would expect. Not being flip at all, but what good things? Recruiting is up IMO, offense is marginally better. Defense is way worse. Attendance stinks. What else?
If we build a $400 million facility, does it make sense to have the lowest paid staff in the conference? Such a costly upgrade may foreshadow an upgrade in the football staff budget. Coyle may have the budget to upgrade the staff salaries allowing him to hire from a much broader field. The job becomes much more attractive with such a demonstrable commitment to the program.
I think it goes without saying that the new dome will be a huge selling point to recruits.
To me, this would be a sea change for the program. While I hope it will be Shafer who has the opportunity to take advantage of this development, but he had better be winning when the gates open or he will be gone.

The only point I would make is that we still are not scoring enough points. We will see how good we really are over the balance of the season against better defenses. If we finish the season with an average of 30+ ppg that will be real improvement. Most talented QB since McNabb
9 Frosh or sophs on two-deep for offense (10 if you include 2nd string QB)
6 Frosh or sophs on two-deep for skill positions
Only 5 seniors on two-deep for offense
No seniors on two-deep at skill positions
14 frosh or sophs on two-deep for defense
3 seniors on two-deep for defense
All frosh or sophs on two-deep in secondary
Scored at least 20 points in every game this year
Have played everyone close except for USF
Lots to look forward to.
Lots of young guys getting lots of experience this year.
Next year will be the put up or shut up year - as long as Dungey stays healthy...

orangeinjersey said:A 400M dome renovation would be a shot in the arm for the program, much like the original Dome. The opportunity shouldnt be wasted. I'm not sure what the construction timeline is, but based on other sports/organizations, building a new arena/stadium is the time to strike. You kinda have to be good, or on the verge of good leading up to the opening of said arena. And if HCSS isnt working out, then yeah, Coyle and Co cant squander the opportunity to have the unveiling of a dome with a medicorce to bad team. Bringing in a new staff (if that is in the plans) would prob make sense during a year on the road. Said new staff, could take their lumps and have the "we were on the road every game excuse". Just saying. Not turning this into a FIRE HCSS post.
Perhaps, but that is what is required these days to win.We averaged 30 pts a game in 2012 with a senior QB and our top skill position players were all upper classmen and our O-line was better.
To expect the same with a much younger group against a tougher schedule is a very tall order.
I get your overall point but unfair semi-comparison between Cubs fans/Chicago and Orange fans/Syracuse. Edit: Just want to highlight that it only takes a tiny percentage of Chicago's/Cook County's residents to sell-out Wrigley.Disagree entirely. Tell that to Cubs fans, for instance.
For the record, I don't believe anyone on this forum is fair-weather. People don't spend their free time discussing Syracuse football if they're a fair-weather fan. But people who only show up during the good times are unquestionably fair-weather fans.
