If we do not win another game?

We could still make a bowl

Clemson and fsu only teams that we cannot beat.

Then again, it won't happen.

If someone can sit here and objectively say that Shafer has done a good job with this program they should be taken out back and given a Rutgers jersey. I get that we are caught in an emotional vacuum right now but he is NOT getting the job done. I gave him the benefit of the doubt last year with the injuries but he's lost the last three games to teams we were better than. Shafer is our very own Wannstedt. Good recruiter, terrible head coach. He is best served in the role of DC. Plain and simple.
Best post so far.

Agreed. And that's why I think that if there are coaching changes, they need to be made on defense. I think the offense has shown enough improvement, and has enough young talent, that we can compete with people. The defense is what's killing us. If this defense makes a jump, we will be an extremely competitive bowl team, I think. This talented young offense with even a mediocre defense would be 4-3 or 5-2 right now, I don't think there's any question.
You make good sense, Jek, as with most of your posts. My personal wish list is Fuentes and Shafer, if Coyle could swing it. Might take more than a few bucks, but it is MY dream ...and I'm sticking to it.

attendance is down because fans are fickle. we heard for years if the games were more exciting and the offense moved the ball people would come and watch. were the last 4 games not decided in the last few minutes? defense is not way worse, just more inconsistent, which is what happens when you go young. offense is vastly better, we had 2 quick scoring drives last year.. 11 already this year. thats a huge uptick in how we score if this team had come in today 5-1 would more people have been there?

I'm not sure you can call a fan base fickle when over the past 14 years we have had 4 coaches and a record of 59-101.

Yeah. Each season isn't happening in a vacuum. There's a cumulative effect.

It's really easy. Look at the big picture. Not just he Wins and Loses. Look we are Syracuse University, not Alabama. We have a lot of things going against us. We need to have some stability for a few years. If HCSS goes after the season we will have transfers and our recruiting class will get blown up. How many years does that set us back, is it really worth it?
Shafer was kept for stability and here we are. Transfers and recruiting flips are meaningless in the big picture. Need to right the ship.

Sure you can, excepting diehards like the ones who post on the this forum.

Plenty of fair weather disinterest in CNY.

What would be Shafer's 3 best wins?

2013 (Record That Year)
Tulane (7-6)
@NC State (3-9, 0-8)
@ Maryland (7-6)
WFU (4-8, 2-6)
BC (7-6, 4-4)
Minny (8-5)

2014
@Central Mich. (7-6)
@WFU (3-9, 1-7)

2015
Central Michigan (4-4)
WFU (3-5, 1-4)

Take CMU and WFU off the schedule and he actually is GROB.

how do you justify bringing the head coach back when you are 6-18 over two years?
At this point I would just as soon can him so that I can enjoy the discussions on this board again, wins and losses be damned.

You cannot be serious.

To back track but it plays a point. We would be 1 win closer to bowl eligible had we not played LSU.

If we played someone like Tulane, or Amy, or somebody at home go take a look how Rutgers schedules.

Just something that dawned upon me. We don't need to be playing games upcoming seasons in Met-Life against name big time name opponent.

We need easier non conference schedules. Give me 4 gimme non conference wins on the schedule and then all we need is 2 wins in conference. We need to build some consistency by getting bowl eligible then play the bigger name opponents out of conference. I think we beat BC and NC State, and I think we pull one over Louisville but if we don't playing LSU would have cost us at being bowl eligible.

You keep him for a year no matter what happens the rest of the way. I think this is a dumb discussion because he is coming back. a few reasons:

The money

3 years is not enough to build a program, you fire the head coach after 3 years and what type of perception are you sending for future candidates

There will be at least 3 vacancies in the ACC, possibly more that might be more attractive then Cuse. This doesn't include Maryland, Rutgers, West Virginia etc.

There is obvious improvement in the team. The defense is young and will get better. The offense is much better and will continue to improve with experience.

The team believes in each other and in the coaching staff and the games have been competitive. They are comming up short but the pieces are in place for future success. We have much more depth and we are recruiting well.

So that's my opinion

we are probably looking at 4-8 at best, but I don't think coyle can fire shafer. not with dungey on board so far. if next year is 3-4 wins, shafer gone and rightfully so.

hey can you tell me a story about all the awesome football that has been played at the dome in the last 15 years? do the math on our record against BCS/P5 teams, it is pretty damn bad.

Lol...I'm not seeking your validation...FYI. I hate excuses, not just in football, but in everyday life. Everyone has injuries. Everyone plays young guys. Some answer the bell. Others do not.

You'd care about the circumstances of you're firing if it were your job on the line.

AD's don't get the luxury of defining what's an excuse and what's not. If they are good at their jobs they look at every circumstance and try to figure out if a coach can do the job or not.
