Inside Syracuse’s rough off-season: How portal misses and a lack of NIL money led to a lost year

Unlike Fran who had a plan before he came here and knew what he needed and how to get it.
Red has shown nothing in almost 2 years that he has any idea what he is doing.
I give Fran alot of credit but he also just didn’t make it up as he went. He learned on a Natty team in the new era.

One if the dumber things that I think Autry is not doing is learning from the football program. Hopefully this offseason he can get some help.

We have one of the biggest fan bases in the country and plenty of successful, prominent alumni. We need to get better and more creative at fundraising. There is absolutely no reason we should be behind mid major schools when it comes to NIL, regardless of the resources that football demands.
Yup. We have a top 10 fanbase in terms of size. Lots of people with money when we play at the Garden. It's the usual cynical, defeatist excuses that people made for football for years.

If we can't compete with the middle of the Big East for player compensation than we should drop out of the ACC. My goodness.

People said this about football for a decade though. Suddenly we found a guy who shook the tree and made it happen.

SU cranks out 4-5K alumni every year. Lots of wealthy ones exist.

We can't be the SEC but we don't need to be the SEC.
I don’t think it’s a money issue. We have plenty of revenue on the basketball side. I think it’s a we got complacent and we weren’t prepared for the new reality. That occurred at the same time a once great coach was coasting to retirement while he had complete death control over the program. It was a bunch of bad issues at once.

From what we've seen this year, the staff needs truly elite talent to overcome their enormous deficiencies in coaching and player development. I just don't see the team next year being anything more than bubblicious, and even then, only if they absolutely crush it in the portal.
was I the only one thinking Grape or Watermelon bubblicious here?

Did I say mid majors? I said SEC and Bi1G and all the things you said they have and give more.

I’m telling you that’s not on the table competing with them.

Yet you sit here saying we can be more creative with NIL and fundraising.

Totally agree.

I really hope so. I’m not convinced there won’t be rationalizations about an injury, or “that guy committed but he wanted more money!” or that we won 20 and barely missed the tourney so progress.

I fear we’ll be in a Dino-style vortex of excuses for another year if we’re close.
This 100%. The tourney or bust types will move the goalposts. It’s so tiring.

I’m saying we are getting outbid by tiny Big East schools and you made a bunch of excuses. I get the SEC and B1G gap. You can never sell me that we shouldn’t be at the top of the tier below that. Figure it out.

He said we should be in the 20-30 range, which isn't unreasonable when you remove the funding giants of the SEC and B1G.

It's not like we can't compete with Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Purdue.

You think we have a top 10 fanbase yet we are actually #39. Still not bad and we should be better.

I hope you see the problem with this though that the perception is really messed up with our fanbase. There is what’s real and what people here think is entitled to us and it’s just not like that.

We all know we’re in a mess and we deserve better but saying we are something we’re not doesn’t help anything except screwing up peoples expectations.

Where do you get #39?

Then you got 4-5 ACC teams and another 4-5 B12 teams and teams like the Zags. Anyone hear Devo talking about SMU money when he did a game down there?

Just saying the competition adds up quick and those programs are serious about being the best with some of their programs and we’re just pretending still.

AI. What’s source!! lol.
Hah I know. All day long the metrics fly around here to push whatever arguments people are pushing but I ask AI to simply count the # of alumni out there for the top 50 colleges and now it can’t be right haha.

Alumni is different than engaged bball fans.

25 years of being in the ESPN research department.
Isn’t AI writing most of ESPNs articles and doing their BPI now?

I assume whether it’s AI or the research dept they can count alumni.

I know. And how many posts have I read today about our fans not being engaged. Yet we get a Top 10 fanbase comment hah. Gimme a break. Which is it?

That’s not at all how you determine the size of a fan base.

Feel free to not believe me. I’m telling you with absolutely certainty that Syracuse has one of the 10 largest college basketball fan bases in the U.S.

And I’ll ignore your immature and unnecessary snark.

It's not going to bring back the thousands of fans they've lost in the last several years. This is about making money for the University. We absolutely see that it's not about winning. And they have lost a ton of money. Next year could be a bloodbath for the basketball team.
So next year is a failure, regardless of coach, unless we're a top 7 seed?
