It’s Portal time!

I got bad news for you.
Right now we’re sitting on 8 scholarship players once Jimmy announces. 3 guards, 3 forwards and 2 centers. Possibly a 9th if Q comes back.

At this point, 12+ doesn’t seem likely but we absolutely have to add at least 2 more players. It would be asinine to have such few players in this day and age.

Statisticallt s

Statically speaking, it is reported by the NCAA that prior to this year between 30 - 40% of Division 1 men's basketball portal entrants transferred down a division.
If school's lost money or had to cut budgets because of COVID they may elect not to have as many players on scholarship or for their own internal purposes a senior who comes back because of COVID may not count against the NCAA limit but may count against the school's internal accounting limit.
Not everyone is going to find a Division 1 home.
And all this will create a backlog that will impact HS seniors and their ability to find a spot
Your first point has nothing to do with the NCAA dropping the redshirt requirement, which is the discussion we were having. A certain number of players find out they aren't good enough for D1 every year and drop down, that will happen this year too. It would happen whether players had to redshirt to transfer or not.

Your second point about schools having to cut budget also has nothing to do with the redshirt being dropped, but I disagree with that point anyway. I've never heard of a D1 program trying to save money by cutting scholarships from the men's basketball team. Seems like a weird place to go to cut the budget.

The only thing that is going to happen to high school seniors is they are going to have to wait a little while longer while coaches recruit potential transferrs first. There's not going to be a year where tons of D1 quality basketball players get looked over by everyone and are not welcome anywhere.

I think your math is off.

(1) Girard (2) Boeheim (3) Torrence (4) Owens (5) Williams (6) Swider (7) Sidibe (8) Edwards (9) Anselem (10) Boeheim if her transfers here (11) Guerrier if he comes back.

If Q comes back and Jimmy is in, that’s 10 not 9. We’re not done yet...

edit: never mind I double counted Q

As i see the playing rotation for 21/22:

•Joe Girard 6-1 Jr G NY
•Buddy Boeheim 6-6 Sr 2G NY
•Benny Williams 6-8 Fr MD
•Jimmy Boeheim 6-8 Grad NY
•Jesse Edwards 6-11 Jr C Holland

Symir Torrence 6-3 Jr G NY
Cole Swider 6-9 Sr RI
Bourama Sidibe 6-10 Grad C Mali

**I’d love Quadir Copeland to reclass and join the roster as a 4th guard

I don’t think Jimmy starts over Swider. Only way Swider doesn’t start is if Q comes back, imo

His math is correct regarding scholarship players. Sidibe does not count agains the 13 total that a team can have. There is no guarantee that Guerrier returns, Jim Boeheim, Jr come aboard (but Julie alluded that to be true) or that Frank Anselem returns (yet).

Agree with you. I'm not saying I love it, just where I think JB is at. He said it himself this year-He's very loyal to the guys who he feels have produced for him. So much so, that I'd be very surprised if he brings in anyone else (besides Jimmy) to really challenge them for playing time. And before someone says he brought in Swider, he had no choice, he had practically no forwards left. A guy like Symir Torrence was perfect-He didn't have to recruit him and he likely won't challenge the status quo.
I think you're right which is what is so sad in my mind. Not trying to recruit over players and not starting the best player breeds mediocrity. That's where we are now and there is no end in sight.

Sidibe doesn't count towards the 13 CAP.

Meaning, he could be our 14th scholarship player, IF we had that many.
(spoiler - we won't. Unless JB gives a bunch to walk-ons as a reward.)

He most certainly would still be a scholarship player.

One of likely 8-9 recruited scholarship players we'll probably have.
(Chaz Owens is on schollie, but I don't count him as a recruited player)

I can't tell you how happy I would be if Q were to come back but I just don't see it. However, if he does, who would have thought earlier in the season that Q comes back for another year while Griff goes to the NBA?

Losing Frank will be quite disappointing and I just don't see him coming back either with Jesse getting the run he did this year and Sidibe coming back for another. I guess I can always hope.

Griff ain't going to the NBA.

even having his dad as an assistant coach ain't gonna make that happen for him.

ANYBODY can "go pro".
Doesn't mean they'll get a job.

But - AG will likely get opportunities, since he's got physical skills and can shoot it.

Q is a classic tweener, with a PF game in a SF height body.
That doesn't mean he can't make $ hooping, but it'll probably be in Europe.

Chaz Owens is a 6"5" very athletic guy and if you watched his highlights, has significant skills. He is a high intelligence guy who went to very good private schools and has a solid education. He has played basketball with professional players his entire life and is being coached by his father, who is a Syracuse and NBA all-time great who has access to many coaches and mentors for advice and coaching, besides the SU coaching staff.

Same size and similar skillset as Paul Millsap( obviously not at talent level yet). Thus if he can get even see stronger and refine his face up game he has a chance.

Chaz is a nice story and legacy. If he is going to contribute at all it would likely be as an upperclassman. Right now he makes for great depth in practice.

I agree with that. I mean, how many walk-ons have completely come out of nowhere to be real productive players, and how many lower level players are going thru the portal from minor programs to the power 5 programs? Boeheim gets the potential out of players, one way or another or they gone.

Yes, correct. I just meant he's going pro. Maybe in Hungary or Budapest somewhere. I wish him luck though, I really liked the young man. Wish he had a better close to the season and his college career.

obviously won’t get involved but this guy looks like a high major talent
We should def pursue a guard like this. Why does JB just have to settle for Girard as the starting PG and not get the best players he can get? He had a guy in Kadary who was clearly the more skilled, athletic and talented PG, and it seemed like it was trending in the direction that Kadary would be the starter next season. Why not make it a competition?

At this point with the freedom to come and go with the portal it's just not this simple. You bring in a kid who clearly may have a leg up or an expected leg up on Joe and then he decides to move on while time allows him. Some I know would be overly thrilled with that but the likelihood chemistry is impacted is high. It's a nice thought on paper than in practice. The loyalty aspect is seen a two way street more than ever right now with college athletes these days.
