James

I just think JS has been really solid this year. His rebounding and toughness, along with his handle, have improved immensely from last year. He's not a one-dimensional player anymore. Great hustle and athleticism. Right now, based on the last few games, I almost feel better with him out there at the 4 over Fair.

Great game...developing a serviceable handle now also

My regression analysis says it is a waste of time to give James any minutes.

Seriously, living in Minny I get to see Wes play often. Wes had next to no handle in college and it hasn't improved much in the NBA. James's ability to put the ball on the floor is just as good as Wes was and is. He got his pocket picked once from behind tonight, but otherwise the kid had great hustle, a couple blocks, boards, a couple mid-range shots and of course the 3's. Much kudos to the kid for busting his arss and becoming a very important member of the team. Oh by the way, he has more rebounds on the season than Rak or Baye and in about 9 less minutes per game scores about the same as CJ.

Your analysis is bull sheet!!!! Seriously these stats that say this and that when I can watch the game and see something different are dumb. What do I care about regression and starts or NBA potential in the big picture? Seriously James was better than CJ or Kris from what I saw tonight.

I guess my comment wasn't dripping with enough sarcasm. I love James, advanced statistics be damned!

:( Sorry, maybe I had one too many tonight! Oops. I just get all riled up with these stat buffs that say up is down and down is up about stats I've never heard of or cared about. My bad man.

Wes is not a 2g! That dumb ass team in Minny only has pgs and forwards on the roster so half the player are always out of position!

Here's what I love about James' game (advanced metrics not withstanding):

Season total for turnovers: 7

Combine that with the fact that he shoots 55% from the floor and over 40 from 3 and has improved defensively and on the glass and it's pretty easy to figure out why he's become a key player for us.

OK, who was it early in the season that said that JS would be basically bench-ridden once the BE season starts? Not.

I'll admit I was in this boat, I mean who would ever have though JB would ever actually play 10 guys in BE games

James showed some scrappyness today also. A quiet scrappyness atleast. He was getting his hand on the ball when opponents drove a few times, helped alter a shot or two blocked a few, and boxed out for a offensive rebound which he made a tough putback off the glass on.

Saw him Flying out on the three point line in the corners, and he made a excellent high dribble drive pass over his head inside to Melo (which Melo got fouled on the way up on).

He also seems to have a pretty good knack for help defense under the hoop, when Fab/Baye are pulled out of position.

I admit James look better tonight but his point production is still skewed. Most of his points came when we were tacking it on and it wasn't a real close game.

He needs to show up when the game is close and not just in garbage time.

I agree, JS leaves a lot to be desired. Most of his big games have come against weaker competition, so it would be nice to see him consistently put up double digits against tougher competition. But for the most part, his floor game has been head and shoulders above what it was in the past. He has the possibility to be a great player for us next year, maybe even all BE type of performer.

Where I have seen JS progress this year, is when he would come in and miss his first 3, he was toast for the whole game. Now he can miss the first and still feel confident like he did tonite and have a nice game.

His first basket came when it was a tie game. His next basket pushed it to a 1o point lead. It was never under 10 for the rest of the game. What was he supposed to do? Let them score more so his baskets had more meaning for you?

James is the best shooter on the #1 team in America. He is averaging 8.3 pts total and 7.6 pts in league play off the bench for the #1 team in the country. He has fewer TO's per minute played than CJ or KJ. He has more points and steals per minutes played than CJ or KJ. He has more reb's per minutes played than KJ and basically the exact same as CJ.

Yeah, he leaves a lot to be desired.

By the way, that was an amazing catch by Melo. The guy has great hands. I want him to stop slapping at rebounds though.

It's deceiving to compare production per minute between James and the two guys leading our team in minutes.

Matt Tomaszewski does a lot of damage over 2.1 minutes, maybe we should start comparing him to Kris & CJ.

I'll not a believer yet, I still think he's an empty calories guy. Once he has a quality game against a quality time, I'll give him a break.

I have been a fan of James Southerland from the first video I posted of him from high school. I rememeber a quote that said he shoots it like Kobe Bryant. My wife got hooked on him during freshman year when he made all those three's at Midnight Madness, that was sick. She is still his biggest fan.

Then after a summer workout which Tailgate Ivan attended came this, "James Southerland is the most athletic kid on this team (that included Wes Johnson) some of the dunks he made were incredible. He's going to be a very good player down the road." I posted that comment on the board and most scoffed.

James was recruited as a project because of his great shooting ability and athletism. His main problems were he was weak, scrawny and his ball handling skills were raw. Southerland is that Jim Boeheim recruit who is flys under the radar and who JB projects for greater things. Like Howard Triche who didn't play much until his junior year, James is being rewarded for being a good soldier and working hard every day. He has filled out some and has improved his handle, defense and rebounding. His shot has always been there.

Looks like Adrian Autry is having a good influence on James!

From my "Game Quotes"

James Southerland

His relationship with Autry, Southerland said, has lifted his spirits.

“He’s a cool guy, a great guy,” Southerland said. “I feel like he sees a lot of talent in me, a lot of potential. And it’s basically staying focused and doing what I need to do mentally.”

“Syracuse is a program,” he said, “where everybody is going to get their shot. I’ve never seen anybody come in here and not get a chance to show what they can do. We’re all good players. The game is simple. It’s just staying focused and playing your best.”

Your view of the games must have been skewed (or you did not watch any of them).

Strange how some feel the need to find a way to discount Southerlands contibutions. Kris hurt us way more than he helped us last night. James helped us way more than any of the other forwards last night. He has had some very timely big shots when games were still in question of late. Marq and Prov games when things tightened up late in the second halves he his 3 bombs to give us space and deflate these teams a bit. How about his rediculous shooting against NCST in our first true road game. Congrates to James for playing very well this season expanding his complete game and building his self confidence to the point were misses don't distract him and he is no longer afraid to use the bounce when he has the lane.

Next season we will see better production out of the forward possitions because James and CJ will see more time. I know thats is an opinion but to me it seems set in stone. Both will be better players than they are this year and James is already a better shooter than Kris which is mainly what Kris's role has been this season. Add a much improved Christmas and Grant as the 4th guy and we will be superior at the 3/4 possitions next season IMO.

The Hall of Fame coach, considers Dion, CJ and James "starters" and praised what a good shooter James is last night. Multiple BE coaches, including Jay Wright last night have stated Southerland could start for the #1 team in the country and virtually every Big East team.

Last year he had 12 vs ND, 8 vs Pitt, 9 vs G'town, 7 vs Marquette. This year he has had 11 vs NC State, 8 vs Seton Hall (currently #2 team in BE) and 15 vs Nova (down this year but a rival that has kicked out butts in recent years). Unless you believe all these teams blow it might be time to give him that break.
