Jay Wright Retiring

NIL still needs guardrails and regulations that keep the playing field more level. Everyone wants the NCAA to create a system that makes sense for all, but they don’t have the courage or appetite to do it and are hoping Congress can create those guardrails. You can’t have unfair recruiting advantages become an inherent and sanctioned part of the system (as for bad actors who operate outside the system, that’s what the regulations and punishments are for). Even those that benefit from the current system, like Nick Saban, don’t support a Wild West NIL where anything goes.
Right now I don't think they have the most important thing they would need, the permission from the schools to do it. They can only create rules, etc., for things that the member schools allow them to regulate. It's hard for me to imagine how the SEC (and a bunch of others) would let the NCAA to put limits, equalize the outcomes, etc., etc., of NIL when they believe NIL is their edge over the others.

Sounds like he knew he couldn't give coaching as much as he used to and didn't think that was fair to anyone around him. Pretty respectable.

This is certainly a surprise, but more surprisingly is they were able to keep it quiet and not leaked it for so long.

After reading a few reports and interviews, it is clear that Jay Wright didn't just decided this week to retire. It's been known for some time. Someone posted his final presser where he referred to being there "...one last time", Neptune didn't just get a call on Monday and decided to take over immediately, they had everything lined up already.

Villanova athletic director Mark Jackson said in a release. “After meeting with several exceptional candidates, we found all those attributes and more in Kyle Neptune. Kyle quickly stood out for his basketball knowledge, recruiting savvy and natural ability to connect with student-athletes and coaches.”

So they spoke to multiple candidates who all kept quiet. Neptune had to inform Fordham about this and Fordham kept quiet.

That's a lot of people keeping their mouths shut!!!
My guess ...and it's just that...conjecture based on the way we've seen this play out in the last few days...is that Jay Wright wisely didn't want to rain on K's parade.

All year K's departure has been the story.
It would have looked petty at best had Jay Wright announced this was his last season, too.
He apparently didn't want all the ballyhoo.
But he's known for quite a while.

Besides the coach and family the only people who likely knew were Villanova's AD and President.
That's how they could keep it quiet.

Kyle Neptune...likely JW's suggested successor...was contacted as soon as possible and told he was likely choice. A few others may have been contacted under the condition that they sign non-disclosure agreements. As soon as they had Neptune on board JW made his announcement.

The really hard part seems to have been getting everyone in the know at Fordham to remain silent.
Plus, we can only wonder what recruits - including one five star - were told.

Going to be interesting on Neptune's success at Nova.
See how many players leave the program.
Does Neptune bring in new assistants or does the program stay somewhat intact
after Wright's leaving.
Neptune was successful at Fordham...a program that was 31-71 in the 4 seasons prior to Neptune's
team going .500.
And compare this to JB's departure when that happens...

Part of the transition is the assistant coaches are staying.

Lakers
"Oh, he left college to go to the NBA." Did anyone ever consider the idea that's he's had enough of coaching at any level? The various networks that have college b-ball are all going to be at his doorstep with fat checkbooks. He'll get to go home most nights. The biggest plus of retiring for him in my mind, he doesn't have to deal with the inflated egos of the players, which would be several times worse with the prima donnas of the NBA.

going out at the top of your game. always admirable. nobody enjoys watching the slow slide to irrelevance.

That's already A LOT of people.

Jay Wright and family
Villanova AD and president
HC candidates
Fordham

even that is difficult to keep quiet because Fordham has to go into a huddle and figure out what their steps are to find a replacement without breaking the news before it is announced publicly.

the other coaching candidates who didn't get the offer may not be so inclined to keep quiet, their respective families may have to be on the decision as well.

Neptune's family, but also his attorney have to had reviewed his offer terms before Neptune can accept formally. That attorney has staff working on papers...

Villanova president and AD wouldn't be the ones to physically put together the contract, they dictated the terms, but the actual contract was put together by another attorney and staff.

I would assume Jay W cares about his current assistants, and wouldn't want them to find out he is retiring from ESPN and wanted to assure them their positions are secured with the new HC, or the new HC would have approached them as well to make sure they know he wanted them to stay on, and these assistants families.

Not sure about recruits or current players, may be they were kept in the dark all along.

That' still a lot of people in the loop, not in the loop at the same time, but progressively more and more brought into the loop.

Huh? Wright hasn’t decided before the season that he wanted to retire. He said he only began to really realize it during the season and for sure just after the regular season ended. He only told the Nova AD just before the Big East tourney of his decision. So those who found out after the season only needed to keep it quiet for the past few weeks after the Final Four. Not sure that is the case. Have a look at the whole career and think about the “don’t even compete” comment. Lots of 1st round exits mixed in with the deep runs.

5 losing seasons, 5 1st round exits, 5 more second round exits.

2 titles better than 1 and nova much better as of late but the whole career comes into play.

Disagree with “don’t even compete”

Cuse!

He's so edgy with that take though. The addition of the absolute "JB don't compete" probably means he's more fertile than all of us and has big muscles too.

Read the OP this morning as "Jay Wright Returning"
