JB on ESPN2 talking Red

Starling's scoring average suffered because he was asked to do a lot more last year, when we didn't have a true PG. Last season he was on the floor for 35 min/game (vs. 29 this year), and attempted more FGs (12.8 vs 10.9) and FTs. His shooting average actually went up slightly this season (.419 vs .407).

I don't think it is fair to pin this year's woes on Starling's play; there is enough blame to go around.

Most of us actually don’t have the opportunity to spout our nonsense to the world though. Just this motley crew.

And…most of us actually concede we don’t know everything, unlike JAB.

How dare he!

We have had different “star players” the past three seasons and none of them made the tourney. There was one common denominator.

Some of y’all have Boeheim Derangement Syndrome. I listened to his full interview. As usual, his comments were fair and truthful.

I think their beef is that he’s saying it publicly.. I guess? As if that matters.

He’s saying things that have been said here, even by the people criticizing him. Did JJ and Donnie underperform? Yup, sure did. Is that on them and on Autry? Yup, which is what JB said. Is SU’s NIL lacking for the ‘elite’ program we’re supposed to be? Yes, it is. For somebody to assume these comments are hurting the program, they would have to have a warped understanding of the perception of our program outside our Syracuse bubble.

It’s absurd, imo, to tell a man he can’t go talk about what he wants to talk about. He’d get these interviews regardless of his made-up job at the school. That job is of no consequence in any of this. Saying he has to shut up or somebody needs to shut him up is crazy disrespectful.

Not taking the interviews is not a reasonable option and answering diplomatically is not necessary/useful. He’s saying what he feels and it’s at least grounded in truth; it’s not bonkers off-the-wall stuff. Red is a friend and viewers are going to understand that. He’s not going to say “yeah Red’s dogcrap and should go live his life in disgrace.” And he’s not going to say nothing, and is under no obligation to say nothing.

Like I said throughout the year. The players deserve some criticism and accountability. Yes coaching has something to do with it, but George, Starling and Donnie (for some games) stunk it up. Bad bad. The turnovers are on players and there were tons of them. I don’t see one thing wrong with what JB said

Best post ever. This has turned into a "Bash the 2nd winningest coach in college basketball history" thread.

I think it's the truth and lots of people don't like the truth. People want to believe we have great NIL and everything is golden we have the Dome, remember Pearl. It was all just this Red Autry guy. The truth is Red didn't get enough out of many of these kids and also there were issues with the resources too. Both things can be true.

A lot of mailing it in between those 3.

Well, this is one opinion.
If it's true, then it's Alex Kline's fault?
But, who recruits, trains, and... coaches the players? The pope?

Also, players are supposed to get better on their own. Thats just a known thing. This hand holding thing that development is purely on the coach is outrageous. And these guys were not going above and beyond to get better. I played high level division 1 sport and not once did I blame my coach for not preparing me or anything like that, it was on me. And if I played poorly, I owned up to it and worked my butt off to prevent it for the future

Well, I'm glad Jim is still OK with driving a wedge into the fanbase. Must be that golf background.

The fanbase hasn’t been united since the Obama administration lol. The wedge would just fall through a canyon.

Agreed. I defer to coaching being the much bigger issue since we saw 3 different teams have the same issues, but players take some of the responsibility.

I don’t like seeing ESPN headlines that cast ‘Cuse in a negative light, but that’s what they signed up for. They are pros getting paid big dollars at a big name school. The media critics (which includes JB now) comes with that.

Who picks the players? One of the jobs of the head coach is player evaluation. Publicly bashing our NIL and players is a bad look.

So what. Those players aka Donnie freeman was 15th best recruit and NG was a top 20 transfer. Starling McDonald’s AA. Cant say they picked wrong. People act like they took transfers from OCC. The guys just stink.

Red has known JJ since he was a kid and he doubled down on him for three seasons. Did he miss something?

Semi pro players don't get the level of "protect the kids feelings" as the unpaid past players in my eyes. People making a million dollars and underperforming can be called out.
not the kids. the program. Publicly badmouthing your employer and employees is a terrible look. Jim can get to steppin' too. If I told a potential client that yeah, that last one wasn't great, but it wasn't my fault, it was my project team and the company failed me, I would be fired before I got back to the hotel.
