JJ's FT Shooting Form

Ok, JJ’s been pkaying bb for a long time right?
Is there any footage of him in high school shooting jerky free throws? Has he always had it or just at SU?
I have seen him shoot a short range jumper and it looked fine.
Can a player make a free throw anyway he/she wants? Like shooting a jump shot from the line?
Scratching my head.
You can take a jump shot as long as you don't cross the line.

Anyone know if he shoots them like that in practice?
I would guess it's similar to golf. You go to the driving range and you hit 100 golf balls. No matter your skill level, you are going to get into a groove. A very good player might hit 90+ shots that he feels good about. A high handicap golfer (aka Duffer) is going to hit less, but still more than his percentage when he steps onto the tee box.

JJ is a Duffer on the FT line. He just needs to find his routine (bounce the ball twice, take a deep breath, bend your knees and shoot) and stop thinking about a million things.

I'm leaning that it's more mental than physical, but his form is not good, but hopefully would be able to be fixed. Fixing the mental part, might take a much longer time frame.

Yes he does. I actually feel really bad for him. It started early this summer. I shared in other threads that I was called to help him with the yips because that’s what this is. I gave him and the coaches tons of info on how to cure them (that’s what I do for a job) and the biggest thing was trying to change his routine leading up to the shot. He had a very tough time changing that and couldn’t break it even though results weren’t changing. This has nothing to do with form, his form is being affected by his mindset and his routine. Any golfer that has had the yips knows this very well. Once it is in your system it’s very tough to get out. And that’s where it is right now unfortunately
Good insight. The crazy thing too was that he had drained a really nice 3 that looked great so if he just sat the rest out we wouldn't even be discussing today. Once the game slows down for him and really Kiyan too and the guys they fell apart.

Because Monmouth already had a ton of guys in foul trouble.
I turned the game off thinking it would be a blowout and all of their guys would ride the bench.

How we didn't COACH our way to that is beyond me.

With 27 PF's - and guys at 4+ by end of game - we looked like a discombobulated ball of stupid.

Is it possible to use hypnosis to help ?

I had not caught your previous mentions of this and am happy that you shared this info. This makes me so sad for JJ. Watching those FTs last night, I was convinced that he had some sort of undisclosed additional injury that he was trying to fight through. That it's all mental just makes it so much harder to watch. Really hope he has a breakthrough and can shake off the anxiety.

just have him shoot left handed. almost impossible to yip I bet more have a chance to go in.
Not sure if you caught this, but Adam Schenk won this past week's PGA Tour event by putting one handed (right hand low). Needless to say, he couldn't have "schenked" very many of his putts.

Not in all years of doing this and all the research and experience I’ve had with this does it show it will help. Hard part is you need a fresh start and what I mean by that is a very very long break from it. However, the kid works his butt off everyday in the gym trying to get better and work himself out of it, but that’s not how you can approach this.

I did. This is a big topic in our world about teaching. And in that article there’s a big line “can you do this in front of people”. Thats where a lot of anxiety is created and why people are afraid to do what is best for them and especially in JJs case, a huge Dome crowd. He should be shooting them as jump shots from constant dribbling. Hes not good from a static position

JJ has always struggled with shooting, so there must be some kind of mechanical flaw.

But seeing those free throws last night... I have to ask the question, is he impaired? Is he dealing with some kind of shoulder [or whatever] injury that hasn't been disclosed, that might account for TWO airballs?
He didn’t struggle in high school with shooting. He was a good 3-point shooter. This is a college thing. See above for Bulldog’s comments on his free throw shooting.

I’ll add that he attacks the rim and doesn’t get assists either which is an anomaly. I mean, I was fine with JJ getting a good deal of minutes when his FT’s were just eh, but if they are horrid that’s another story. And if his FT form is that bad, I don’t see how it doesn’t translate to even worse jump shooting efficiency than past seasons. Then again he was 1 for 1 on 3’s tonight so maybe that will be some other crazy anomaly with him. Let’s hope so.

I really don’t know what happened last night - he missed a drive to the right which he always finishes with his right hand - how he drilled that three without hitting the rim?

I’m pretty sure Kash Patel is looking into the officials texts, calls and emails - can’t tell if we are back to our low energy defense or the officials would not allow us to play defense

And that's what's crazy. It wasn't a huge Dome crowd, but it was still a home game, shooting into the friendly student section. Not a raucous ACC road game where you have people screaming all kinds of things at you. I can already picture the Cameron Crazies yelling "Airball" at JJ as he is into his pre-shot routine.

Because he is static and not moving. If you look at that 3 he made last night in the corner, that was such a hard shot, but he was constantly moving to get into a motion and it was so pure. The isolation of the free throw of “just standing there” has really gotten in his head unfortunately. He also wasn’t picking a “target” on the rim as well. He basically was seeing the backboard and rim as one giant target, so it’s really easy to miss shots that way. Tried to change what he looks at and how he “gets into the shot”, but his anxiety is winning right now and that’s how this goes at times

Maybe he should start his free throws by dribbling down the court from the other free throw line and then pull up at the line for a regular jump shot. Kinda like a penalty shot in hockey. :) One of our guys on the line can even wave their hands in his face to replicate the defense to force him to not think about anything.

You see a lot of golfers chip one handed now as well. It’s all about triggering the brain to think “something different” is happening
I know what you've been saying here - for the last 2 years leading up to this year, if I was within 20 yards of the green, I KNEW my shot was going directly right, off the hosel. Everyone I played with knew as well, and never stood on that side. Then you think about it every time and almost will it into happening. The most frustrating two years of golf in my life. Finally fixed it this year by trying some of the most unorthodox things. I actually moved closer to the ball, forced my stance to be much more upright, as well as the club being much more upright. Not that anyone cares. But it's amazing what the mind can do when you give it too much time.

I'm scared to press rewind. Not sure if I can take watching it again. Burn the disc, break into Hulu and ruin the dvr server for this game, have to do what it takes so no one can ever see this game again.

I'm kidding mostly about JJ and am a big fan of him and the team, but this game was not a basketball game. Closer to a Chuck Knoblauch pitching at his yip pinnacle in a Yankee old timers softball game.
Add to that. The officials were told before the game that they were calling a high school girls field hockey game. They were also given the heads up that Sadiq White hits the opposing girls stick a lot.

The problem is, who do you sub for him late in games? Kiyan isn’t much better.
This is silly. Not sure if you are serious. Kiyan may have missed some foul shots but they are all pure looking. Form is impeccable. He will hit them. To compare Kiyan missing foul shots to Starling missing foul shots is pure craziness
