John Gillon

Give the kid credit. He took advantage of how NC State plays defense, which is poorly. He has played well two games in a row, including closing the games with clutch free throws. I'm happy for him that he's tasting some success.

That said, neither Florida St. nor NC State ever adjusted to take make him do what he doesn't do well. NC State almost did two or three times, but then they bailed him out with fouls.

The best defense they played on him tonight was when they made him drive with little time on the shot clock two possessions in a row. He couldn't make shots (wild shots at that) either time, and we turned it over on shot-clock violations. That should have been a clue for how to defend him from then on, but apparently it wasn't.

Thank goodness.

To be fair, on one of those plays Howard gave the ball to Gillon with like 5 on the clock after doing nothing with it for the previous 15.

Agreed, which played right into what a defense should want us to do as much as possible.

Gillon has shown he isn't able to consistently create his own scoring on drives. Defenses should be putting him into that situation as much as they possibly can. Not forcing him to have to create his own scoring off the bounce is bad defensive strategy.

I'm happy that Hamilton and Gottfried never figured that out.

He was incredible tonight.

Best of all, he seems to have figured out what to do when he gets into the lane. Smith was impressive, and really got out on him today, but couldn't keep up with Gillon--which is quite surprising. Earlier in the season, Gillon would drive and then try to put up a circus shot that had low chance of going in. Now, he's drawing contact and getting to the line. He's also averaged 10 assists in addition to the scoring the past two games, he isn't just getting it done as a scorer.

Needs to keep it up--we are a completely different team with a point guard who makes things happen.

He doesn't have to make shots under the rim as long as he can draw fouls while driving and ice the freebies, which he does. all he needs is a little floater.

Kid has some Flynn in him - small in stature but heart of a lion

It's weird - when he really gets into a groove it seems like he starts dribbling like a Flynn. Just for short stretches, but he looks really dynamic with the ball and creative. Then, at other times (most times), seems like he's just pounding it until he can go on a straight line drive.

The beauty of this is that the . . . . . NC State kid who made the three (Rowan ?) was shooting arrows at the SU bench all night when he made shots.

Suck it tool. You lose.

Noticed that too - I thought when they got up 13 to 16, he and Smith, both started going for style points a little too much. They weren't turning it over, just seemed to be more concerned with themselves and how awesome they were than putting the game away....

What should he have done? White walked up right beside him with a defender, nobody else was moving and he took the best shot he could have with the spacing he had. Watch the play again.
He could have tried to get an open shot. For himself or for a teammate. Clearly, he was going to dribble out the clock and launch it, no matter what, no matter where. Turned out to be a good choice but if it hadn't gone in, there'd be plenty of room for 2nd guessing.

Better defenses don't commit as many of those fouls. :noidea:

Flocking idiot. It's not over till it's over sister.

Incredible effort from John tonight. But, going forward, he needs help from teammates in addition to White. When John drives, he sometimes will have few options -- a closely guarded Lydon, or Roberson who usually isn't much of an offensive threat.

Go Gillon go! Obviously this W gives them confidence that they can get it done on the road too, and roar back from double digits in the hole.
