Kyle McCord: Drafted by Eagles / Rd 6 Pk 181

Hurts remains under-rated. The guy is just a grinder and always studies to get better. He's especially worked on cutting down on turnovers and has succeeded. He's succeeded, I might point out, with literally a different offensive coordinator every year.

He's especially underappreciated for his ability to read defenses and successfully change plays at the LOS.

Plus, love or hate the Tush Push, Hurts has turned his body into the effective weapon that makes that play work.
Sounds to me a lot like a guy that's good... but not great.

Good enough to win a Super Bowl. Better QB than, say, Eli Manning, who Jints' fans say should already be in the Hall of Fame.
He’s been to 2 of the last 3 super bowls. Yet he’s “good”. What you gonna do? First Take has taken over fandom

Uh, the only thing Hurts is better at than Eli, is running.
And yeah - he’s really good at that.

But that hardly makes him a better QB.
Otherwise Tim Tebow would be the GOAT, and not Tom Brady.

Speaking of Brady, what’s his record against Eli in Super Bowls?

You might want to check his TD/Int ratio...plus:

Career QB Rating: Eli: 84.1; Jalen: 93.5

Avg/Pass: Eli: 7.0; Jalen: 7.6

Rushing TD's: Eli: 7; Jalen: 55

I grant you that Eli had a long career and has some excellent stats. But I've argued that Jalen is underrated. His career path is at least on a par with Eli's, if not superior.

And he DID put the team on his back in his first Super Bowl appearance.

The Hurts slander is… unexpected to say the least. What is this good not great shenanigans - what does that even mean & who cares?! He’s been in 2 of the last 3 Super Bowls, the Eagles DOMINATED the Chiefs & Mahomes. Hurts is 26 years old people, Super Bowl champ. stop it.

That's not much of an argument to me. I'm not a jint fan. Lot's of good but not great QBs have won Superbowls.

I laid out the case more completely in a subsequent post.
The one comparing his more closely to Eli? That's not all that convincing to me. I see Eli as another good but not great QB. Even his teams that won the Superbowl were good but not great that got hot at the right time, which has also happened to other Superbowl winners as well as other winners of single elimination format tournaments.

We're not going to agree on this, which is fine.

This is my last post on this subject. Back to regularly scheduled Kyle McCord programming.

Am I alone in being dumbfounded how one of our best QB's ever, who had one of the best seasons statistically in ACC history, couldn't get drafted until the 6th round? I get the NFL is enamored with athletic QBs, but come on.

FIFY.

Every NFL team drafted
/ checks notes
// seventeen DL this draft.

(Only slight hyperbole)

Meanwhile - a team like the Steelers, who literally did NOT have a QB,
grabbed two completely questionable dudes.

< shurug emoji >

QB is only THE most important position in all of sports.

Nah, let’s go bargain hunting in the 6th round!!

I tend to think they drafted *knowing* they were either singing Rodgers or trading for Cousins. So building other spots was more of a priority. I would have preferred Kyle 100% over Howard, but they may have had a similar grade on them and decided they would get one or the other in the 6th.

The Browns could pick a punter in the 1st round and I wouldn't be shocked. But the Steelers are actually a competent organization so their strategy surprised me.

6th round seems late but football is littered with guys who have had huge statistical years/careers that weren't drafted high, if at all. A generation ago, he goes higher, but now mobility isn't just viewed as a nice addition, it's used as a weapon.

This whole draft is so ironic.
How many times has this board discussed who is the best QB from Syracuse - McNabb (who I peg 1) or McCord (who I peg 3 to Donnie Mac)

Now we have a NFL perspective.
McNabb was drafted second by the Eagles and became a multi year star as a starter.
McCord was drafted in the sixth round by those same Eagles.

McCord was great for us - no ifs, ands or buts.
And I will cheer for him when and if he plays for the Eagles.
But despite what the fans said - he was not a QB good enough for the first 3 rounds.
He should have gone 4th round - Pitt will rue the day they decided to play the waiting game.
And all this screaming about Shedeur Sanders - Kyle was a better all around player than him.
Your arm and legs are not the only things that are important - what is between the ears is also important.
That is why I envision a long career for Kyle - whether as a starter or a backup.
He will grab everything he can from the experience and leave the locker room in a better shape than when he first arrived.

As for Jalen Hurts, I dont know enough about him to compare to others.
I kind of left the Eagles after McNabb and Reid left.
I follow the Chiefs and Bills a bit but that is it.
I will follow McCord wherever he plays.
I just think barring an injury it wont be with the Eagles.
They will develop him and trade him elsewhere is my guess. But they will develop him, he wont be forgotten.

Teams are no longer willing to mortgage their future (out year draft picks) to move up to get a player who won't be an immediate contributor and may be considered a project.

The only teams Kyle could have gone to with a chance to play are bad teams that would have lost their QB to injury. That likely would not go well for him. Now he can learn the league knowing if he does have to play he will be surrounded by the best team in the league. Tanner McKee and DTR don't sound like daunting competition for the #2 job that Kyle should target for this season. Hurts has missed a couple games 3 of his 4 seasons and is very physical so real PT isn't that far away.
