The first time I felt like I had a window into McCord's personality as a football player and leader was while I was watching the ACC documentary that aired during Fall camp. There was a that clip showed McCord and a few of the receivers after practice working on end zone routes. After McCord threw a pass he yelled to the receiver something like- finish the rep, always finish the rep. McCord's body language changed when he yelled that and his tone was strong if not a bit peeved. I had already been very excited about McCord being QB1 for the Cuse, and after that I could hardly wait until the first game. I also made plans to see the Georgia Tech game in the Dome.
Another Fall camp moment that was different (there were many) was when the ACC Network Fall camp roadshow stopped by the Cuse camp. They had JB on to talk football, and JB is widely known to enjoy football. And JB said something like- Kyle McCord may not be good enough for Ohio State, but he is definitely good enough for Syracuse. And then JB showed a lot of excitement about what he was seeing with this Cuse team. The ACC crew laughed and smiled about McCord, but at that time the ACC media had McCord ranked something like the 9th best QB in the league so I don't think JB's comments made much of an impression on them other than JB being a homer for Cuse football. Well, make no mistake JB knows ball both on the hardwood and on the gridiron.
The criticism of McCord from Ohio State fans was always overblown, and I think the past two seasons have exposed how unhinged some of that fan base can be. Unfortunately those unhinged OSU fans are the loudest among that fan base. They were so loud apparently that they shaped the preseason minds of the media around the ACC. And all the while Kyle McCord never changed, stayed focused, and led this Cuse team. McCord always seems to say the right thing and it feels very authentic and it must be because his actions are always golden too. I think Coach Fran said in an interview or in the ACC documentary that in his first meetings with McCord as the SU QB his main goal was to get McCord to relax and have fun again. McCord didn't have to call coach sir or something along those lines. Coach Fran knocked it out of the park. We all saw McCord blossom in many ways, and I think he not only gave us all a lot of joy this season but he had a lot of joy himself too.
A couple of other preseason highlights that stood out among many was the way this team embraced community service. I saw a lot of pics and some footage of guys doing community service in the snow clearing trash from sidewalks, going door-to-door to speak with residents, visiting hospitals etc. The players always seemed grounded, present, and humble being of service. And being of service brings that out so seeing that I felt for sure that they were invested. The other thing is that during the Spring Semester, coach Fran's first semester on campus, the football team reportedly had the highest team GPA ever. In my eyes that was no small feat, and I think that collective attention to detail showed up on the gridiron too.
Go Cuse !!
