Lack of athleticism

By his senior year, Champagnie was ranked No. 111 nationally and No. 3 in New York, according to 247sports. His college offers included Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Dayton, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Temple and VCU. Frazier said Champagnie was heartbroken that Syracuse didn’t offer him
Wasnt skinny enough for JB

We make excuses that North Carolina weighs more down low.

Or Pitt moves the ball too well.

It comes down to talent then coaching.

In the late 1980s and early 2000s, we had strong recruiting classes and were Elite 8/Top 15 solidly.

Now we have posts about being 73-87 and a defensive performance that yield 3.1 points per minute in a half against a decent but not great team.

Athleticism is a misnomer. Jesse Edward’s is athletic. We need ballers. And better coaching.
Jesse is not athletic, he is a 7 fter who is not strong, explosive or quick. Otherwise he would be able to record a rebound when a gets in the game.

Our PF is pretty good too though. So is our other PF.

Question is, would this kid play a better C than Marek?

If we’re going to play PF’s at Center, they need to have a little muscle to them. Or be able to jump through the roof.
i say play your 3 most capable rebounders at some point, QB, Bobby, Woody

It’s amazing how much I see from JB how much he says “he’s not ready” or some stuff like that. Why on earth is JB not putting these kids in situations TO BE ready. Every game he doesn’t want to experiment ever BC he would rather not lose the game instead of taking a chance to win the game. I played a D1 sport at a high level. My coach took care of me with everything to put me in a spot to succeed and it made me a better player. JB puts so much accountability on these kids and yet none on himself. Give the kids a plan, create better plays, make them look better. Try it please
I dont believe JB has ever truly developed a player. He was very fortunate to ride the big east. / Dome wave and to have some excellent recruiters on his staff.
Jim is a good coach of talent although many will say he underperformed given the talent. The Zone was stifling when it was new, 3pt shooters were new and we had talent.
At this point we are a shadow of what we used to be. Pick any SU team between 1990 and 2010 and they would destroy this team.

The answer is YES.

I’d give JB developing Elijah Hughes as well.
I had no expectations for him and JB was able to develop him into a draft pick.

A lot of players regress here and I don’t think player development is great but I am crush JB. He needs to be able to hear deserved criticism.

Ok, I’m frustrated and concerned, but let’s not revise history that no player has ever been developed. The Rony Seikaly exhibit alone smashes that statement.

There are plenty of examples. Some of this stuff is such nonsense, but that's the same fatalistic posting style he has on the football board.

Hakim got here as a makeup recruit and got a long NBA career. Ethan, heck Wallace was shooting 3s by the end. Rautins got NBA money! We can go on and on.
Not to mention that JB got more out of a bunch of guys than any NBA coach was able to wring out of them. DC being the shining example, and there are others (Pearl, Sherm, Dion, Wes, etc).

I have said relentlessly that if JB had the talent Coach K has had at Duke while we have been in the ACC he would have won more.
JB knows how to use talent when he has it.
The problem is we haven’t had that talent.

Where does Benny get minutes next year? Are we really thinking Q goes pro? I’m not seeing that. I don’t think he has the lift/explosiveness for the NBA.

And if he does bolt, is Benny a 4? We would be even softer inside than this year.

“Sux” to be thinking about next year already. but... And with Kadary having to ride pine behind upperclassmen regardless of talent/potential, does Benny leapfrog Braswell and Woody?

Just looking, desperately, for a reason to be optimistic.
Benny is better than anyone currently getting time.

I watched Auburn v Kentucky, the difference in athleticism was scary
I watch a ton of A10 hoops and we’re not as athletic as half of the teams in the league

I remember Dean talking about the Champagnie twins on his podcast as possible recruits to pursue after we lost out on a couple of guys. And there was some talk about SU looking at him, but we never ended up offering.

I mean not for nothing I heard like 10 people say how underrated jba was and how he was going to to be great here.

Yeah for sure, people saw the Nova offer and assumed he would be great immediately.

In fairness he hasn’t really had a long enough rope & despite that, I’ve seen some flashes.
JB says he’s “not ready” blah blah blah, but maybe that’s just for this system. He’s a natural PF & much like Marek, he’s been asked to play the 5 and isn’t strong enough to pull it off.
So because he hasn’t picked up on the nuances of the 2-3, he sits and wilts on the bench while our 165lb wanna-be center gets abused...repeatedly. -Sigh-

Yeah I don't want to give up on him yet and some people did say he would take a while to develop, but our player development has become so-so over the past several years

Exactly. Our major issues are we don't have an ACC caliber center and we've had very inconsistent PG play. If Champagnie is on SU I don't think our record is that much better.
