Last Jedi Discussion (WITH SPOILERS)

I was disappointed as well. Like Cuseregular noted, nobody clapped at the end of the viewing I saw as well. A 10:30 start, many were hootin' and hollerin' and jazzed up in the beginning but the theater was pretty silent for the entire movie. Nothing shocked, amazed, thrilled, disgusted, or delighted the crowd. Even the forced comedic relief barely drew a few giggles.

Biggest disappointment was Luke, like others had said, there were a million avenues to take his story and his amounted to very little. Apparently he died when I blinked, not sure how you kill off your franchise QB in such a subtle manner. I would've much rather seen him somehow killed off by Kylo, at least then I would be more convinced of Kylo's power.

The story was just weak.
I mean I love Star Wars and will see them all but this movie wasn’t good IMO.
It’s okay because I still like the franchise but it really doesn’t make sense the story of this trilogy.
Each trilogy made sense and it’s hard to see how they end this one.

I enjoyed it and was entertained, but I didn't think it was anything special and there were a lot of logic flaws that bothered me a ton. Pretty much everything that happened on the salt planet was a joke.

Hope you guys are right as it would leave more to work with for ix and the arc of the story but in reading a lot online I think it's a done deal. Just like the kid at the end anyone now can be a Jedi or of the force. Think her parents were as ren noted, unfortunately.
I loved it.

Snoke was a random character and the plot is a little all over the place but this was a great effort and setup. There’s no way Rey’s parents were nobodies. The WHOLE story is about Skywalkers and now episode 9 won’t be? Don’t believe it.

Man didn't even notice that with vaders light saber thing, nor did I notice the kid at the end had the force within as he apparently levitated the broom to himself which I missed.

So yeah looks like they're setting up for the future with anyone potentially having the force within (not just Jedi), and think this is how Rey is infused with it too. Why so strong is the question so hopefully there's more to it along the lines of what you're thinking and not just that any tom Dick or Harry can have the force by will (which if so might explain her connection to Kylo ren as like with Lea gravitating in space and Luke force projecting/shape shifting to another location, apparently these are powers of the force never revealed in any earlier movie).

Regardless of note, this was the first time I've seen a Star Wars movie where no one clapped at the end, and it's taking me a longer while to process everything, but, again, here's hoping JJ Abrams with IX wraps things up well.
The prevailing theory on force “power” is that it’s spread amongst those using it, so the fewer users means it’s more powerful.

Well it will be no matter who Rey is because Kylo Ren is a Skywalker in bloodline.

The interesting thing is this marks the end of the original cast no more Han Solo, Luke, Leia. Only Chewy is left. The other thing is basically who/how will Kylo and Rey get trained? We know for certain that Kylo was not fully trained and Rey has basically only audited one course at the community college. For that reason I bet Luke will be featured extensively in IX as a force ghost.

I mean there is no doubt Luke will be in Episode IX.
I just have no clue what the story this trilogy is trying to tell except maybe Jedism is dying and unnecessary to be one with the force.

Yeah but Ren isn’t going to win. There has to be more significance here. Luke will be in 9, for sure.

Honestly the entire saga has really pointed to severe flaws in the Jedi and the Jedi order. I mean Yoda has got to have the worst track record for success in leadership of any body ever. Luke himself was a sorry excuse for a Jedi in his emotionalism and dark side tendencies throughout the entire first trilogy and they basically doubled down on that with the still absolutely unbelievable act of him almost murdering his student and the son of his sister (but remember, this was not the first unarmed man he tried to kill). The dark side has only ever flourished as a result of the blunders, lack of foresight, and moral hypocrisy of the Jedi from day one. I think this is very intriguing angle and I hope they explore it further but like I said they only tentatively toed those waters with this movie.

...in space, no less.
Well you have to suspend all known laws of astrophysics to enjoy Star Wars in the slightest, so this one didn’t bother me.

I will admit that one plot point I didn’t get was when Snokes ship got rammed. WTH? And how did Rey get back to the Falcon? We had a short bathroom break at one point.

I think this gets at one of the main points here. Darkness can’t exist without the light. So Jedi need to go ultimately (which is why they’re probably mixing in the “force in everyone” concept.

The movie or animated series that Disney has planned between Return of the Jedi and The Force awakens where we learn about Kylo/Ben and Luke, Snoke and stuff should be more interesting than Episode IX.

The ramming of Snoke's ship was the coolest thing that happened in the movie, in my opinion, BUT... it points to the silly logic prevalent in this film. If it is possible to take out their biggest command ship with such a tactic, why in the heck do they not have hyperspace missiles? Or just unmanned chunks of metal with a hyper drive and a remote control. You could wipe out a Star Destroyer with a cheap-o drone. You could wipe out a Death Star with 5 or 6 unmanned hyperspace missiles the size of a Rebel Cruiser.

I may be in the minority but I really liked it. The only film in the series of trilogies I liked better was ESB.

I think a lot of the issues people had with the movie were of their own doing/expectations. Meaning Snoke and Rey's parents.

Not to say the film was perfect .. I would have cut the Leia force pull (easily the worst part of the film) and the Maz scene at a minimum and probably would not have missed most of the casino planet scenes either.

I also think Kylo Ren is a fantastic villain who is growing better each movie. He is a complex character and I love what they are doing with him and his interactions with Rey. Their fight scene in Snoke's chambers against the Praetorian guard is one of the best fights scenes in any of the movies.

Yep kylo is and has been great. Going to be cool to see the arc of his character. Still overall a tad disappointed for the lack of a moving movie going experience and won't see it again (unlike all the others), ,but the more days that go by the less perturbed I am preferring to see it as a means to an end type thing/linkage to IX which I think with Abrams will bring back that Star Wars magic.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I have yet to see it a second time but the folks I know that have said they enjoyed the second viewing more. Just something to think about.

What is your take on what the overarching story this trilogy is trying to tell.
I have no clue.

I'll go on record as saying Kylo Ren is my favorite character of the entire saga. And I really wish they had kept the mask and his robes from VII instead of the cape. But oh well.

Also agree on the fight scene and I have no problem with them killing Snoke like that. In fact I thought it was pretty awesome.

To your point, I saw an article with quotes from Rian Johnson saying basically he had no story or character constraints at all in the writing of this film. That is incredibly dismaying to me as it highlights that there is no overarching story to this trilogy. That is almost as unfathomable to me as a Jedi Master trying to murder his student. It also explains why this film seemed really sort of disjointed to Force Awakens. I absolutely need to see it again and see if I feel differently though. Really disappointed to hear there is essentially no overall point to any of it though.

The reason it fell flat to me was:

1. This guy is so in tune with the Force that he can connect Rey and Ren's minds like they're Harry & Voldemort, but at the same time, so out of touch with the Force that he couldn't feel the lightsaber 5 inches from his body being manipulated by the very person that he was focused on?

2. Ren and Rey literally struggled more fighting Snoke's random security guards than they did Snoke.

Yes imo because the pupil had exceeded the master. Snoke suffered from the same arrogance problem he accused the Jedi of.

Isn't what happened to Snoke almost identical to what happened to Emperor Palpatine? Snoke was concentrating on Rey and Kylo did him dirty. I don't see the problem with that. The only difference was that Kylo did it so he could be the number one in evil and he thought he had Rey converted to the dark side.

It took a while for fans to warm up to Empire Strikes Back. Lots of people unhappy at first with much of that movie, and now it is considered by many as they best.

While I didn't love the casino scenes for a number of reasons (but knew they were necessary to bond Finn & Rose), but I thought the movie was pretty good. I do want to see it again. I thought Force Awakens was great. It will be interesting to see what they do with episode 9.

Question for everyone - Did you think Finn had bought it heading his skimmer towards the electronic battering ram? I went from "no way he buys it" to "OMG he's gonna buy it" to "wow I can't believe they had me believing Finn was gonna buy it" all within the span of ten seconds. I thought that was very well done.

Just saw it for the second time. I think it's great. People that dislike it most seem to be the people that came in overburdened with expectations. (Not saying that's true of everybody who disliked it, just my impression.)

But my tastes are clearly peculiar since my favorite of the three post-prequel SW films is Rogue One.

Like Rogue One but could have done without Donnie Yen in his not quite a Jedi role.
