Last Jedi Discussion (WITH SPOILERS)

It’s perfect for relating to today’s generation of fans, who also whine and throw fits when they don’t get what they want. ;)

I think Driver is killing it.

I do agree, that when Leia got blown out, it would’ve been a great opportunity to end it there.

worst part of the movie by far was Leia flying through space.

Agreed. The other stuff was arguably necessary or not. That was dumb. I can’t figure out if Rian is paying homage to the non canon that says she’s the most powerful in the Force or what?

Isn't what happened to Snoke almost identical to what happened to Emperor Palpatine? Snoke was concentrating on Rey and Kylo did him dirty. I don't see the problem with that. The only difference was that Kylo did it so he could be the number one in evil and he thought he had Rey converted to the dark side.

It took a while for fans to warm up to Empire Strikes Back. Lots of people unhappy at first with much of that movie, and now it is considered by many as they best.

While I didn't love the casino scenes for a number of reasons (but knew they were necessary to bond Finn & Rose), but I thought the movie was pretty good. I do want to see it again. I thought Force Awakens was great. It will be interesting to see what they do with episode 9.

Question for everyone - Did you think Finn had bought it heading his skimmer towards the electronic battering ram? I went from "no way he buys it" to "OMG he's gonna buy it" to "wow I can't believe they had me believing Finn was gonna buy it" all within the span of ten seconds. I thought that was very well done.

I didn't think he was going to die, but that whole sequence was so ridiculous to me.

1. The rebels are getting absolutely massacred, so they retreat (including Rose). Finn keeps going, but I guess the First Order decided to have some mercy on him and decided not to bother shooting him like they had everybody else?

2. There's a gigantic energy ray blasting a hole through the Rebel fortress, but Finn is able to just fly directly through it without being harmed at all?

3. Rose, who had turned around and retreated, somehow turns back around again and not only catches up to Finn, but is able to get past him enough to T-Bone him?

4. We've seen countless collisions like this in the past and it always ends the same way; fiery explosion and death. Finn and Rose both somehow survive.

5. After they miraculously survive, Finn is somehow able to drag Rose's unconscious body probably like 5 miles while the First Order continues to show mercy and not bother to shoot him.

I don't know...the more thought I put into what actually happened in the movie, the more upset I make myself haha.

There were definitely some cool moments. The ending with the kid and the broom, in particular, was really awesome. I'm curious to see if they actually do anything with him, but with the way they've handled this reboot so far, it wouldn't surprise me if that kid is never heard from again. Yoda telling Luke "Rey already possesses everything that is in there" and then the reveal at the end that she literally possessed the Jedi texts was pretty cool. The visual of the hyperspace suicide was insanely cool.

At the end of the day, it's still Star Wars, so I still liked it. But it was a relatively disappointing movie to me given the faulty logic involved at so many points.

I liked Holdo. A lot

Why? Sounds like a jerk question. Not meant to be. To me she seemed to have nothing to her and was a superfluous character.

So, Luke senses the darkness in Rey, even more than he noticed in Kylo. And Kylo is known to be conflicted and has good in him. What are the odds these two do a flip flop in the end? Rey turns evil and Luke guides Ben Solo back to a Jedi and completes his training. Ben then defeats Ms. Snoke and gets hugs and high fives from his proud and happy Jedi ghost family. And the galaxy lived happily ever after.

I just don't see this as a possibility. Given the themes that they've included in the first two movies, I just don't see them making the female protagonist/heroine that they seemingly want all the young girls watching to view as a role model turn to the dark side.

Wait, I may have lost lock on that part. Didn't she die right there in the wreck of her speeder? Please tell me she bought it because that character and the performance was a complete dud. I don't remember him saving her.

Part of me wanted it ended there as well but we would missed out on her scene with Luke. There was simply no way to kill either of them off before they had their moment back together.

Nah I'm like 75% sure she's alive just like Finn was alive at the end of the first one. They were getting medical support for her at the end of the movie.

Ah crap.

Well she was tough. She didn’t bend to Poe and her plan would’ve worked. Then she paid the ultimate sacrifice. I loved the character. New directors are giving subtle/not so subtle jabs at original series and society. Women dominate this universe now and frankly do a better job...

There was a good article out there on the f-yous to the original franchise.

Honest question...what's the rationale for why the First Order's ships, which were intently watching and tracking the Rebel's Fleet (which had dropped from 3 to 1 ships) could not "see" the 50 or so smaller ships that slipped away, but then when alerted by the code-breaker, they were able to pick them up and blast them with 100% accuracy just seconds later?

Don't get it.

As I recall they explained it as they originally thought it was just a decoy technique and to keep their attention on the large ships. Then the code breaker actually revealed that was not a decoy so they started targeting those ships.

There's also the issue that the whole "We can't shoot them, they're too close to us!" thing has never really been an issue in the franchise before and the technology is supposed to be more advanced now lol. That whole stalemate was pretty silly, and it's basically what the entirety of the plot hinged on.

Agreed. I said earlier that while the (majority) of the character sub-plots were Ok to good, the overall plot was pretty horrific I think. From the stalemate (good description) to the casino/code-breaker part it was pretty bad

I'm warming up to the Luke-at-the-end thing. I guess he exerted so much energy faking himself that he died from it?

I'm hoping that Luke had come to terms with what had happened with Ben Solo (up to that point) and that he "died" in the same way that Obi-Wan "died" - meaning that Luke will play a critical roll guiding Kylo (and/or Rey) in IX.

Lending my overall thoughts to the discussion about the various plots of Last Jedi - I am really struggling to figure out what the major plot of the new trilogy is from this point forward. If Rey's parents really are "nobodies", is the main plot tied completely into Kylo Ren's destiny? By carpet-bombing so much of the underlying plot theories from Force Awakens that tied in much of the Skywalker story line, I feel a bit uninspired by the plot options going forward.

Regarding the casino, I didn't hate it the way some did; certainly not as much as I disliked other aspects of the movie haha. Obviously we found out that it was pretty pointless from a plot perspective, but I did appreciate them teaching us more about where the First Order's money comes from/actual examples of bad stuff that they do rather than being like "Trust us, these guys are baddddd news!"

And yeah, I guess it's just a combination of age for Luke at this point and exerting so much energy to project himself that far and for so long. It was cool to see him fade away ala Yoda too.

You seem to see the same crap I do.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but the ridiculousness of some stuff just wouldn't leave my mind. In addition to the all the things things already mentioned by you and others:

- When the rebels are holed up on the salt planet, the big door is the only way in or out (at least during the sequence). Yet suddenly there are dozens of guys outside in the trench in front with guns defending.

- Aren't Finn and Rose glorified mechanics? Why are they chosen to fly off at the battering ram instead of actual soldiers? Similarly, how does Finn stand a chance against Captain Phasma when they fight?

- Whole sides of ships are being torn off and the hangar is open to outer space, yet people are running around in it in one of the battle sequences.

To the Finn v Phasma point: as I understand it, the Force Awakens (official) novel highlighted that not only was a he a storm trooper but that he was like the best of the best in all training and skills stuff. The odd part from the last movie was that he then reported his main job was "sanitation." In the book he was described as being pretty much a bad a$$ as far as storm troopers go.

Why wasn’t anyone frozen in carbonite!?!?

All kidding aside, Last Jedi lacked heart and soul for me. It was an ok film but it was toward the Episodes I-III end of the spectrum for me.

Too many thin subplots with one dimensional characters made it about 30 minutes too long.

Episode IX will have to be the best of the franchise to redeem the strange plot choices and lack of character depth in Last Jedi.
