Let's boycott college sports

Counterpoint: They're not students. They're professional athletes who have to attend classes to stay eligible to play.
Counter-counterpoint: adults with a degree have a far greater chance of earning a good living than those who do not. We all know plenty of non-athletes who did just enough to obtain a degree and are now living successful lives as a result.

assume with this post that Pena was a final straw moment for you. Me too. I'm done. Let this be the official proclamation. At least in so far as the ridiculous devotion, $ spent, tailgate passion we've had for so many years.

Was on the fence renewing for multiple reasons, but losing our best with regularity and hindering if not out outright preventing competitive success(es) means it's time to go to more hamilton/colgate/ithaca/cortland games.
They are all probably affected too. My son played D3 baseball and his coach complains about players being poached all the time. Colgate’s top basketball player and Patriot player of the year transferred after his sophomore year to Gonzaga and redshirted this past year. He’s expected to be their starting point guard upcoming season. Didn’t Cortland’s D3 National Championship football coach, Curt Fitzpatrick, leave to coach at D1 Colgate? It’s not just at SU nor just D1.

College sports fans are so funny.

It wasn’t the decades of sheer greed that broke the camel’s back.

Not the endless conference realignments that killed rivalries that were decades old.

Not the kowtowing to TV networks that made start times as fan unfriendly as possible.

Not the ADs and Coaches who left programs for more money without so much as saying goodbye to their players.

Not the Athletic Departments who demanded more and more money from its fans to fund a ridiculous facilities arms race.

Not the conference commissioners who have been on an unceasing quest to squash competition, limit the pool of competitive programs and run their sports as a cartel.

No, not any of the things that the people who are in charge of college athletics have done for years and years to actively harm the fan experience in all facets.

What broke the back is a wide receiver leaving for more money.

That is why college sports is a disaster. People have cheered every awful thing that’s happened over decades as “necessary”. And now the sports they love completely suck.

Way to go.
Except some of us have been pointing out the slippery slope for literally decades. And frankly, we were scoffed at.

Not going to boycott but does effect how emotionally invested I am.
That's precisely where most of us are realistically. The thing that sucks is that it just wears away at you little by little. For me, it started with me not watching a game all the way through (I ALWAYS used to do that even if we were getting beat by 50). Then, the losses don't sting as much as they used to (but the wins also don't matter as much). I also don't find much interest in following recruitment. It all blows but I still love the game and love me some cuse.

Contrapuntal: First of all, if they’ve enrolled in college, accepted grant in aid money and are not actually students, they're participating in a fraud and should leave immediately. And second, you conveniently left out the ending to your last sentence: “. . . stay eligible to play an amateur intercollegiate sport.” If you really think S-A’S are “employees“ you might want to read Alston.

Sure. And if these guys want to take advantage of the opportunity to go to class, do well, and get a degree, then that’s great.

But that’s really not why the vast majority of football and hoops players are in school. They’re there for sports.

Amateur? They may not be employees but they’re also not amateurs.

I don’t even understand your point. Players shouldn’t chase money because they’re enrolled in college, but coaches can? Cuz they have degrees?

It’s not like the players can’t end up with a degree. 4-5 years and 120-ish credits later they’ll have one, even if they got it by attending 3 different schools. Hell, non-athletes do that all the time.

Read Post #45. They can receive NIL, not compensation for playing. And since they’re not employees, they can’t accept scholarships to play intercollegiate sports if they’re not actually students. However, these issues are beside the point bc there’s no reason to believe Trebor wasn’t eligible. It’s the greed, entitlement and betrayal that trouble me.

I mean I get the notion that they’re “students”. But the reality is that most of them aren’t at school for school. They’re there to play sports.

That may be their motivation, but it doesn’t change their status as student athletes. Look, you are a good poster, and we just disagree on this subject. No disrespect intended. I just hate what has happened to college sports.

I don’t know what we’re disagreeing about!

What the hell is a man baby?
Someone who goes on a college sports message board to call for a boycott of college sports.

Do you just make dumb stuff up?
Have you noticed yet that you basically do exactly what you accuse other posters of doing? The technical term is projection.

I feel like we've been through this before.

This probably applies to 80% of the threads here.

Great to hear from you again. Hope everything is well.

Coaches have contracts and buyouts. If Pena's new team bought him out, then it wouldn't be as big a deal. There is no structure to the current NCAA system. Hopefully they come up with one soon.
Unlimited free agency and no team compensation

Plus no draft so the "Yankees" can continue to raid teams who can never get better by drafting well.

Gotta love CFB

The only difference is the players getting the money. Coaches do it all the time. As do the schools. We aren't in the Big East anymore for what reason.
Head Coaches have buyouts so the team he leaves gets something.
Players have unlimited free agency and the team gets a hole to fill
