Luke Carney

First, I've agreed with your takes on this QB situation I think for the full boat of it.

Second, this is exactly right -- by hook or by crook, it doesn't matter at this point. Filardi was arguably the worst QB in my lifetime to ever start a game.

He is a walk on that put up numbers in New York State. And while that is admirable and nothing to wave away in terms of athletic achievements, that and $5 will get you a happy hour beer at the local bar.

Filardi, in no way, shape or form was ready or capable to play in that game. His actions during the game signaled someone that cannot play at this level. Or at least not at this moment and the next moment is not near at all.

Maybe Carney is failing like 7 classes. Maybe Carney is out getting in trouble. Maybe Carney let Fran's puppy run away while dog-sitting. All of these are possibilities, albeit probably remote.

How Carney didn't get the start is baffling. I get that next year the goal is to have Angeli back and healthy as he seemed to be putting it together. But we have games to play this year. And when you start a guy like Filardi (after what we've seen/experienced with Rickie), the likelihood of getting the other units on both sides of the ball to play 100% is nil. Players know when you are toast.

QB is everything in football now. Everything. And if Carney is a malcontent and Fran can't play him because of team rules, I get it. But outside of that, to use him how he's been used is coaching malpractice and shows a real weakness on the staff at arguably the most important position in all of sports.
I have to agree it seems very discombobulated, I definitely trust for these kids and I think that is valid. I cannot speculate and I certainly hope not however I did hear and discuss a mention of a glitch in someone's throwing motion, certain things can worsen for multiple reasons But most of the time can certainly be fixed with work and validation and slowly but surely correct. However that is never done in situations such as this. That is offseason work. In any event I wish we never played Carney in the last game and if certain specific reasons are valid then the coaches and certainly players do not need to give an explanation to anyone especially if certain things are occurring as I suspect but I do not know for sure. Everything has to be so public in today's day and age, previously was not and it was much better. I do not think Carney is a malcontent, Given situation in relation to his red shirt, That is just plain wisdom. If he was ready I suspect he would be playing. If he was not ready he should have dropped off the depth chart fully and that is definitely on the staff. I trust for calmer heads to prevail, Seclude, don't swim in the shark infested waters and prepare for the future with goodness and integrity while owning any mistakes and sheltering the troops for the future.

Based on what Coach Fran said in the presser today, the coaching staff changes, and the fact that he announced Carney will redshirt this year, it seems to me that we are going back to Ricky Collins. I can't believe we would start Filardi again!

Maybe trot out Belin and just let him have a go. Only game we possibly even have a remote chance of winning would be Boston college.
Well, if he cannot make the plays that McCord/Angeli make and that Collins/Filardi have to tried to make... then not much point. We only have so many offensive plays... except that Carney does not know the playbook yet... but Filardi learned it running the scout team.

That's on Nixon, calling in complex plays for QBs that can't perform them. They should be running vanilla offense that they can do something with. Dumb it down. It's football. Not genetic bioengineering

I think that is the best decision for all, Alternatives were tried and considered without success. I am happy for Luke and I think it should be this way. Whether that occurs, I cannot say for sure, very tough situation

The scout team runs the opponents offense, not ours.

The only possible reason behind all of this that makes sense to me is that Carney has told Fran that he is hitting the transfer portal at his first opportunity. And who could blame him?
Fran said in the press conference if a player tells him he is entering the transfer portal then they will not play another snap for SU. It will be interesting to see if Carney plays again because he can play one more game and still redshirt.

And I believe him on that. But it's not black and white. What about a player that hasn't said they'll transfer but you're pretty darn sure they will?

He's only been used to give starters a break. Could be a grey-area response to a grey-area situation.

FWIW, without knowing any behind the scenes, if I'm sitting behind Rickie and get played like that I'd probably decide to transfer after the 2nd or 3rd loss, and for his sake I kind of hope that he is.

I've been in situations like that before. I dropped down half a level and went from overlooked to superstar. I rather expect to see Luke killing it at a Memphis or Eastern Michigan or UNLV in a couple years.

One cautionary red flag about Texas kids and their offers are the Texas schools. There are 12 division 1 schools playing football in Texas. 7 are Power 4 schools. Carney had two offers from Texas football playing schools and neither was P4. Rice offered him and Texas San Antonio offered him. I cant find any others.

Baylor
SMU
A&M
Texas
TCU
Texas Tech
Houston

Carney (and his family) should be kindly asked to leave at the end of this season.

Redshirting when the team clearly has no other QB because you want to maintain one more year of eligibility is as selfish as it gets.

I'm guessing they won't wait to be asked.

Would be pretty funny if Jakhari ends up being the only QB who stays (not counting Angeli or the lax player).

People forget that learning the play book isnt only about knowing the plays.

You also have to know the reads pre/post snap based on the D.

Many of these kids in HS only see a couple coverages so they never really have to develop that part of the game.

I am sure he knows the play book to get the players in the right spots.

The whole issue with our QBs is the oline anyway at this point.

The LI kid was not very accurate, but he was attempting to make reads, move in the pocket, save plays. But he seldom had time to do so. Had he not rushed throws and completes the 4-5 ones that were open he would have a nice avg game one for someone with no experience.

There is no excuse to start Filardi.

None.

He had no business on that field. OL, coaches, whoever. He wasn’t capable nor was he prepared.
