First, I've agreed with your takes on this QB situation I think for the full boat of it.
Second, this is exactly right -- by hook or by crook, it doesn't matter at this point. Filardi was arguably the worst QB in my lifetime to ever start a game.
He is a walk on that put up numbers in New York State. And while that is admirable and nothing to wave away in terms of athletic achievements, that and $5 will get you a happy hour beer at the local bar.
Filardi, in no way, shape or form was ready or capable to play in that game. His actions during the game signaled someone that cannot play at this level. Or at least not at this moment and the next moment is not near at all.
Maybe Carney is failing like 7 classes. Maybe Carney is out getting in trouble. Maybe Carney let Fran's puppy run away while dog-sitting. All of these are possibilities, albeit probably remote.
How Carney didn't get the start is baffling. I get that next year the goal is to have Angeli back and healthy as he seemed to be putting it together. But we have games to play this year. And when you start a guy like Filardi (after what we've seen/experienced with Rickie), the likelihood of getting the other units on both sides of the ball to play 100% is nil. Players know when you are toast.
QB is everything in football now. Everything. And if Carney is a malcontent and Fran can't play him because of team rules, I get it. But outside of that, to use him how he's been used is coaching malpractice and shows a real weakness on the staff at arguably the most important position in all of sports.
