Lydon to hire agent and enter NBA draft

We all want him to be great. I hope he blows up at the combine but I don't see it. I wouldn't call him a great leaper, not really a workout warrior and not known for being a good ball handler. However he has good size, has great range and a good rebounder. It will be very interesting how he does
I have no doubt Lydon will be a better pro than he was a college player. Doesn't mean he'll be a Hall of Famer, but I think he'll be a solid player for a number of years.

Looking forward to following his career.

He was a good starter in college. I doubt he turns into that in the NBA. But I think with a little body development, he'll have a nice NBA career as a role player.

It's more to do with the guy that is currently the head coach...

Then he shouldn't have come here if he doesn't like Boeheim and was going to stay if Hop stayed. He has people (father and Albany City Rocks) in his corner that are clueless.

I don't think the Rocks are clueless. They have sent many here for basketball including the director's son. It's puzzling if that's the real reason as some have alluded to.

Really? You think Jim Hart is clueless? JB must respect him as he sent his kids to play AAU for him and we have signed/recruited a bunch of his players...

two sides to getting drafted, do you have nba skill, do you have nba body.. some guys they think they can take the body and develop the skills, some they think can have the skills and they can build the body.

So I'm supposed to bend over backwards because his walk on son and a few other guys have gone here? AAU coaches have influenced major decisions such as this time and time again. PSA may have influenced Quade's decision to go to UK. It happens. AAU coaches have more influence over these kids than they ever have had before. Maybe if you were plugged into the scene, you'd have an understanding of how these things work. At the end of the day, he benefits from the jump as well.

And SU, JAB, and college athletics (in general) don't benefit if a player stays? Roy Williams just pocketed a $250k because he had a couple of 'tweeners stay.

How does that relate to what I just said? We know coaches benefit from winning and have an incentive to want guys to stay longer. I'll take JBs word over someone on here 10 times out of 10. He's only been the HC for four decades and worked with the elite of the elite in USA Basketball. He knows what a pro looks like.

Seems like you have an axe to grind here, have at it.

This is turning into a crazy thread. Anyone with a puncher's chance at the NBA is going to leave early, except in only a few cases. The landscape of college basketball has changed completely. Not every kid leaving early is going to be a first round pick and they are still leaving early. Look at Allonso Triar and Zona. I don't care what anyone says, this ain't JAB's fault. Syracuse is no different than at least a dozen other schools. And we are unfortunately caught between a rock and a hard place with the sanctions. We wish Lydon a lot of luck but unfortunately for him, no matter what Hop did or didn't do had any impact on TL's pro career. He's making a big decision and he is jumping into a very loaded draft.

Utah Jazz have the 26th and 30th picks in the 1st round, and Tyler is white. Hmmmm...

If I win the powerball/mega millions in the next 6 months I'll give Tyler $1,000,000 to suplex Hayward through a table

I think that failure needs to be shared with the high school education system just as much.
Oh I don't absolve them at all. Jamie Dimon stated similar thoughts recently stating we have created an entire generation of citizens that will never have a chance. It's pretty disheartening. A strong education system should be 1(a) or (b) on the list of important stuff we need to fix. Problem is that it's probably more like l or m on most lists...

As an outside observer, I think colleges have done a great job with online options for non traditional students. More people than ever can potentially be exposed to a greatet selection of courses right at their fingertips. It's never too late to learn for some people.

Does anyone think Lydon is actually getting good advice? NBA scouts are at most Syracuse games. I'm sure his inner circle engages scouts for his advice. Brent Axe mentioned yesterday that the scout he engages for Syracuse related draft information has told him he believes Lydon is a back half first round pick and thinks once he goes to the combine he will impress teams with his underrated athleticism. The guy also poked at Ford's mock draft, but take it FWIW.

I don't disagree completely, but the key to all of this education is job placement. If you educate and the your alums don't get jobs, you did a bad job.

To paraphrase Judge Smails, "Danny, the world needs ditch diggers, too". And likewise, the D league needs former 1st and 2nd round picks to fill their rosters.

We'll see. I've always thought combines were useless. You have two seasons worth of game tape. That should be enough to evaluate talent. When you have a number of talent evaluators, including Paul Biancardi and Dick Vitale among others, say he needs one more year, you have to consider what they are saying. People that I've talked to that have no ties/interest in SU basketball were legitimately shocked when he declared. On paper, this is a very deep draft. His production at the end of the year didn't do him any favors, but let other people on here tell it that I have an axe to grind.

What's going to be more shocking: Where Dion Waiters was picked or where TL is going to be picked.

I don't get why people are shocked. You should have expected it. The only people who were shocked are the people who think it's still the 1990's and you need to average 20 a game in college to get drafted.

If combines were worthless how do you explain Dion/Malachi? I trust NBA experts more than I trust Biancardi and Vitale who are strictly college analysts, but that's my opinion.

Dion Waiters didn't need a combine to jump into the lottery. He was one of the best players in America period his sophomore season. Him being picked at 4 was a shock, but if he was anywhere else in the lottery, I wouldn't have been surprised.

NBA scouts get it wrong often; look at Tyrus Thomas. He was the same player at LSU and the NBA as he was in high school. At ABCD, my father who coached AAU at the time was sitting with some coaches and made the observation of him not being able to do anything besides dunking and everyone in the immediate area cosigned. Just because they work for a front office doesn't mean they get it right. They just interviewed for the role and got the gig.

Vitale was a regular at the Nike Elite camps in the 80s and 90s. Biancardi leads ESPN's high school scouting services. To discredit their words because they aren't in the NBA is foolish.
