Make the change now

6. I have to imagine that Melo will be intensly involved in the search for our new coach, and be a big help in pulling in someone good.
Mike Woodson you are hired. Would it be bad though? Feature Kiyan. I know he didn’t have great success at Indiana, but maybe with Alex Kline as GM and a good roster around Kiyan that would generate excitement in the fan base and help rebuild the brand. We would literally be like an off brand New York Knicks kind of vibe.

Mike Woodson is terrible!!! More mediocrity and 68 friggin years old.

1..Building a team from scratch is not as big of a deal anymore with the NIL/portal world. Tons of players out there each season, and many teams lose a lot of players. Our analytics team is really good at this.
2. A new coach will have relationships already with players and might bring a core group with them.
3. Stop with the "they are paid employees" They are still the same 18, 19, 20 year olds they were when they were not getting paid. It is not like we are the only ones paying our players. They all are getting paid, but their skill levels don't necessarily change just because they get a pay check. I get that you want their motivation to change though.
4. The window to hire a new coach will be very slim, so we DO need someone immediately. I am sure that the powers that be know this, and are working that roledex. If due dilligence is done in advance, Wildhack should have a short list, and about 5 days to talk to the candidates and make a decision. Plenty of time for the portal.
5. The new coach and Wildhack need to talk to the players we want most along with their families to try to keep them if they fit the new system.
6. I have to imagine that Melo will be intensly involved in the search for our new coach, and be a big help in pulling in someone good.
7. Let's not forget that this is not fun for Red. He might take the high road, and step down early for "personal reasons" Also because he is one of us...Orange.
Good post but #7 is never going to happen and nor should it. The employer needs to make this move, not the employee.

No to Mike Woodson...
And maybe I might be in the minority, I don't want Melo anywhere near the coaching search. Sure, keep him involved with information, but I don't want him making any decisions. I want to do what is best for Syracuse long term, not what is best for the Anthony's in the short term.

I don't say that he would do it for a bias for his son, but for the program he is an integral part of the history. He knows people and can make introductions. I guess I didn't mean he would be part of a decision, but of a vehicle to talk to potential coaches he might know.

Don’t see a big difference on the timing. It’s more about doing the search the right way.

I’m totally fine with Melo being super involved in the process. He’s our most well known and successful player by a long shot. All else being equal he’s a positive for recruiting, brand awareness, etc. Maybe he doesn’t have a huge pull, but we need all the help we can get.

Incidentally he seems way more comfortable with his son coming off the bench than JB was with his kids. It’s a terrible look if Kiyan transfers, Cuse can’t blow that. If Kiyan staying means Melo involved in these decisions, that’s fine in my book

I’m very concerned if melo is involved.

I want a program program builder. If kiyan leaves so be it. This isn’t Kevin Durant leaving.

We are so egg shells around our former legends. I assume they want success. Sometimes it’s best they let the adults handle this now. I didn’t want Rob Konrad or McNabb handling the football decision either

That’s a totally fair point

One big reason I wrote that is Melo has always been extremely generous and low drama. He donates money, attends the games, and doesn’t badmouth anyone.

If he behaved differently, that’s another story

I’m not saying he should choose the next coach. Rather the school should make sure he is ok with the plan and remains an ally. I think his presence in current form is a big asset and that is where we may differ a bit in our opinions

All fair points. I just think getting a blessing from various kings and court jesters sets us up for further failure

An impartial review of this program from an outsider is needed now. Said differently we need a boeheim era enema .

I get how people feel about the legends. It’s the emotional response. I want a less emotional response now to the problems

No to Woodson

If Melo and Woodson are so tight why didn’t we hire him as the AHC? Then we coulda fired Red and had Woodson interim after BC.

Featuring Kiyan from what we've seen so far keeps us right where we are. I'm in the minority but having Melo steer this bus is no better than when we let JB do it for his family reunion. Wildhack needs to earn his status here.

I agree that ultimately the Chancellor and AD need to be the decision makers on a hire as big as this. That being said, I think it's fine to have Carmelo be part of the inner circle providing guidance and an opinion. Every executive hire goes through the car wash of major stakeholders -- and Melo is a major stakeholder given the money he's contributing.

Everyone is scarred from the Boeheim-to-Autry transition. It's understandable

Agree 144%. *

Would love for Kiyan to stay and be a part of the next phase for the program, but if he leaves due to Red being dismissed, so be it.

Time to dispense with nonsense, and do the search properly.

At what point will JW sit down with Red to have that talk about going in a different direction and ask Red to just finish out the season?

It can't be after the last game that would be too late. You need time to do the search and select the new coach so that he could get his staff together and hit the ground running before the portal opens. Sure there will be some coaches deep in a tournament run and don't want distractions but you weight the risks/rewards if it comes to that.

I don't know if JW is going to whisper the availability of the position without first telling Red that he is done.

After the 5 game losing streak.

Though that is entirely possible

Good news fellas! I just heard we’re pulling a new coach out of the G League with eligibility.

All our problems will be solved!

I’ve actually been more invested lately in the NBA than this Syracuse team. At least with a bad NBA team, you can watch younger guys, there’s the ability for trades, and you know who will be on your roster next season for the most part.

With this season down the drain, Autry is going to lose his job, there is no guarantee to anybody being on this roster next season with the portal, and we all just have to sit here and take it. We’ve been taking it for far too long. The only thing that could really draw me back in is firing Red and letting Englestadt take over (at least he has head coaching experience), and then find a proven coach next season.

It’s sad it’s come to this point as a Syracuse fan. At least making the tournament or competing in the ACC, we could believe that we’re one player away or another year away from being great again. It feels like the days of 35k fans are long gone.

This offseason will be VERY telling if the school wants to be serious about being a legit basketball program. And I’m sure the fans will notice.

Edit: The other sad part is that Syracuse SHOULD be the best job available in basketball this offseason. But to the coaches and players, we’re just a below the middle-of-the-pack conference team

Could be late Feb, could be after the last regular season game. Might depend on record, and how ugly things get.

It would be malpractice if JW wasn’t shouting the availability of the position to the people who matter (agents) to start putting together a short list. I would hope he’s also signed on with a talent searching firm specializing in coaching to lead the search, but based on the football search it seems like he does his own thing. This isn’t ymca… this is big business where we are talking tens of millions of dollars.

Regarding the “mid-season firings looking bad to coaching prospects” comments. Red had >2.5 seasons and has pretty clearly failed expectations. If a mid-season firing intimidates anyone out of this job, they simply do not have the confidence we need anyway.

Kills me to say this, but the only reason I can think of not to fire mid season is decorum. Hard to value that as a fan.
