Maraad Watson transferring to Texas

Congrats to him.

Also shows the staff has an eye for talent.
Yeah, being a minor league program to help the factory schools find talent sure feels great. Keep em coming so we can send them off to Pedo State, Miami and Ohio State after a year or two. Maybe if we’re lucky, Rutgers and WVU will want some of our best players soon too?

Do you feel the same way when we take guys from smaller schools?

This is what the system is.

Syracuse's issue is that there is a very successful basketball program (recent performance notwithstanding) which generates significant revenues and draws more fans than football. Comparing 2023/2024 basketball attendance (324.6k) with 2024 football attendance (274k) and you can see more fans attend Syracuse basketball games than football games. So, to offset Syracuse's rev share issues for football, NIL money needs to be raised. That is why Coach Brown wants to raise $6 to $8 million in NIL money on top of revenue sharing for football.

This is a bit of a misguided figure.

Basketball has 20+ home games and football has 6 maybe 7 if we are lucky.

Not really comparing apples to apples there by comparing total number of fans

You’re not wrong. But to have the opinion that all is good when 2 of your top 5-10 players leave in the same week should not be the mindset if you are serious about building a winning program. Unless you are content with the ceiling of your program being 5-6 wins and a Pinstripe Bowl bid. Which is about the ceiling of the programs that we take those other players from of which you are referring to. So maybe I just need to recalibrate my expectations around here and feel good about Pedo State wanting a player from our nice little program.

Wow

This is why a school like Syracuse needs to have multi-year contracts for their players with large enough buyouts so when the big boys take our players we can harvest money to support our NIL collectives.

We also need to have a 5% surcharge on all merchandise, tickets and concession sold at all of our sporting events.

I’d also require all businesses that do any contract work with the university to pay a 5% NIL surcharge.

John Wildhack said on the radio about a month ago that nearly all the revenue share money is going to football/MBB/WBB.

They’re not paying the smaller sports.
men’s lacrosse is getting no NIL money? I find that hard to believe

I can’t believe you because you’re wrong. This narrative needs to take a life of its own here because it’s factual. Let’s sit back and see the movements next week. There will be some really good news, and news some won’t like. It’s modern day college athletics.
And to answer the response above from CNYGuy- proposed is the key word. It’s not in affect yet.
I trust in Fran and from what I see the football NIL group

Respectfully, going to suggest as others have you re-check your information, because it’s not correct. And yes, you say proposed - that’s what everyone is operating under. A federal judge is expected to pass this and already gave preliminary approval.

let’s simplify this (and you can read this anywhere. I recommend Ross Dellenger as he’s been on top of this for the last two years): school gets $20.5 Million to distribute directly. Not a cent more. As others have stated (correctly) Syracuse is giving the vast majority of that to its FB/MBB teams. Any cent (scholarship above the previous limit of 85 or straight cash) that a school (any school in any conference, not just SU) gives to a player counts against that 20.5.

Football gets X dollars. Fran/staff decides how to distribute that X amongst its roster (be it scholarships or otherwise). Syracuse is giving the maximum. Maximum means they literally cannot give more to their teams. You can argue that maybe their breakdown is wrong and football fans will say they gave MBB too much, or WBB should get nothing…MBB fans might say the same about football. Wbb fans will probably say they should get more than the scraps. Fine. But saying the University isn’t covering something is false.

Now, if you want to say we need more NIL, I FULLY agree with you. That’s where the NIL geoup comes in. They’ve done great in a short time, but they need more support… that’s where the general public and local companies come in. SU can’t give anymore (by law, which has already been preliminarily approved by a judge and will likely get final approval before next football season).

There really isn’t a narrative people are spinning if you read the settlement and take SU at their word that they’re giving the max.

Watson was better than all as a true Freshman. The kid was only going to keep improving. This is a monster loss whatever way you slice it. These guys are an entire step or 2 down.
No one argued otherwise. Just saying the cupboards not bare.

NIL (money from outside groups/companies) is different than revenue share (money schools can directly pay athletes starting next season).

Kids can get their own NIL deals or work with outside groups.

Joey Spallina has a commercial this year with Nye Automotive. Same as last year.

It’s not about it being “all good”. It just is what it is. We’re not in the big 10 or SEC. Enjoy the good seasons, enjoy the good wins. We’re not gonna win a title anytime soon. We’re basically like being a mid major basketball school pre NIL. Hope to made a nice run once in awhile

Contracts with WHO? What agent would allow this? Why would a player do this? Would a court allow it?

You guys have to think before saying “they should change it to this because I want Syracuse to be good”

NIL $14- $4- $2- $.5
Assuming that’s what you’ve heard School $$$ breakdown is? Haven’t heard specifics beyond generally where the allocations are, but that makes sense.

Separately, We need to call it something different than NIL in here, that’s what’s confusing the hell out of the people in these threads haha.

The problem is not revenue share. It’s NIL we don’t have even close to enough from fans or from company’s. If I had to guess we ranked problem bottom 15 in P4 without revenue share.

You’d be incorrect, respectfully. But you’re right in that we lack the corporate nil backing that other programs have. Thus Wildhacks recent attempt at public outreach for it. That keeps us far away from other big programs.

What part would you say I’m incorrect about being bottom 15 in NIL, pre revenue sharing?

Well said. Every guy that leaves or every guy that visits but goes somewhere else always gets blown way out of proportion because people are still looking at this sport like what it used to be.

It’s not and will never be the same again

That’s the other thing..maybe there’s a Maraad in this class
Yup. Also for every maraad there are kids like Fadil last year that stay despite more money thrown at them. We’re not going to win every battle when it has to do with money. Just bummed as I thought our DL depth would be a strength this year. And thought we’d have a better shot at keeping him as a jersey kid. But when the top programs come calling it’s hard. Shows staff knows how to identify talent.

Yes, fortunately/unfortunately at this point we’re more towards middle of the pack but to my knowledge we’re not bottom 15. There was considerable additional support provided last, and this year. We need corporate sponsors. This id be shocked if we werent bottom 5 with.

Oh my bad on wording that’s what I meant pre revenue sharing our corporate nil was bottom 15. I don’t know what it is now but I’m sure still bottom 20 or around there.
