Also, they didn't get their money's worth. I wonder if this development has any relation to the college basketball recruiting scandal and the 2018 trials. Maybe the NCAA is finally getting around to looking into Maryland recruiting.

I remember that Maryland was mentioned during the recruit bribery trials in 2018. The testimony indicated that a guardian for Silvio De Sousa was paid tens of thousands of dollars by a University of Maryland booster to induce him to sign with Maryland. When De Sousa chose Adidas school Kansas over Under Armour school Maryland, the booster reportedly wanted the money back. Adidas "consultant" TJ Gassnola testified that he funneled money to the guardian so that he could pay the Maryland booster back and clear the way for De Sousa to sign with Kansas, according to a Baltimore Sun article.

Gassnola was convicted of bribery, but got off with only probation and home detention because he had turned "state's evidence," helping prosecutors to secure convictions against other shoe company "consultants," according to this SI article.

They underachieved while in the ACC too. I went to the game down there in their last year in the ACC. They had a talented, relatively young team but if I recall most of them transferred out right after that year. I didn’t know if the issue was Turgeon (not a great coach) or if the huge turnover was the result of leaving the ACC.

I think that was the same game in 2014 at Maryland that I went to (great Christmas present from my son). Turgeon had 3 young players from that team all transfer after that year - Seth Allen who ended up at Virginia Tech, Nick Faust who left for Long Beach St and Charles Mitchell who transferred to Georgia Tech. I figured something wacky was going on there back then. We won by 2 but had blown a big lead. Spoke to a number of their fans and none of them that sat near me wanted to go to the Big 10.
