Maryland Postgame Analysis

Updated:

NET of the teams we've played so far (note, we are 131 in NET), wins in bold:
LeMoyne: 305
Colgate: 258
Youngstown St: 207

Texas: 39
Texas Tech: 25
Cornell: 100
Tennessee: 2
Notre Dame: 101
Albany: 208
Georgetown: 79
Maryland: 8

Upcoming games where, at one point, we thought we could turn the corner:
Bucknell: 251
Wake Forest: 108
Florida St: 71
Georgia Tech: 174
Boston College: 195
That’s a NET issue not a Syracuse issue.

Those wins were all against very strong and determined teams that we grinded down to become the ultimate victors.

NET says Q4. Eye test says 5 quality wins!

May we start with the small things? May we have a coaching staff with a jacket and a tie?
YES!!!! Atleast show an appearance that we’re trying to change the vibe to get back to the traditional basics of basketball.

We haven’t had a center look like this let alone a G/SF. I’m normally not a physicality necessarily makes the best basketball players Stan but I know that Syracuse routinely looks undersized against other schools and it made some fans think that Cooney being slightly more jacked made him a worse 3-pt shooter.

Can someone explain to me what Red was talking about in the presser re Jyare? It made zero sense

Peach baskets and underhand free throws.

And no dunking.
I said it’s really a small thing, but i would try everything just to change the atmosphere. Kids are not playing hard for coach autry. Not enough talent, but not enough discipline, too.

I wasnt sure.

My guess: We tried to start six people because no serious person would consider Carlos a starter.

When the officials called us out on it we had to pull Choppa so Carlos could get his 40?

Glad I'm not the only one who caught that. Someone *cked up. Probably wouldn't have made a difference but just another missed detail that doesn't happen at any self-respecting program.

I thought there was a legit chance we lost by more points than we scored . But then Maryland stopped trying and our boys started playing when garbage time rolled in.

Red after the game: "We got our asses kicked. We just didn't show up. Sorry for my language but we got our asses kicked."
After this happens 7 or 8 times Red will realize the team did show up. That's as good as they can play. Just totally over-matched.

eddie "oompah" lumpkin doesn't commit many fouls for a big man playing big minutes. why you ask ? cuz he out guarding the 3 point line instead of guarding the paint while other teams enjoy an all you can slam dunkfest inside. maybe it's a shorter run back up court. worst post defender since taureen thompson. DC was right.
(diff being TT didn't get the megaminutes and wasn't getting paid.)

We are road tripping north for the holidays, so I was forced to listen to my phone’s ESPN TV broadcast. Just filled up for gas in PA so quick post. I’m not sure what was worse having to listen to J-Will on the call or SU’s play. Actually I do, it was our play. So many turnovers…

This game, and the first half in particular, was the lowest of the lows and that includes the infamous DePaul game. For all the horrible games and indignities we have suffered over the past 5 to 7 years, I can’t think of any worse than this one.
The season was toast before it started when the staff missed on the talent evaluations of the guys we brought in from the portal. None of these guys can play.
For the second game in a row, our overweight, often injured center played over 30 minutes. Carlos played 40 minutes despite the fact that he can’t score or run an offense. Our best player, Donnie Freeman, Red apparently believes is not in condition to play Lampkin minutes so he played only 26. There is no excuse for these minutes distributions. None of them make sense.
The roster construction is a disgrace. We have nothing with respect to rim protection. Red is fond of saying that Carlos is the only one who can play the point and if that is the case not only did he miss on Carlos, but he should’ve had another point guard on the roster because anyone who watched JJ last year knows he is not a pure point guard.
This season is over. We just don’t have the talent or coaching to get better. So we should dedicate the rest of the season to improving the players we want to attempt to retain. Donnie and Choppa must play huge minutes.
I love Syracuse basketball and I don’t miss games. And I will continue to watch. But good Lord something has to change. For those of us who truly care about and love this program, this is just too much to bear.
For Red, but this is the kind of game that gets coaches fired.

I was at a restaurant and the game was on a tv. Every time I would casually look up to watch it, it felt like we were turning the ball over, dribbling into nowhere dangerous, and/or clanking a shot. Collectively I watched about 3 minutes of game time through my 5 second glances and I think it was a fairly accurate representation of the team's performance.

The only team our early passes would have worked against us us. Slow, lazy, perfect to get stolen. Eddie, Carlos, etc. just crazy
