Maryland sucks...

Ehhh...we as a fanbase should just man up a bit here. Pretty much the majority said we would crush Maryland and that no one there could coach and they took our team and coaches behind the wood shed. Now they look like crap and candidly makes our loss a bit more ugly. All this rationalizing why they luckily gave us a beat down seems like sour grapes. We should take the punch from Maryland, spit out the tooth and handle the rest of the season and hopefully not have another game like that again for a while. I still think we can see 7 or 8 wins if our lines start to find their mojo, a receiver steps up and we find another lb. who wants to tackle.
Oh, it's not luck, they surely beat us down. All comes down to preparation and focus.

They prepped for us, we didn't for them. They focused on the game and we focused on something else, Clemson perhaps.

Um yes they did.

Sorry. Post-midnight reading comprehension lapse. Thought you were talking 2019 Northwestern. As in last years Big Ten championship game participant lost to the Zips this year.

Anyway, I’ll carry on with my walk of shame now. ;)

My next door neighbor went to this game last night. He got in line to enter the stadium at 7:15 pm for an 8 pm kickoff, and said he didn't get to his seat until the beginning of the 2nd quarter. He said it is was the most shockingly inefficient entry into a stadium he's ever seen.

I contend system, then talent. But I don't disagree with your premise..

Talent over system.

Coach Mac once said that as a young coach he thought it was 80% coaching and 20% talent.

He said that after many years, he learned that it was 10% coaching and 90% talent.

Chip Kelly in Philly affords a pretty good example.

With Foles, McCoy and Desean Jackson he wins 10 games two years in a row.

After trading all of them he wins 4 games.

With talent, his system was effective.

Without talent he could not win.

I can’t explain Maryland. I was at the game and from the moment it began we had no chance.

Talent? Preparation? Coaching? Weather?

I don’t know.

I suspect, however, that much of it is talent - we don’t have enough good players.

No inside info from me but...My only explaination for the Maryland game is Maryland had all of our signals. It was amazing how maryland always had the proper play called for our defense that game.
We play defense?

Tell that to Boise State.

College football is different from the NFL.

I dont want to look for it, but I made a comment over the summer about how i viewed Maryland as a 50/50 game (which in hindsight was still optimistic) and someone ripped me "You need to get over the past...Dino isnt gonna have this team fold early like previous teams...Syracuse fans are so negative...etc".

That being said, we need to get over Maryland.

We were a terrible team then. We are slowly improving. The goal here is to continue to improve enough that we can be competitive in the conference, make a low tier bowl, and then keep building from there.

energy feeds off energy.. bad things happen early you need to get it back or it snowballs.

Of course it was a terrible loss but I have watchedJackson since our game. He has not been close to the guy we saw. You could say PSU talent and speed was the difference, but then explain Temple. He was making perfect throws and hitting receivers in stride even on the occasions when we had decent coverage (not that often) and I think people are getting overboard on PSU who trailed Buffalo at half and should have lost to Pitt. Still a baffling 3plus hours on Sept 7th

The thing that still gets me from this game was that we weren’t prepared because we didn’t know what they were going to do because we didn’t have any tape? Mind boggling... and even if we didn’t when it started it was abundantly clear what they were going to do after the 2nd series and we still made no adjustments. These RPO offenses are all timing and we sat back and let them pick up apart . Not going to find a bigger Dino fan, but he and his staff got severely out coached that game.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I just don't think we were at all ready to play. Reading our own press. Thought we could just show up and win, then the big one next weekend.

Reality smacked us in the face, and Dino used the film as one of his goto's when we lose early.

Good news is that we don't have to worry about that anymore.

I agree with that too. I think it was a combination of all of these things and we paid for it in a big way

So our talent was 43 points worse than Maryland's whose talent is 59 points worse than Penn State?

The spread can snowball when you lose. But put it this way — PSU out-recruits MD and MD out-recruits SU. Every year.

this is what happened in the Maryland game

Thanks for the good chuckle this morning...I recall that from years back. Sometimes you just have to speak the truth and suck it up without the hocus-pocus candy coat bs, etc. Beautiful. :)

Ward was completely unprepared against Maryland. After the first series he needed to take away the short game and spy Jackson. Playing soft was death. Maryland out coached us.

It was also one of those game s- we get those two grounding calls and get them into 3rd and long they (UMD) would actually have to make real plays and decisions. They were never up against it at all.

I'm not sure - our guys on defense weren't allowed to be aggressive - like they were against Clemson.

I know the Clemson score but that game got away much later.

Maryland was preparation, coaching, talent and looking ahead to Clemson. It was a bad game plan. Classic trap Game, lack of talent, poor execution. We thought we were going to walk in there and win using base packages. We got owned.
