Maybe our offense is fine

That’s what a segment of posters here have convinced themselves of

Meanwhile Lamson was highly recruited and Shrader was a 4*
What were the other offers Lamson received?

schrader came here because he was moved to a wr and saw an opportunity to still play power 5 football here and Lamson is our 4th string qb … your point ? And honestly I do t remember lamson being a 4 start recruit at all I could be wrong tho.

I am by no means an expert, but it seems to me not folding in some play action passes with a running back as good as Sean Tucker borders on coaching malpractice.

I agree 144%!!!

Liberty was totally selling out to stop the run.
We didn’t try a single play-action pass, or screen, or anything other than trying to run into a stacked box.

I joked it was because we didn’t want FSU to have any film on it.

The explosion of offense ala B12 (that spread everywhere) has been countered a bit. Defenses know how to slow them now. People are better at stopping RPO’s.

I think what’s coming next isn’t here yet

Personally run heavy in more of a spread with tons of mis direction to me seems reasonable to come back and be effective. More cyclical than "something we have never seen".

So neither was scared off by Dino’s playing favorites? And why did Dino play Rex when TD was healthy last year.

Point is, the idea that Dino has played favorites with Tommy hasn’t impacted QB recruiting any more than a normal 4* kid on the roster does

At this point if Lamson can play put him in a game.
He can play in 4 games and still RS.

We need better QB play period.
Not asking for Heisman level play.
But just be able to functionally pass the ball and sustain a couple of drives.

Against FBS teams we are 103rd in total O. Passing O we are 122nd. We are 34th in rushing O. Scoring O we are 96th.

The O needs to be fixed, but that isn't likely to happen this year. We will need to win ugly. We will need to pound the portal for WRs this off season.

Liberty was the first game they didn’t have at least three play action passes, with a close to 100% completion rate

I mean we should be able to scheme to help our WRs if they are the problem.
Watching college football you can run rub routes, slants, man beaters.

Our WRs can’t make explosion plays but they should be able to run some routes to move the ball passing.
Our QB play is not making the right decisions in the pocket and stop getting happy feet and when they get heated in the pocket making the proper decision.

Of course if we were loaded at WR the windows would be wide open but our QB play decision making is just atrocious. Scharder had a couple of passes that me scared out of mind with the decision making.

QB play is our issue.
We have a serviceable OL and stud RB.

I'd be shocked if Lamson takes a snap this season. That's not a comment on his ability or lack thereof. There are too many options ahead of him with game experience.

We have what we have at QB. What we really need at this point is better development, game planning, and coaching. We finally have a player, and only one player, that other teams have to account for in their game plans. This staff needs to be one step ahead of that reality as the plan and scheme going forward.

How do you maximize what GS/TD bring to the table as teams focus on limiting Tucker? That is THE question in my mind. Play action would be a great start. More rolling and bootlegging GS, drag routes, WR screens, RPOs off play action and at the perimeter. I can't even pretend to know more than that.

I'd trade both our bas right now for Rattler Mertz or Mcanamara.

We’re not going to be able to get by without passing vs BC, Clemson, NCSU and Pitt.

devito will get back in

That’s like saying if you get a D on a test and 7 of the other 25 people in the class get a D on a test (and they’re supposed to be smarter than you), then a D is fine? My kid would definitely use this logic.
Well, a "D" is a passing grade, so...

My question is: Is our offense more complicated than most other teams? If so, why? Does it need to be? For the last two years, I have been confident the OL issues have been the primary problem. And I still believe that. No doubt, our deficiencies at QB are a contributing factor. Now I wonder if our WRs are just not getting the concepts. Is it a matter of not being able to understand how the routes are schemed?

It's not really complex but the scheme does use a lot of option routes where the WR has to read the coverage as the play happens and run the right route accordingly. It involves both the WR and QB to be on the same page and reading the defense correctly, which I would think can be difficult for young players to do consistency. The benefit of using this it increase the chance of a WR to be open every play since they're adjusting based on what the defense is doing.

My understanding is that the staff did incorporate more concept based passing plays during Spring Ball/Training Camp, but so far I haven't seen much of a difference.

We absolutely need to use play action more.
