McMurphy: ND to join ACC as Partial Member

Good stuff.

Adds value to the ACC on a few fronts.

ND is the only school who hasn't been a part of the realignment carousel that has any value. Glad to see them align with our conference.

**** Rutgers and UConn

Offer Louisville

I agree completely. And do it now.

Still pisses me off that ND still gets to stay on their high horse and not have to fully commit to football. What.

Anybody equating this hybrid model to the old Big East doesn't get it. Completely apples to oranges. The old Big East was basically half football schools and half bball onlies. This is just one member who gets a special deal (because they are ND).

Adding ND further hurts the Big East (probably screws up their hopes of getting an NBC deal, right?) and it creates conference stability by upping the exit fee to $50 mill (no more FSU or Clemson rumors).

The primary reason that I wanted ND a few months back was due to stability issues. The FSU and Clemson rumors shook me enough that I was willing to overlook the fact that ND was getting a special deal (again) in order to shore up the conference long term.

Only thing I care about is what impact it has on Syracuse? More $$$ I hope

This was the only logical way ND would come to the ACC.

As I've thought about it, this is actually bad news for UConn, and terrible news for Rutgers. The ACC isn't going to add a 16th team with still having 14 for football without ND as a full member. UConn will be sitting on the sideline until that happens...

And there's only one spot left *if* ND joins as a full member eventually, and it won't be going to Rutgers.

If ND doesn't have access to the ACC bowl games, then this is win.

So much for all the posts from folks who said it would NEVER happen (ND going to ACC). .

Assuming this is true.

Let's get technical about this. Notre Dame is NOT JOINING THE ACC.

Their football program (and hockey) will not be part of the ACC, so they are not a full member.

This full membership is what I said will not happen. And it hasn't.

The people that were wrong on this are those that said the ACC will never accept a partial member.

Add hockey first...play at the War Memorial
True - I'd be fine either way, but let's get greedy with our extra money and start both.

Unfortunately adding either of those sports would hurt what Syracuse has now in the Crunch and Chiefs.

The 9 month rumor finally happens.

Not sure how I feel about it. Hopefully it comes with something about ND becoming a full member at some point based upon some sort of criteria related to the landscape.

Next move will now be bringing in UConn.

Why a 15th football school? ND is only playing some games and not as a Conference member?

Given UConn's recent BB troubles and their suit vs. the ACC, why UConn?

I don't see it.

"The Atlantic Coast Conference Council of Presidents has unanimously voted to accept the University of Notre Dame as a new member. The Irish will compete as full members in all conference sponsored sports with the exception of football which will play five games annually against league programs."

The ACC doesn't sponsor either Men's or Women's Hockey, so that point is moot.

Is it safe to assume that ND will have full voting rights?

Well, I'll admit I wasn't convinced that the world was round until 1967 or so. I'm now convinced that Notre Dame is actually going to the ACC:

Looks like the ACC is now the #1 basketball conference and the #1 lacrosse conference. Firms up the stability of the football conference also. The Big 12/WVU "insiders" must be fuming.

Not a chance Louisville gets an ACC invite. They are an academic leper.

Ok, so what would be the next domino to fall that would force them into full membership in the ACC? Anyone see it?

ND winning 50-75% of their games after going 2-0 on their independent schedule over consecutive years. Mediocrity has been sinking in a little bit (though, it is taking longer than it would for most programs).

Ha! And you buy that?

A member without football is NOT a full member .. in spite of what they say in a press release.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, its a duck.

If ND's football program is not in the ACC, then they are not a "Full" member.

Quack, quack, quack.

If ND doesn't have access to the ACC bowl games, then this is win.

Read Swarbrick's quote:

"We have monitored the changing conference landscape for many months and have concluded that moving to the ACC is the best course of action for us," said Jack Swarbrick, Notre Dame Vice President and Director of Athletics. "We are able to maintain our historic independence in football, join in the ACC's non-BCS bowl package, and provide a new and extremely competitive home for our other sports."

FARK the Domers. All or nothing. Don't like that deal? Enjoy playing SMU and UCF in basketball.

Does ND have a seat at the table and a full vote? If there are 15 ACC schools voting at board meetings, does ND's vote count less?

Maybe ND has to bring the coffee and donuts?

It's funny that academics have anything to do with this. This is all about money. This is not directed at you.

Notre Dame will join ACC as full member w/exception of football. ND will play 5 football games annually vs. ACC, sources told @ESPN
Why would ND move now? I think it says a lot about what is happening with the Big East and television negotiations.

Did ESPN low ball the BE big time?

Did ND talk with business partner NBC about numbers for the Big East? Were they told a big offer was not going to be forthcoming?

The ACC takes more money off the table from the Big East. The ACC wins a key battle with the Big 12 regarding expansion. The ACC increases its buyout to the highest numbers for any conference, making it extremely stable overnight.
The next big question is if the ACC will expand again, and if so, will it be for all sports or for another Notre Dame type school with no football?

If it is going to be a team with no football, I can't see Georgetown getting in. Maryland hates them. The Hoyas have no fan base and the ACC already has the market. Makes no sense.

BTW ... my quote came directly from the ACC press release.

I know where you got the quote.

I don't know if ND has a vote on football matters or not. Do you?

ND is a partial member because their football team does not play in the ACC. Seems pretty obvious to me.
