Mike Hopkins: Next Siena HC?

Hop is a terrific coach. He has a dynamic personality, connects with players, and knows the X’s and O’s. I have no doubt that with sufficient resources, Hop will be competitive with any program in that league. I look forward to Hop’s future success and returning to the NCAA tournament!!!!! Go get ‘em, Hopper!
Mike is a great guy. Would send my son to him to coach without hesitation. Some people were destined to be head coaches of college teams. Mike is one.

Agree he will do well at Siena. I wish him much success there.

Seems like a big fall from UW and the NBA. Maybe his wife wants to come home. Hope he does well. Hope he doesn’t keep Lee as assistant
If coaching is what he loves and he is making $400k to $600k per year than I don't think he is to worried about a"fall". Some people in life don't need to be at the top of their profession to view themselves successful and everyone on this board would take that salary in a heartbeat.

Correct. They’re in financial trouble. I know two people who work/worked there that would know. It’s not a surprise AW was welcomed with open arms. They had to. Which is not a knock on them or AW.

Yeah, we'll see how Siena navigate this... The Chancellor did a TV interview essentially saying "financial problems overblown, all is well" but I am not sure many believed him. I have little doubt GMAC factored this in his decision to leave as well...

if hop goes to siena, could that hurt su at all, even in the slightest way?

1. what if gmac wants to bring in a siena player. hop could use the playing time angle.

2. if gmac wants to bring lee with him, could hop counter with the asst head coach title and a sig pay bump?

3. IF aw helps hop at all, does that reduce, even a little, how much he can help gmac?

Good questions- I do find it hard to think this ends up anything else but beneficial for both programs as Hop taking the job to me would symbolize him getting a very big recommendation to the Siena administration among other things. All of this just a guess.

I think the first two questions, at least, would apply to any coach. Not just Hopkins.

correct. but i was looking at it more from the standpoint that hop was an su guy and close to gmac. wasnt clear on that.

If we are worried about Hop at Siena we are screwed.

i'll assume you didnt read the post.
I just read the post more closely. I suppose there could be a slight hurt to SU if any one of your points came about. I don't think we should be mining talent from Siena after year after year. I would think a move to Syracuse would be a step up for Lee even though they worked together at Washington. I have no idea about AW and what he intends to do with his money. Maybe he is on a budget as far as his NIL donations go.

If he is the head coach at Siena, I think all bets are off. He is going to try to keep any player he wants whether Gerry wants him or not. Obviously playing time would be an angle, but any coach is going to use that argument. That would be part of his job to do that. Same for Lee. Each will do what is best for their respective program.
Yes, it could possibly hurt us, but I think you have to go in with a next man up attitude. So if we lose someone, just find another player or coach.

I don't see any scenario where the two programs don't have impact on each other. Knowing Hop for a long time, he is going to do what he thinks he needs to do to win. Gerry is going to do what he thinks he needs to do to win. They are both in the same region from a recruiting standpoint. They will respect each other, but I expect they will go head to head... and both will do their damnedest to beat the other.
