George McDonald Says High Number of Verbal Commitments Allows Staff to Get a Jump in the 2016 Class (PS; Mink)

Syracuse's high number of verbal commitments is one of the biggest story lines of the offseason for the football program. Twenty-three players have already informed the staff of their intention to sign with Syracuse in February, and if that holds true it will allow Scott Shafer and his assistants to get an early jump on recruiting targets for the 2016 class.

Of course, verbal commitments are not binding, and that is enough of a reason for the staff not to look too far ahead.

"I'm still recruiting the guys who are committed like they're not committed," offensive coordinator George McDonald said.

That will likely continue into January, when McDonald said "everything kind of settles in and really, really stabilizes itself" in terms of most prospects being certain where they will attend school.

Joe Adam Has Been Assigned to Recruit NYC and Eastern Pennsylvania

SU OL Coach Joe Adam Adjusts Style to Fit SU Football's Uptempo Pace (PS; Bailey)

For the Syracuse offensive line, the personnel situation is straightforward enough.

Left tackle Sean Hickey returns as the unquestioned leader. Junior college transfer John Miller has locked up the center spot. Guards Rob Trudo and Nick Robinson will work to hold off Omari Palmer in training camp. And returning starter Ivan Foy will duke it out with spring starter Michael Lasker at right tackle.

But what may be more important than who fills those slots in front of quarterback Terrel Hunt, is how quickly they can play in SU's fast-paced offense. And success on that level comes down in part to how first-year offensive line coach Joe Adam shifts his style.

"We're going ot practice as fast as we'll play," Adam said in an interview on Thursday. "That's something that I've had to change coming into this offense. In practice the drills have to mimic our play as much as possible, so I can't take a lot of time as far as setting up drills.

Michael Lasker (67)

RT Michael Lasker Ahead of Returning Starter Ivan Foy Heading into SU Training Camp (PS; Bailey)

In one of the few true position battles heading into Syracuse training camp, junior Michael Lasker has an early edge on returning starter Ivan Foy at right tackle, SU offensive line coach Joe Adam said on Thursday.

Lasker took all of the Orange's first-team reps at right tackle during the spring while Foy was suspended due to academic issues. Because of that, Adam, who was hired in February, hasn't gotten to coach Foy in pads yet.

"I can't say it's even footing because I've coached Mike," Adam said. "I've been through a spring with him. I've never coached Ivan. It's unfair to him and us to say that they're on the same level right now.

"I think Michael has the upper hand to start and how quickly Ivan adapts and understands my terminology and our communication process, then we'll see how he comes along."

Lasker played in nine games last season, most notably filling in for Sean Hickey sporadically at left tackle as he was hampered by a lower-body injury toward the end of the season. Foy started all 13 games at right tackle as a redshirt sophomore before the academic issues took him off course.

OG Omari Palmer (57) is Moving Up the Depth Chart

SU OL Coach Joe Adam Expects a 'Hellacious Battle' at OG During the SUS Football Training Camp (PS; Bailey)

First-year offensive line coach Joe Adam values competition. And Syracuse fans should expect to see a lot of it this training camp, especially at the guard position.

Returning starting right guard Nick Robinson is healthy again and returning left guard Rob Trudo is back after a brief switch to center during the spring.

But redshirt sophomore Omari Palmer is putting together a strong offseason and could push them this August.

"It's going to be a hellacious battle here because everybody wants to play," Adam said. "It's a good problem to have for us because I believe that competition breeds success."

The 6-foot-2, 316-pound Palmer appeared in nine games last season, including time as a member of the field-goal unit. Adam noted him as one of the most improved offensive linemen of the offseason, along with redshirt freshman tackle Jamar McGloster.

Syracuse 2014 Opponent Preview Series: Maryland Returns One of the Top WR Tandems in the B1G (PS;
Mink)

Moving right along in our series previewing the 2014 Syracuse football opponents is the final nonconference foe and one that should be quite familiar to the Orange when it visits the Carrier Dome on Sept. 20.

Syracuse bested the Maryland Terrapins last year in College Park by a 20-3 margin in a game that never felt that close because of the lackluster Maryland offense.

That week Maryland was without two of its leading wide receivers, Stefon Diggs and Deon Long, and four of Maryland's first-half drives ended in three turnovers and a missed field goal.

Not pretty.

So what's in store for Syracuse in 2014 when former assistant coach Randy Edsall returns to the Dome?

I called on Roman Stubbs, the new Terps beat guy at the Washington Post, to answer just that.

Meet the 2014 SU Football Team: Austin Wilson (sujuiceonline.com; Cheng)

While Terrel Hunt is firmly entrenched as Syracuse’s starting quarterback heading into the 2014 season, there’s plenty of debate as to his backup.

There are four candidates behind Hunt, including true freshmen Alin Edouard and AJ Long, along with redshirt freshmen Mitch Kimble and Austin Wilson.

Syracuse fans got a look at three of those candidates in the 2014 spring game, and all three played well. (Edouard will not arrive at Syracuse until August.)

But the quarterback who arguably shined the most was Wilson, who spent last season running the scout team. He completed all six of his passes for 124, while leading back-to-back scoring drives. Team Offense would go on to defeat Team Defense 34-27.

PS Preseason College Football Review/Haiku: Nos. 86-90 (Wake Forest Faces a Rebuilding Season; PS; Stevens)

86. WAKE FOREST

Dave Clawson arrives at Wake Forest with two things very much working in his favor.

One, he's won at private schools before as a head coach, notably Fordham and Richmond. Two, no one in their right mind expects him to do so this year in Winston-Salem.

Wake Forest fans have a tradition of being fairly realistic with their lot in life, and while three consecutive bowl bids from 2006-08 probably raised the expectations of many, the recent success of a North Carolina private school in the other half of the ACC (Duke) might be even more responsible.

What's a reasonable plan for building the Demon Deacons? Exceptional player development, perhaps even with a heavy dose of redshirting; shrewd nonconference scheduling that can get the program halfway to bowl eligibility by the time September ends; smart play marked by limited miscues; and getting a little fortunate that other teams in the league don't maximize their own resources.

Yes, that's what worked under Grobe nearly a decade ago, and while Clawson is certain to have his own schemes and philosophy, Wake Forest's path to victory in the macro isn't that much different than it's always been. Grobe usually had the Demon Deacons in bowl contention deep into the season, and Clawson is capable of doing the same. It's just not a good bet to bank on it during what will clearly be a transitional year, especially with a massive question at quarterback and the safety blanket of wideout Michael Campanaro lost to graduation.

Where's the rushing game?
Fully absent three years straight
Could be four quite soon
