So McDonald is in charge of the entire offense, and then individually working with each receiver?

There is a reason they have position coaches, because one guy can't do it all.

Plenty of coordinators handle a position as well.

EDIT: For example, at Michigan their OC also handles QBs and their DC also handles DLs.

Shafer was DC and secondary coach.

Hackett had the QB's

We had a bunch of quality recruiting guys on the staff, Moore was an exceptional coach, and did a lot of very good things with our WR's the past few years.

I want to hope we can bring in an elite WR coach that can also double as an elite recruiter, but those guys don't grow on trees.

Here's hoping that we can get a top notch coach in here to coach up the crazy good WR talent we just added.

McDonald I think is considered a very strong WR coach.
 
On the other side of the coin, if the new coach was a Florida guy, McD could let them handle Florida and then McD could focus on NY/NJ/wherever.

That's pretty short sighted.

McDonald isn't going to be here forever.

This year a lot of recruiting was personality based on connections and past experience. That leaves the program when that recruiter leaves. It's great for now, but at the end of the day the program needs to recruit itself, and you have to be capable of getting kids in your base area long term.
 
Very happy for Moore. It bothered me to no end that an all time great college receiver, and a pretty damn good pro, would catch because he wouldnt kiss the ring of some self-important fat ass HS coach in Jersey who thought he was God's gift because he played college ball at Montclair St.

I get what you are saying. I just can't see expending much time or resources on it. I really believe because of our alumni profile and national exposure in basketball and having a very storied football history , that we can recruit on a national level. This class reflects that. If guys from NYC want to come, fine , but everytime we draw dead on a big recruit from there it cast doubt on our legitimacy. Atlanta is my vote to go after top talent , there is a lot there and it seems like they have respect for our program and history.

You're not giving HCSS enough credit. I'm sure that he is doing everything possible to leverage McDonald's connections. If/when McDonald leaves, I'm reasonably sure that Shaf will have similar access to most of the S. Florida coaches.

Plus it's not like HCSS doesn't have So Fla connections himself. He was personally put onto Eskridge because of the relationship he had with the Central HC
 
Lou C said it perfectly. We are wasting an opportunity if we don't hire a legit recruiter here. WR and RB coaches are generally strong recruiters and Rob Moore just wasn't strong enough in that area. Good luck to Rob, but as Phat said, this will probably be for the better for all parties.

At this point, seeing that most of the coach shuffling has been done already, I would bet we do go after a HS coach with ties to whatever area we feel strongly about. Some want it to be NY/NJ. I think someone like Jeff Bertani in Miami is a more likely bet.

So we're above doing what every other BCS program does including the big boys and including our own Coach McDonald in Florida and just say to hell with those players?
 
I don't understand why it seems to be OK to point out that recruiting was not Marrone's long suit but it is unacceptable to say the same thing about Rob Moore. Both were good at other parts of the job and both probably better suited to the NFL. Life is too short - good luck to both of them and let's move on. I have every confidence that Shafer knows what he is doing and is a better recruiter than DM. No slam on Doug - just the way I think it is. Shafer will hire the right guy and everybody will be better off. Good luck to Rob and thanks for a job well done (and IMO he was right about NYC).

This would be fine with me. If we can continue to build on our Florida connections and begin to regularly sign 4-star Florida guys the top-ranked kids from NYC will begin to understand that Syracuse is a legitimate option.

So you're saying that my experience playing WR in pick up games and flag football leagues in the military aren't sufficient? I can start playing Madden Football to brush up...

I am glad that HCSS knows what he wants in his staff and that he is not lowering standards and promoting people buying their abilities AND experience.

That's to prevent the randoms from applying or a useful filter in the screening process. It doesn't mean they wouldn't ultimately offfer or hire a high school coach/former player that they already have a past connection with.

You are right that it is a filter for the screening process, having written tons of these job posts, but it could also be the minimum acceptable requirement. I would guess that it would have to be an outstanding candidate that doesn't have collegiate or NFL coaching experience as this seems to be a common denominator with all the current coaches.

Remember I'm in the business. LOL.

Sometimes I think that guys who really made it big time in the pros just don't thrive on these college staffs when it comes to recruiting. There are probably a few good ones out there that aren't coming to mind, but it seems like it just isn't a great fit. A lot of guys with a cup of coffee or too in the league, but stars? You always think that having a superstar NFL guy like that calling on a kid is going to be a huge advantage, but I think it's outweighed by the difficulty of adapting to all the BS needed for recruiting.

When Tennessee hired Chuck Smith to be their D-line coach they thought they'd struck gold, and that didn't work out either.

It's nothing negative about the guys, it's all the BS that comes with recruiting. Like said above, kissing the rings of high school coaches, kissing the asses of 16 year old kids. How the hell does a guy like Rob Moore or Chuck Smith kiss the ass of a 3-star jackass high school junior that thinks he's something special. I know if I was a former NFL all-pro it would be next to impossible for me to treat some prima donna with 1/10th the talent I had like he was incredibly special.

Recruiting is a unique ability, I just don't see many guys like that able to check their ego that way.
