Nate Oats vs. Coach Hop Thread

The only reason not to like Oats is because of how he crowed over beating SU.
Living in western NY, I found him to come off as a good, personable guy who was doing things right at UB.
That and he reminds me of Bobby Hurley.

I'm not sure why I keep responding, but you don't seem to understand the situation with any sense of neutrality.

Hopkins, if he got fired in a couple years, could walk into many mid-major head coaching jobs. He won't have to be an assistant again.

He coached the NBA guys on the Olympics team. He was a terrific recruiter, and I'm sure he could be again, if he's stalling out with UW. He was written up as one of the best assistants in America numerous times.

His resume is better than most candidates out there. He won Coach of the Year in a P-5 Conference in his first 2 years as a head coach anywhere. He has a great, upbeat personality.

I mean, you think this guy can't get another head coaching job? You're nuts. I mean, really. You are nuts.
I didn't see where he said that. I think he's saying if Hop gets canned and his next job is replacing JB that is a rarity in the profession. I'm in the minority but if Hop has two more awful seasons I don't want him.

Likewise. Love Hop but you can't turn over the keys to a top 10-15 program, in the scenario you outline, to a failed coach. Would be a massive failure on the part of the AD. Need to go the OSU, UL, UVA route and find the highly successful coach of a mid major or lower level P5 program.

The point I was disagreeing with was that he said, if Hop gets canned, he'll be looking for an assistant's job somewhere. Uh, no, not likely at all. That was my point.

Why would you want to pigeon hole someone like that? Are you not going to be a fan if you see a different defense?
I will be a fan still. But I want to see the syraxuse style of play stay the same

I guess we are different. I don't care if it's successful. I was a fan before we went exclusively zone.

Yes. The only “Syracuse” thing I’d care about continuing is getting high caliber players who play fun to watch basketball. I feel like we’re on the path to getting back to that right now, and I’d like to see it continue.

If we end up playing that clutch and grab, grind it out 60-58 style of ball...eh.

Luckily that style of ball seems to be fading a bit, and the game is becoming more entertaining again. I don’t care what schemes we use but let’s get after it and play some ball.

by the time jb retires, at least one if not both those guys will be at mid majors attempting to rebuild their reputations

Lol. I mean, you’re not wrong! It’s extremely hard to win consistently in big time college basketball. The percentages point to at least one of them flaming out at the P5 level. And at the rate JB is going, Hop could lose his job at UW, rebuild his head coaching career at a mid major, and be primed to take the SU job when JB finally decides to hang it up in another 5-7 years. That’s really not a far fetched scenario!

this is like fantasizing which celebrity is going to replace your spouse someday.

we have a guy in the chair who is still better than either of those guys will ever be
I agree with your conclusion. Your analogy? I think Katherine Winnick would be a definite upgrade. She just isn’t going for it.

Except in this case we are currently married to the beautiful celebrity and fantasizing about replacing her with the homeless lady on the corner for some strange reason.
This is like a lot of people thinking we're still married to Sherilyn Fenn from Twin Peaks 1990. But, in 2017, she doesn't quite have the same magic.

I have no idea which is the better coach, between Hop and Oats. Although i love Hopkins' personality, i'd prefer a more significant change—overall—to the program, not just JB-lite or someone who feels encumbered by a legacy of 'the way He did things.'

It's not "The Syracuse Style of Play." It only began circa 1996.
If we inextricably link zone to SU because of a relatively short-term trend, one could also say that "Syracuse is a middle of the league pack team."

Neither should be true.
