NBA Thread 2020-21 Season

Ha, the Heat were...just in the finals! They got a squad and are fun to watch. They’ve got Brooklyn to get NY on the board on Christmas. While the Knicks with KD and Kyrie would have more cache than the Nets do with those two...it is what it is. The Knicks don’t have anyone that anyone that’s not a Knicks fan cares to watch at this point. From that standpoint, it’s a shame they didn’t land Zion.

They need Barrett to develop like Brandon Ingram has. That would be a boon to them.
exactly.

nobody cares anymore. :)

to hell with the nj nets too.

they shouldve changed the nickname.

That's interesting, I didn't even consider that angle.

How many guys have qualified and not ended up getting it? Kemba was one?

Never heard of this site before so I can't say for certain that it's correct but: https://www.interbasket.net/news/27...4XGbaU-RTz4PSWwcViSJR3jqqAh-Sa641MY6ARaUAFZzA

According to them, the following players have qualified for the Supermax since its inception:
  • Steph Curry - signed it
  • James Harden - signed it
  • John Wall - signed it
  • Russell Westbrook - signed it
  • Kawhi Leonard - did not
  • Anthony Davis - did not
  • Damian Lillard - signed it
  • Kemba Walker - did not
  • Kyrie Irving - did not
  • Giannis Antetokounmpo - signed it
  • Rudy Gobert - might sign for less?
I thought Blake Griffin's deal was the supermax though?

Any interest in an "Syracusefan.com" NBA Fantasy Season?

Haven't done one for a number of years. If I can get 8 commitments will look into setting something up tomorrow and have a draft on the 19th-22nd.

If interested also fill in the following if you have a preference

Site Preference: ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, Other
Specific Draft Date Preference: (Between Dec 19 and Dec 22)
Scoring Preference -- Roto, Head to Head (Points or Roto), Points
Roster Size - (For example 10 players, 5 bench)
Max Roster Moves - ???

Any other thoughts?

I'd do it. I prefer Yahoo for fantasy. Kinda prefer head to head. I can probably make a draft work whenever. I'd go for larger roster sizes given a weird Covid season.

Today is the 3 month anniversary of this historic game.

I'd be in.

Site Preference: Yahoo! (but fine with any)
Date: Prob a weekend night (19th or 20th), but can always set my order if I have a conflict. With my kids in hybrid schooling, my weekdays can get kind of nutty. But whatever works for the larger group is cool with me.
Scoring preference: Head to head
Roster Size: Depends on how many teams end up being in. I'll defer on this.
Max Roster Moves: I'll defer.

I thought Blake Griffin's deal was the supermax though?

For whatever reason, since I was thinking of Kemba, I was only thinking of guys who actually did hit FA, so I totally blanked on Davis and Leonard. Kyrie I had no recollection of even being offered it though.

on Blake; some quick googling is inconclusive, but I am leaning towards it not being a supermax. The first year of the deal he was getting $29.7 million and the cap was just under $100 million, so that would be 30%, not the 35% super max. And looking at it, I am pretty sure he wasn't eligible; he would've needed to make all NBA in either 2017 or both 15 and 16; he was third team in 15 and that's it.

It is interesting that 5 people have signed it (not counting Giannis) and 2 of them have been traded (for each other!) and the other is trying to force his way out

Luka and Harden remind of going to play ball at the rec center and you see the chubby older guys who look like slugs warming up then don't miss and run till there is no one else left to play against.

And I fully admit I'm saying this while I at least have a year or two on Harden.

Really curious to see how this Warriors roster shapes up and how they look once we get past pre season.

On another note, is this the year the Mavs play enough defense to contend? They play such a fun brand of hoops and of course Luka is worth the price of admission but they gotta find some defense on the regular. Should be fun year seeing if Portland can bounce back and how things shape up in the West now that some parts of Golden State are back and with a new cast to go with.

Overall I'm not sure I remember there being so many good teams across the NBA that could fight for a playoff spot if they stay healthy or even be in the argument for contention.

I think it's shaping up to be a fun season in both conferences. I look at it something like this:

Contenders:
  • Lakers
  • Clippers
  • Bucks
  • Nets
  • Celtics
  • 76ers
Playoff locks:
  • Nuggets
  • Jazz
  • Mavs
  • Trail Blazers
  • Raptors
  • Heat
Fringe Playoffs:
  • Everyone else in the West
  • Pacers
  • Hawks
  • Wizards
If I had to guess, the 3 west teams I feel most confident about missing the playoffs are the Kings, Grizzlies, and Spurs, but really any of those remaining teams could get the 8 seed and I wouldn't be surprised. I think the Rockets will make the playoffs if Harden stays with them all year. If he's traded, it obviously depends on what the return is but I'd say that would likely take them out of it.

So I guess in my view, each conference has 6 teams that I think are pretty much locked in. I think the Mavs are probably closer to a fringe team than they are being a contender, but obviously that could change if Luka, Porzingis, or someone we're underestimating makes another leap in their games.

I'm way more bullish on the Mavs than most people. I think if you have a player in the very top tier (Bron, Kawhi, Giannis, Luka, KD/Steph pending injury stuff), I think you are up there. Plus they got perimeter defense help and drafted well. They already had an historically great offense from last year.

I also think the true contenders are a smaller group: Lakers, Clips, Nets, Bucks.

Next level I see are the Cs, Sixers, Mavs, Nuggets... and I really only see the Mavs being able to really compete with the top four.

I do think I'm probably higher on the Celtics and 76ers than most people are this year. I think one of them will end up being the 2 seed in the East when it's all said and done.

Re: Mavs, like I said, I think it depends on how their guys develop. Luka was an MVP caliber player last year and they were pretty clearly not a contender. I like what they're building there but I think they're probably a year off still, if not more. We'll see. I love Luka to death and would love to see Dallas break through but if I had to bet on it, I think they end up in the 5-7 range in the West again.

I'm purposefully staying away from Dallas because I think they can potentially make the leap but I'm not expecting it either. The teams I'm betting on this year:
  • Spurs under 29.5
  • Kings under 28.5
  • OKC under 23.5
  • Hawks missing the playoffs
  • T'Wolves over 28.5
  • Jazz over 41.5

Don't sleep on the Jazz-if they can stay healthy. Their 2nd five will keep them in a lot of games with Favors back and Clarkson and Ingels plus they have Conley who has learned his role, a healthy Bogdanavic and hungrier Mitchell and Gobert who have a salty taste in their mouth. I think they will compete for #2 in the West.

The 2021 NBA free agency class as a whole was being considered the best class ever and every team saved their cap space up for it. The best free agents for that class now (listed by WAR):

Kawhi Leonard (player option but he'll almost certainly stay)
Rudy Gobert
Kyle Lowry
Jrue Holiday (player option, would think the Bucks will do whatever it takes to keep him)
Chris Paul (player option that he'll almost certainly accept)
Duncan Robinson (restricted)
Danny Green
Hassan Whiteside
Montrezl Harrell (player option)
Derrick White (restricted)
Jarrett Allen (restricted)
Will Barton (player option)
Patty Mills
Dennis Schroder
Devonte Graham (restricted)
OG Anunoby (restricted)
Nemanja Bjelica
Alex Caruso
