NBA Thread 2022-23 Season

Always thought it was kind of an internet joke that Brown can't handle the ball. Like maybe not a massive strength of his but not a serious problem either. After all he scores a lot in the lane. Last night though... my goodness. He has to figure it out.

A lot of Bucks fans are desperate to get rid of Middleton because of his loose handle and also desperate to try to get Jaylen Brown. Aside from his age, Jaylen feels like exactly what we should not want right now.

If Boston is actually open to trading him, I imagine he’s at the top of the list for Portland and Houston (assuming they get Harden).

I also personally think something built around a Jaylen-Garland swap would be good for both Boston and Cleveland.

That's an interesting one. Cleveland desperately needs a wing. And it is possible the Mitchell/Garland backcourt is just too small.

If I had to guess, I would say the Cavs are more likely to break up their two bigs as opposed to their two smalls, but a Brown-Garland deal would be really spicy

No way they move Mobley.

Brown-Garland is interesting.

Would be a win now move though for sure. Mitchell's gone when that contract is up.

Spo is probably my pick for best coach in the league. He is definitely an all timer. He was on the list of top 15 coaches in league history put out last year. (Then again, so was Doc...)
Paid his dues. I'm hoping Will Hardy can follow the same track to long-term success.

Mitchell potentially leaving also could theoretically open up a Mitchell Jaylen swap instead but I think the Garland idea is a better on court fit for both teams.

IMO, Hardy has a great future in front of him. Looks like he could be a great NBA coach

If the Heat win it all, I was trying to think of other examples in NBA history of a team winning a title without say a Top 40-50 player of all-time on their roster.

2019 Raptors -- I feel like most consider Kawhi on that level, but he's probably fringe
2004 Pistons
1979 Sonics -- their best player was Jack Sikma I think
1977 Blazers -- Walton would have been if he stayed healthy
1959 Nats -- Dolph Schayes great but not on that level I don't think

Yeah I definitely meant they would be looking to move Allen. Mobley isn't going anywhere

It's weird, a few of those are there for durability reasons more than anything. Bill Walton in 1977 was obviously at the caliber of one of the 50 greatest players of all time, he just couldnt stay on the court. Ditto Kawhi.

Schayes is an interesting one, it's so hard to tell with guys from that long ago. The guy was consistently first or second team all NBA in his peak. This was the first season Butler even made second team all NBA, which seems hard to believe.

You look at the 79 Sonics; Jack Sikma never made all NBA (they only had 2 teams back then). Gus Williams made a first team in 82, a second team in 1980. Dennis Johnson made a first team in 81, second in 80, so in the years following the title. But I'm not sure you could argue they had anyone who was considered one of the ten best players in the league in 1979.

And the 04 Pistons are the poster boys for the team who wins without a superstar.

Though I think a pretty large takeaway from this is Jimmy Butler has been pretty damn underrated.

Yeah Kawhi has to be top 50.

Yeah that's bananas, crazy Butler has never made all-nba until this season.

If somehow the Heat win the championship there's a strong case to be made that it's the most impressive championship run of all time.

Schayes was 1st team all NBA six times and 2nd team six times. And made the 25th, 50th and 75 year all NBA top players teams.

Plus he help birth a great shaky spud.

I may have phrased the Butler fact in a confusing manner; he had made third team all NBA prior to this year. I meant to say this was the first year he made it as high as 2nd team.

He’s made 3rd team several times, and if you go back and look at it, I don’t think he’s really ever had much of a case to be 1st or 2nd. He’s a good player obviously but he generally doesn’t play many games (he’s eclipsed 65 games 4 times in his entire career and the last time he did it was 7 or 8 years ago) and he’s a forward in a league where Lebron, Durant, and Giannis have locked down 3 of the 4 spots on the first two teams for awhile now. He’s simply not on their level as a player.

Good notes, thanks for clarifying.

Obviously tough competition with his contemporaries at the forward spots.

Hot take: Pierce and Garnett have milked that one ring as if they had a 10 year dynasty. And I’m tired of hearing about who does/doesn’t get along with Ray Allen. Nobody cares ya old sensitive, self important weirdos.
Even Mike Eruzione is saying settle down fellas

Garnett is a Top 25 player of all time but his personality always annoyed me. He would always pick fights with players a foot shorter than him his entire career. And the Ray Allen thing is so weird. Its not like KG didn’t seek greener pastures multiple times in his career.
Mt. Rushmore fake tough guy. He played against Oakley and the Davis boys and never pulled that crap against real dudes who'd kick his ass.

I thought he may have dual eligibility, giving him the out to make it at G or .

Obviously though you are right, he's great, but the guys you mentioned have been a step above. And the games played are also going to hold him back. But man the guy is really good. And when I look at it a little deeper, in the last few years the following guys have made 2nd team all NBA at : Derozan (22), Randle (21), and Siakam (20). Without litigating each of those years, I would say Butler is better than all of those guys while also acknowledging they probably had better cases in each of those seasons. (assuming that make sense)

Can we just hand Denver the trophy? If Miami wins it will be lowest TV ratings finals in maybe forever and for good reason as Miami will get boatraced
Do you work for the NBA, Disney/ABC, or any of the advertisers? If not why do you give a flip about the ratings?
